Samsung Files Suit Against Apple in Korea (AAPL, SSNLF, GOOG)

Most people expect Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) to show off its new iPad 3 today. What most people did not expect is that the company would get hit by yet another patent infringement lawsuit by rival Samsung Electronics (OTC: SSNLF), this time in South Korea.

This lawsuit joins about 30 others in 10 countries that the two companies have filed against one another in the past few years. Samsung is the leading smartphone handset maker in the world, and uses the Android operating system from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), another target of Apple lawsuits.

The Korean company told the TechCrunch blog the basis for the suit:

Samsung has today (March 6) filed a lawsuit against Apple in the Seoul Central District Court over its continued infringement of three utility patents in its iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

This lawsuit is separate from the proceedings filed against Apple in Seoul in April 2011 regarding infringement of telecommunications standards-related patents.

Samsung will continue to assert its intellectual property rights and defend its investment in innovation in order to ensure our continued growth in the mobile industry.

The inclusion of the iPad 2 in this case is a first for Samsung in Korea.
