The Palm Margin Squeeze (PALM, S, AMZN, WMT)

Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) has sort of already fallen from grace despite all the hype behind the Palm Pre.  Throw in that Pixi too.  Discounting is trumping what may be weaker sales.  It turns out that Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) is offering the Palm Pre for Sprint for a mere $79.99.  Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) has it offered direct at $149.99 price after discounts and rebates at its site.  Sprint Nextel is also selling the Palm Pixi for $99.99, but the Palm Pixi is now for sale for $24.99 at Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT).  We confirmed all these prices on the websites, and this is going to confirm tough times for Palm and its finances.

Motorola (MOT) Droid Visits Manhattan

nokBy Douglas A. McIntyre

Some pieces of news are worth mentioning only in passing because they are interesting, but may not mean a thing. CNET says that over 100 people lined up at midnight to be early buyers of the new Motorola (NYSE:MOT) Droid handset at a Verizon (NYSE:VZ) store in Manhattan. The store in Herald Square had 500 phones in stock to meet the early demand.

The Droid is Motorola’s answer to the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and Palm (NASDAQ:PALM) Pre.

Time For T-Mobil To Be Sold To Sprint (S)

nokT-Mobile, the Deutsche Telekom-owned cellular carrier in America, is a failure and an abject one at that. The firm lost 77,000 subscribers in the third quarter. Most analysts blame the attrition on a poor line-up of handset products and tremendous competition from Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ)(NYSE:VOD) and AT&T (NYSE:T). Each of the two larger companies added over one million customers in the quarter ending September 30.

T-Mobile has 33.4 million customers in the US and its chances of doing well as the No.4 firm in its sector are fading to nothing. Read More »

Another Win For Apple (AAPL): The Touchscreen

appleIt is getting harder and harder to find any flaws in Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) businesses. The company’s shares trade at $190, very near their all-time high. Analysts expect record results from the company for the calendar fourth quarter as holiday shoppers drive better-than-usual sales of iPods, Macs, and iPhones.

comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR) released data that shows touchscreen smartphone sales up 159% from August 2008 to August 2009 when units sold hit 23.8 million. The growth was much greater than that for the total smartphone category which was up 63% in the US for the same period to 33.8 million units. Read More »

Low Demand For Apple (AAPL) iPhone In China

appleIn the United States, people will line up for blocks and camp out in the cold to be the first customers into Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) retail stores when the consumer electronics wonder introduces a new product. The Chinese response to the introduction of the iPhone was muted.

The Wall Street Journal reports that iPhone sales in China may be slow, at least compared to those in the US. Among the reasons are a retail price that can be over $1,000 and the fact that two million iPhones has already been sold through unauthorized dealers. Read More »

Handset Growth Expected To Surge With Apple (AAPL) Is The Lead

appleThe global handset business has faltered due to the recession. Research firm Strategic Analytics says that worldwide handset sales fell to 291 million units in Q3 down from 304 million in the same period a year ago. But, the firm expects Q4 to be a period of improving sales compared to last year, and part of that improvement is likely to be driven by strong sales of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. Read More »

TeleNav Files For IPO, Maybe Too Late (TNAV, GOOG, GRMN, S, T)

Burning Money PicIf you watched any news this week about Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) launching a free personal navigation service on its Android phones, then you know it was a bad week for Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN).  This wasn’t even really unknown news, although the timing caught many by surprise.   And now most IPOs coming to market are getting sold and not bought.  So if I were to tell you that a company called TeleNav, Inc. whose first line of their own description said “We are a leading provider of location-based services, or LBS, including voice guided navigation, on mobile phones” filed to come public via an Initial Public Offering the question is: what would you think?

If you can believe it, that is just what happened late Friday afternoon.  No terms were issued, but TeleNav did say that it plans to sell up to $75 million for filing purposes.   No exchange was listed and the company plans to trade under the stock ticker “TNAV” after the IPO.

Is Google’s Navigation Launch A Category Killer? (GOOG, TRMB, GRMN)

GOOG ImageGoogle Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and its ‘new’ navigation via Google Maps Navigation is putting the hurt on the GPS competitors.  Trimble Navigation (NASDAQ: TRMB) posted income of $15.6 million, a 60% drop, in its quarterly profits yesterday and revenue was down 18% to $269.7 million.  Unfortunately, the guidance was under expectations.  And shares are only down 0.2% at $21.25 after recovering from morning lows.  Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN) is getting clipped far worse as the ‘launch’ from Google seems to be a direct assault on its model, and Garmin’s earnings are just a week away.  Today’s only real shock may be in the timing of the launch.

Credit & Equity Analyst Ratings Duel at Palm (PALM)

Palm LogoPalm Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) has lost that massive stock surge that we saw for what felt like way too long throughout 2009.  There are two key analyst calls that now may act as an analyst duel.  One is yesterday’s BMO Capital Markets and the other is non other Standard & Poor’s.  Throw in a high, but declining, short interest and the race is back on in Palm as to whether its future is made of shinola or made of something else in the notorious analogy.

Palm was weak yesterday and fell $0.90 to downgraded yesterday to $13.38 after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to an “Underperform” rating from an already neutral “Market Perform” rating.  BMO already took its sub-market target down to $10.00 from $11.00.  BMO was concerned over Apple’s iPhone and R-I-M’s Blackberry competition, as well as what is coming down the pipe from Google’s Android phones.  Yet this morning we have an upgrade on the corporate credit side of Palm from Standard & Poor’s.

T-Mobile Offers Everything Free To Battle AT&T, Sprint, And Verizon

nokThe T-Mobile US division of German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom (NYSE:DT) has run a distant fourth in cellular subscribers in America well behind AT&T (NYSE:T), Sprint (NYSE:S), and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ)(NYSE:VOD).

Google’s (GOOG) Android Could Squeeze Out Apple (AAPL)

appleNokia’s (NYSE:NOK) Symbian mobile operating system has dominated the handset software business for years. Microsoft’s mobile Windows has made some progress in picking up market share during the last decade, but its success has been very modest.

The operating systems which are part of the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and RIM (NYSE:RIMM) Blackberry were almost instant successes because of the popularity of their handsets.

Among these four powerful mobile OS players there seemed to be no room for a fifth, and certainly not a fifth that could take any significant market share. Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) is in the process of proving that conventional wisdom wrong. Read More »

appleApple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will launch the iPhone in China with China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) on October 30 with “1,000 points of sale,” according to a transcription of the company’s earnings call done by Seeking Alpha.

Sprint Finally Acquires iPCS (S, IPCS)

Sprint LogoSprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) has finally figured a way to cure its affiliate lawsuits.  The wireless operator is acquiring iPCS, Inc. What If Apple (AAPL) Misses Earnings?

appleWall St. believes that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will make $1.42 a share for the quarter that just ended on $9.2 billion in revenue. Both figures would be well over 10% higher than a year ago.  Apple would have to sell about of 2.9 million Macs, 10.5 million iPods and 6.9 million iPhones to hit those numbers.

Fulfilling those expectations will be a tall order. iPod sales dropped 7% in the June quarter. Mac sales were only up 4% to 2.6 million, and iPhone sales reached 5.2 million. Read More »

T-Mobile And Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Offer $100 Gift Card For Lost Data
