The 5 Dow Stocks That Defied the Selling Tuesday

May 3, 2016: Markets opened lower Tuesday following some overnight weakness in overseas markets resulting from weak data on trade from both China and Europe and a strengthening dollar. Energy prices were also lower, and the only sector threatening a (small) positive finish for day is healthcare. WTI crude oil for June delivery settled at $43.65 a barrel, down about 2.5% for the day. June gold slipped 0.3% on the day to settle at $1,291.80. Equities were headed for a lower close shortly before the closing bell as the DJIA traded down 0.70% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.80%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 1.06%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Tuesday was Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) which traded up 2.80% at $33.72. The stock’s 52-week range is $28.25 to $36.46. Trading volume was about 25% above the daily average of around 49 million. The drug maker reported good earnings this morning and raised its full-year guidance.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) traded up 1.79% at $95.32. The stock’s 52-week range is $92.00 to $132.97. Volume was about 30% above the daily average of around 38 million shares. The tech giant had no specific news Tuesday, but the bump ends an 8-day losing streak for the stock.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) traded up 0.31% at $132.51. The stock’s 52-week range is $95.00 to $135.11. Volume was about 10% below the daily average of around 3.4 million shares. The health insurance provider had no news Tuesday.

McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) traded up 0.28% at $128.56. The stock’s 52-week range is $87.50 to $129.80. Trading volume was about half the daily average of around 6.5 million. The fast-food behemoth had no specific news on Tuesday.

The Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) traded up 0.20% at $81.13. The stock’s 52-week range is $65.02 to $83.87. Volume was about 30% below the daily average of around 9 million shares traded. The company had no specific news Tuesday.
