I think the most likely scenario is for GM to file Chapter 11 and get $25 billion in DIP financing from the TARP II. There is no time to get new legislation through Congress and that is the only funding big enough to have a hope of surviving bankruptcy. The stock holders will be wiped out and the bond holders will go to the back of the bus. Perhaps the UAW will get serious about negotiating if a judge can void the current labour contract .

The old adage: "We're too big; "they" cannot afford to let us fail". Sad. For America. When a business has been run this poorly for this long its time to let capitalism work. If the administration had real guts, they'd let this thing take a more natural course because ultimately whether we pump billions into GM, it will fail and that's actually...natural. Forests have fires to clear the land for new growth: we let companies fail to make room for new and (hopefully) better ones.

How long the rest of America supposed to support GM and its lazy and corrupt unions? It is the time for GM, its unions, and suppliers to take a huge pay cut.
No more a free lunch. America and its people can not afford them any more.

Either they go broke or the rest of America. I afraid that Obama and the Congress will chose them at American people expense.

The general comparison of the possibility that favoring battery technology development for vehicles could turn out to be similar to the ethanol boondoggle may or may not be valid. If batteries are used to promote what are being called "hybrid-electric vehicles" which are cars that use both liquid gasoline and also battry power, that is better than cars that only use liquid gasoline, but not as good as electric/battery powered cars that only use battery power and plug in to recharge. The concern is that they will try to delay 100% electric/battery cars by arguing to the public that we still need "hybrids" that also use or can use gas, even though some portion of their power is supplied by batteries/electric.

The statement that Beacon Power's (BCON) technology is not ready yet is not borne out in statements by the company or media reporting about it. BCON is at the forefront of the type of technology they are expanding, and is expected to be profitable soon.
