Deutsche Telekom (DT) May Offer To Buy Sprint (S)

sprintDeutsche Telekom’s US cellular carrier T-Mobile only has 33 million subscribers. That puts its a distant fourth in the market behind Sprint (S) Verizon Wireless (VOD)(VZ) and AT&T (T). It means that T-Mobile has only 12% of the American market which makes keeping up with the competition in terms of the size of its network and marketing costs extremely difficult.

Deutsche Telekom may remedy its trouble in the US by buying Sprint, which has about 50 million subscribers. The purchase would make its subscriber base much closer to Verizon’s and AT&T’s. Read More »

Cramer’s Mobile Web & Digital TV Stocks (AAPL, RIMM, PALM, QCOM, ADI, BRCM, MRVL, RFMD, SNDK, STAR, SWKS, TXN, RSH)

Cramer ImageIf you are a fan of and an investor in the mobile web via smartphones and portable devices, then you do not even have to be a dedicated fan of Jim Cramer to become a fan of Jim Cramer for at least the time being.  On tonight’s MAD MONEY on CNBC, Cramer endorsed this move to the mobile web as the next investor opportunity as huge opportunity for many companies in the space.  But he also noted that he wants to buy the tech companies on pullbacks as he thinks the market for technology stocks is taking a little breather here.  Cramer believes that there is room for all of these major companies to make major cash as a result of the switch to newer and fast smartphones and mobile web devices.  He thinks there is room for all companies like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) for the iPhone, Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) for the Blackberry, and Palm Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) for the new Pre smartphone.  He also noted QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) as a winner in the space.

Apple’s Aggressive Pricing Risks (AAPL, T, RIMM, PALM, S, VZ)

Apple LogoApple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is having more than its share of free press from the World Wide Developers Conference this week.  The big new push here seems to be on revamping the iPhone and MacBook.  But the pull to go to Mac is where the risks also come into play.  As Apple lowers its pricing threshold, its margins at least theoretically will come down as well.  And the new pricing is so far being described as “aggressive.”

The Failure Of 3G Hurts Apple (AAPL) And Its Competition

001_1The inadequacy of 3G networks to carry data and video for large numbers of handsets simultaneously is hurting the performance of the Apple (AAPL) iPhone. The problem only starts there. The weakness of 3G networks has also likely undermined the consumer’s opinion of new products from RIM (RIMM), the Samsung Instinct, and a host of new products from market leader Nokia (NOK).

None of the consumer electronics companies banking on 3G to drive handset sales to pre-recession levels are going to be able to count on their carrier partners for services that will show off the best features of phones that can download and manipulate files, access the internet, and play video. Sprint (S) Collapses Again As WiMax Patents Challenged

95129c_2Sprint (S) is down sharply today, heading toward penny-stock land. Shares are at $1.70, off their 52-week high of $13.90.

Much of the drop is due to its falling cellular subscriber base which contrasts to gains at rivals Verizon Wireless (VOD)(VZ) and AT&T (T). Sprint’s newest trouble could be just as bad.

Patent Pool To Drive WiMax Adoption, If Anyone Wants It (S)(CSCO)(INTC)(ALU)((CLWR)(T)

Several companies which hold most of the patents for super-fast wireless broadband technology WiMax have creating a patent pool to keep licensing fees down. Included in the new arrangement are Cisco (CSCO), Intel (INTC), Sprint (S), Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), Clearwire (CLWR), and Samsung.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "They have scheduled a conference call Monday to announce an organization, the Open Patent Alliance, to gather rights to WiMAX-related patents." PC makers will get better deals for using the tech.

Of course, none of this works if WiMax goes nowhere. So far, in the US, it has not made much progress. Sprint was going to build a national network and so was Clearwire. Neither of those worked because of the expense. Recently several companies like Intel have put cash into a new program to get that national network built.

The WiMax roll-out will be done with Sprint trying to upgrade its cellular customers. The company hopes to steal some consumers who use AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless. But, Sprint’s customer service is consider the worst in the world. Getting people to use a new product is tough when they hate the old one from the same firm. AT&T and Verizon are also working on faster networks of their own.

It is a lot of effort to get people to buy something they may not want.

UBS Cuts Communication Towers (AMT, CCI)

UBS has downgraded the US communications towers sector this morning, in a similar move seen just two days ago from RBC Capital.  The firm has downgraded Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) and American Tower (NYSE: AMT).  UBS had both companies covered with Buy ratings and the new ratings are now Neutral.  As one cellular carrier gets rolled up into another, it lowers the number of customers for the communication towers operators.  Even though they likely keep the same number of end users, the transfers to a larger carrier ultimately generate lower "per user" revenues.
