Black Friday Gimmicks & Desperation, A Win For Consumers (WMT, BBY, COST, TGT, KSS, GPS, M, JWN, MA, AMZN)

We are right at a week away from the highly awaited Black Friday for 2009’s holiday and Christmas season.  As you likely know, this is THE day that retailers look forward to all year and critically depend upon as an anchor to how each retailer’s full year earnings results turn out.  You may already be tired of Christmas ads and the holidays haven’t even arrived yet.  With over 10% unemployment, a recession-end that doesn’t feel like a recession-end, a very tight discretionary spending budget, and a general lack of consumer confidence, it is no surprise at all that the focus for the Holiday Season in 2009 is one of deals and thrift.

These are not in any particular order, but the promotions have been reviewed at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), Best Buy Co. (NYSE: BBY), Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST), Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT), Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS), Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS), Macy’s, Inc. (NYSE: M), and Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN).  There is also already promotion between MasterCard Incorporated (NYSE: MA) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN).  Admittedly, this is just a sampling of major outlets.

What is amazing is just how much of the deal-making is already out before the holiday season starts as retailers key off of each other.  It is almost impossible to avoid thinking how such a promotional Christmas and Holiday Season in 2009 is going to add pressure to margins at almost all the first-line retailers.

Thursday Earnings Retail Bonanza (DKS, FL, GPS, ROST, SHLD, BKE, PLCE, WTSLA, WSM, ZUMZ)

The earnings season is mostly winding down, but we still have a slew of retail earnings in the apparel and home categories.  On Thursday alone, we have earnings from Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. (NYSE: DKS), Foot Locker Inc. (NYSE: FL), Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS), Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROST), Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD), The Buckle (NYSE: BKE), The Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCE), Wet Seal Inc. (NASDAQ: WTSLA), Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM), and Zumiez, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZUMZ).

We have compiled data and analysis here using Thomson Reuters consensus estimates, recent metrics offered by the companies, relative performance, and more.  As with what we have seen at most retail and apparel earnings this week and last, many of these are richly valued and probably cannot just hope to please the bulls by meeting estimates on cost cutting and inventory management and then giving cautious guidance.

Earnings Duel on Deck: Lowe’s vs. Home Depot (LOW, HD)

Money Stack PicThis week’s earnings calendar is going to be dominated by retail earnings.  Early in the week you have the home improvement and building material wars with earnings first out of Lowe’s Companies Inc. (NYSE: LOW) on Monday and then Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) on Tuesday.

We have compiled estimates from Thomson Reuters, made some key comments on what to look for in each report, shown past performance, and given some added color on what to look for ahead.  We have some concerns here about how these stocks are valued.  We also showed the relative performance for 2009, the gains since March 9 that traders use as the official end of the death spiral, and we are also showing performance since July 31.

bull-and-bear-image2Earnings season has wound down now with over 85% of the S&P 500 Index having reported.  Still, there are some key companies posting their quarterly results and some companies were screened out of this list which are still actively traded or widely held stocks.  Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER), Priceline.com Inc. (NASDAQ: PCLN) and Sequenom Inc. (NASDAQ: SQNM) are on deck Monday. Also this week are earnings from Tyco International Ltd. (NYSE: TYC), Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), Macy’s, Inc. (NYSE: M), are Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN). Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) are our two DJIA components reporting this week.

We have included Thomson Reuters consensus estimates and included performance and other important color where applicable.  We have shown the share performance since the March 9 close that traders mark as the official end date of the bloody bear market.  One issue to consider is that we used the performance since June 30 to keep consistency for our prior previews even though some of the quarter-ends this coming week are technically August 31.

NYSE Floor ImageEarnings season may be winding down, but next week still has some very important companies that are economic indicators in and of themselves or are key stocks that have broad customer and investor bases.  Picking only ten companies leaves many key stocks out, but we have some here which will appeal to most investors and traders.  Among next week’s top earnings are Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK), Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT), MasterCard Incorporated (NYSE: MA), Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA), QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM),  and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. NYSE Floor ImageThis week was the crest of 2009 third quarter earnings season.  We still have a flood of reports next week and picking a mere top ten earnings to watch was very unfair to many key stocks.  But the ten earnings we have flagged as the top ten for next week are Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), Apollo Group Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL), Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO), Visa, Inc. (NYSE: V), Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), First Solar, Inc. More DJIA Component Earnings On Deck (AXP, MSFT, HON)

NYSE Floor ImageWe still have two DJIA components to report earnings this week.  If you can believe it this week marked 12 of the 30 components reporting earnings, and that takes us to a total of 18 of the 30 components that will have reported earnings after the end of the week.  This afternoon we have American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) on deck with earnings, and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is on deck tomorrow morning.  Also on deck Friday morning is Honeywell International Inc. (NYSE: HON), a former-DJIA component which many traders feel should have never been taken out of the DJIA.

