The 4 Stocks That Lifted the Dow on Friday

July 10, 2015: Markets opened higher for the second day in a row on Friday following a better-than-expected increase in inventory levels. Even Fed chairwoman Janet Yellen’s remarks that a rate hike is still on the table for late this year didn’t dampen enthusiasm. A request from Greece for additional loans was not rejected out of hand, and the Shanghai Composite index rose 4.5% today. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 1.30% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 1.34%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 1.65%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Friday was UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) which traded up 2.49% at $122.31. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.74 to $124.11. Trading volume was around 3 million shares, more than 25% below the daily average of around 4.4 million. The health insurer had no specific news today..

Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) traded up 2.09% at $68.45. The stock’s 52-week range is $48.80 to $370.69. Around 3.3 million shares traded hands today, about half the daily average of around 6.8 million. The credit card issuer had no news today, but the positive developments in Greece and China pushed all the blue chippers up today.

International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) traded up 2.10% at $167.29. The stock’s 52-week range is $149.52 to $196.40. Trading volume was about 20% below the daily average of around 3.7 million. IBM stock is the second-most heavily weighted (6.24% as of Thursday’s close) of the 30 DJIA stocks and had no news today.

The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) traded higher by 1.19%% at $207.24. The stock’s 52-week range is $162.38 to $218.77. Trading volume was about half the daily average of around 2.6 million. The most heavily weighted stock among the Dow 30 (7.8%) had no specific news today.

All 30 Dow stocks are on track to close higher today.
