Apple, Google Still Lead in Smartphone Hardware, Platform Market Share (AAPL, GOOG, RIM, MMI, SSNLF, MSFT, NOK)

March 6, 2012 by Paul Ausick

The latest data from comScore Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR) reporting share in the smartphone market has not changed much. The three-month averages for November through January show that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was the only hardware vendor to gain share, and that Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) still owns a substantial lead in the platform market.

Handset makers Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), Motorola Mobility Inc. (NYSE: MMI), Samsung Electronics (OTC: SSNLF), and LG Electronics either remained flat (RIM) or lost share.

Google gained 2.3% in the platform market to capture a 48.6% share and Apple gained 1.4%. to grab a 29.5% share of the market. Both Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) lost platform share in the November-January period. The new Nokia/Microsoft smartphone offerings either didn’t move the needle or were not included in the latest comScore report.

Apple’s share in the handset market rose from 10.8% in the October-December period to 12.8% in the latest report. The company’s share of the platform market, however, was flat at 29.5%, perhaps indicating a slight cooling in enthusiasm for the iPhone 4S as consumers wait for the next iteration of Apple’s phenomenally popular smartphone.
