Recently, The Wall Street Journal ran a relatively small article in its Marketplace section that many likely missed. The headline was, “Entrepreneurs Cut Own Pay To Stay Alive,” and it described the often unseen reality when it comes to business success.

Pundits and politicians frequently rail against the “wealth gap” and high CEO pay, but in doing so, they rarely acknowledge the stresses and strains faced by company heads on the way to riches. Put simply, high pay and substantial wealth in the business world is often a distant result achieved after years of personal sacrifice, earnings shortfalls, investor skepticism or outright rejection, and low pay.
