In yet another move designed to get the European Union to eliminate the carbon emissions fee it charges airlines using EU airports, the government of China is withholding approval of an order for 35 Airbus A320s and could delay approval for 10 Airbus A380 jumbo jets. Airbus aircraft are manufactured by the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (OTC: EADSY).
China has already forbidden its airlines from paying the fees without a special exemption from the government.
The governments of China, the US, Russia, and India are among those protesting the EU’s carbon fee. The fees are estimated to cost the world’s airlines €1.125 billion in 2012.
A spokesman for Airbus is cited at CNBC.com as saying that 26 countries are making “retaliation threats” against the aircraft maker as a result of the carbon emissions fees.
