European Job Cuts Worsen--Bloomberg

On the tails of several announcements of large jobs cuts by big companies in Europe, Bloomberg has reported research that layoffs have accelerated from last year. It is a sign, the news service reports, that the recession which has spread throughout much of the EU has worsened, at least as far as big companies are concerned

Bloomberg reports

Announced workforce reductions surged to 94,369 through Feb. 10 from 26,561 a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Employers based in Western Europe accounted for the biggest group of job-cut disclosures, threatening to add to unemployment in the euro area already running at a 13-year high.
