Downloads for April indicate that the total market for apps grew by 1.5% in the month. Also, the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store posted a small revenue gain, compared with a small revenue loss at the Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google Play store.
In March, Google Play claimed 40% of the revenue generated by the two apps stores, but that total fell to 39% in April. The Apple App Store’s share rose by 1% in April, from 60% to 61%. The difference is small in overall revenues, but according to research firm Distimo, over the past six months Apple has increased its revenue from the App Store by 27%, compared with a revenue increase of 38% at Google Play. The Appstore from Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is not yet included in the revenue survey.
The top free download at the App Store in April was the 2048 puzzle game, while the Facebook app was the most popular free download at Google Play. The top free app at Amazon’s Appstore was Cut the Rope 2, followed by the Kindle edition of Frozen Free Fall from Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) at number two and Candy Crush Saga from King Digital Entertainment PLC (NYSE: KING) at number three.
The top paid app at the App Store, Google Play and the Appstore was Minecraft — Pocket Edition
The top grossing app at the App Store was Clash of Clans, followed by Candy Crush Saga. Clash of Clans was also number one at Google Play, but number two was Puzzles & Dragons from Japanese firm GungHo Online Entertainment.