We have compiled data using Thomson Reuters consensus data and added in color on options expectations, analyst calls, and technical analysis where appropriate. We have also included share performance from June 30, and then  provided performance since the March 9 close that traders are using as the official date of the end of the death spiral in the financial markets.

Next Week’s Top 10 Earnings on Deck (AAPL, UNH, YHOO, FCX, WFC, T, MCD, POT, MSFT, SLB)

NYSE Floor ImageWe have almost an endless wave of corporate earnings for the calendar Q3-2009 coming out next week.  We have what looks to be over 100 of the S&P 500 Index members reporting and what appears to be 12 current or ex-DJIA components reporting earnings as well.  Coming up with a Top 10 is almost unfair, but this coming week’s top ten earnings we will be focusing on are as follows: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH), Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX), Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC), AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD), Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (NYSE: POT), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Schlumberger Limited (NYSE: SLB).

We screened out the companies whose destiny has already been set by competitor earnings from this last week and screened out the ones which will have no real broad impact but are still widely held and actively traded. Lastly, we screened out the drug and medical companies as we are featuring those in their own group at BioHealthInvestor.com.  A more detailed estimate count from Thomson Reuters has been provided, along with data showing performance from the March 9 close and the June 30 closing date along with other pertinent information on each stock.

Top Financial Earnings on Deck (JPM, GS, C, BAC, PRSP, FAS, FAZ)

Money ImageThis week is the week we have 6 DJIA components reporting earnings as the first real week of earnings season, but the big financial stocks reporting will set the tone for how the rest of the financial sector’s earnings are going to be received.  In banking we have the cleanest bank in JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) reporting and the cleanest brokerage firm, ergo bank holding company with no bank, in Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS).  We also have Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) on Thursday and Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC).  While Prosperity Bancshares Inc. (NASDAQ: PRSP) is far from any national leadership bank, it is deemed by the investment community as one of the cleanest regional banks out there and its earnings are due Friday morning.

These earnings also going to have a direct impact each day in the trading of the highly volatile Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (NYSE: FAS) and Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: FAZ).  Be advised that Direxion has been making its own disclosures that these triple-leverage ETFs target effective moves during the trading session rather than how they trade through time and from closing bell to opening bell the next day.  Our take is that you could easily see double-digit percentage moves in these two ETFs on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday because of the sector volatility.

DJIA Component Earnings on Deck (AA, INTC, JNJ, JPM, IBM, BAC, GE, C)

NYSE Floor ImageThisis going to be a very key earnings week.  The only DJIA component to report its Q3 period report so far has been Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: JPM), International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM), Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC), and General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE).  Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) is no longer a DJIA component, but that is still a recent change.

Top 10 Tech Earnings on Deck (INTC, LLTC, ADTN, XLNX, ASML, IBM, AMD, FCS, GOOG, NOK)

DRAM ImageWe have many key technology stocks reporting earnings this coming week.  Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) will start things off to give us a read on semiconductors and PCs. Linear Technology Corp. (NASDAQ: LLTC), ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN), Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML), International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM), Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD), Fairchild Semiconductor International, Inc. (NYSE: FCS), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) are also all on deck for earnings this week.

We have compiled Thomson Reuters figures for the consensus estimates and appropriate performance data where needed.  We based the comparisons for the June 30 close to see how these have performed in the latest quarter and we also looked for that big inflection date of March 9 to see how much these have rallied from the height of the market panic selling.

Next Week’s Top 11 Earnings (INTC, JNJ, ABT, JPM, C, GS, GOOG, IBM, BAC, GE, HAL)

Bull and Bear ImageWe may have had earnings season officially start with Alcoa this week, but next week will be the real week for the launch of earnings season.  We now have an index to track the top 500 companies by market cap on a real-time basis via the 24/7 Wall St. Real-Time 500, and these top 10 earnings next week are generally among the top market caps and/or trading volumes.  In technology we have to look forward to Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), and IBM (NYSE: IBM).  General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is the conglomerate and Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) is the oil entrant.  Financial leaders JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C), Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS), and Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) are all due.  Tied to BioHealth are Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) and Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) on deck.

We have detailed the estimates on an earnings basis as far as estimates from Thomson Reuters, and we have also included how much these stocks have rallied since the start of the July quarter and how much these are up from the March 9 closing date that has been widely recognized as the last day of the mayhem before the rapid snap-back rally came into play.
