Meet Apple’s Newest iPhone

September 12, 2017 by Chris Lange

The Apple 10 year anniversary for the iPhone is underway and we have already seen some incredible developments. Not only is the new Apple campus impressive but the Apple Watch broke the mold as well. Although those were great, the iPhone presentation was earth-shattering.

24/7 Wall St. has even more coverage on the presentation.

For some quick highlights from Apple already, the newest iteration of the Apple Watch was the first product mentioned in the presentation. What sets apart the Apple Watch from its previous generations is that the Series 3 will feature Cellular, meaning users can take the Watch on the go and take calls, messages, and more without having to bring their phone along. Apple Watch is also featuring Apple Music which is able to stream over 40 million songs through the Watch.

CEO, Tim Cook made a grand introduction the newest iPhone, as a device that has changed the world, and he’s not wrong. The iPhone is the crux of Apple’s technology and the central focus of the company.

iPhone 8 is a huge step forward for iPhones. Phil Schiller, senior vice President of Worldwide Marketing, introduced the new design for the phone that features a few colors and glass on both sides of the smartphone. The iPhone 8 is microscopically sealed to prevent dust and water from getting into it. The phone has a Retina display and stereo speakers that are 25% louder than the iPhone 7.

Schiller also announced the breakthrough A11 bionic chip, the most powerful and smartest chip in a smartphone. The A11 is 25% faster than the previous A10 chip. The GPU for the chip is 30% faster than the A10 and used for accelerating graphics in games and machine learning.

Camera features faster autofocus in varying light conditions, with its new ISP. 12 megapixel sensor. More power efficient. More pixels. Portrait mode sharper details better focus in low light; it’s in beta now but will ship with the iPhone 8. Creates a depth map and can change lighting contours. The camera can shoot film with 1080p with 240 fps.

Augmented reality was mentioned in connection with the camera as well. Schiller showed a few apps that feature AR where individuals watching a sporting event can turn the camera’s focus on the field and see players’ statistics in real time. Another AR app shown can identify constellations by moving the camera across the night sky.

With the new glass back, the phone now features wireless charging just by setting the iPhone down on a charger. The new iPhone will support Qi, which is the standard for wireless charging.

The capacity for the iPhone 8 starts at 64 GB and goes for $699, and it tops out at 256 GB. The iPhone 8 Plus starts at 64 GB and sells for $799.

Preorder for the iPhone 8 is available on September 15 with a release date on September 22. The upgrade to iOS 11 will be available September 19.

One more thing.

After an impressive iPhone 8 presentation, Schiller announced the iPhone X. This iPhone features glass on both the front and the back.

Super Retina display that features a higher level of quality than the iPhone 8, the smartphone has 458 pixels per inch which is record setting for any smartphone, ever. The OLED display features HDR as well.

This iPhone does not have a home button. Users simply tap on the screen to wake it up and to access the home screen users just swipe up.

How do you unlock the iPhone X? The phone features Face ID where users look into the iPhone and once the camera recognizes the user’s face it unlocks. This works through machine learning and neural networks.

Some might be asking aren’t all these features a drain on battery life, to which Schiller responded they are. And that is why the iPhone X will also feature 2 more hours of battery life than the last generation of iPhones.

The iPhone X will be priced at $999 for the 64GB model and is available for preorder on October 22, with a release on November 3.
