Is There Enough Room for a Sarah Palin Channel?

The world of cable and network TV has been converging with new media for years. Now it looks as though a new channel is soon to be launched — The Sarah Palin Channel — and for $9.95 per month. An introductory video called the Palin Channel a news channel that is a lot more than news.

It will be interesting to see how this gets received. Undoubtedly it will have extremely conservative backers, and the subscribers will be made of almost entirely of conservative views, plus the more liberal audience who is tasked with reporting about Palin’s ongoing coverage.

What is interesting is that the channel is not just an independent effort. It is a part of TAPP TV Network, a recently launched niche-based disruptive media station outlet. TAPP’s co-founders are Jeff Gaspin, former chairman of NBC Universal Television, and Jon Klein, former president of CNN/U.S.

Palin is said to be serving as executive editor and will oversee all content posted to the channel. That is said to include timely videos her own commentary on issues.

While Sarah Palin is a name that strikes a chord with or against many Americans, the real interesting aspect here is whether this business model can and will succeed for future venues. There is already a massive number of independent channels and independent subscriber services that go through or bypass the traditional network and cable TV model.

Instead of Palin-only, it appears as though the Palin members will get a chance to chance to post their own videos, to send questions to Ms. Palin and to participate in online video chats with Palin and other subscribers.

Again, it is hard to know if this effort will take off or end up among the hundreds of media ventures that never really take off. Glenn Beck has done it successfully with the Blaze, and other conservatives have undertaken offerings of a sort as well. Now it just depends on how large an audience potential is and how much room there is for competing content within that niche space.
