Best Buy Promotes Connected Home, Internet of Things

While there has been plenty of buzz for several years about the Internet of Things (IoT) and several products have brought to market that have IoT capability, only a relative few have caught much public attention (i.e., purchases) by consumers. Thermostats, speaker systems, smart plugs, coffee makers and security video cameras are examples of the variety of devices that can be wirelessly connected to a home network and managed from a smartphone.

This week Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) has focused its weekend promotion on the connected home, another name for IoT. Pricing is not noted as discounted, but the company is offering its price match guarantee on the items we looked at.

According to Best Buy’s website, it will match the price at the time of sale of any “Designated Major Online Retailer or at a local retail competitor’s store.” The designated and local retailer list includes Amazon.com, Bhphotovideo.com, Crutchfield.com, Dell.com, HP.com, Newegg.com and TigerDirect.com, according to the website. There are also some exclusions, so do your homework at Best Buy’s site.

Now on to the promoted products. First is a third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat in stainless steel (model #T3007ES) for $249.99. Two-day shipping is free for the device manufactured by a division of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), the parent company of Google.

A four-pack of Netgear Arlo Smart Home indoor/outdoor, wireless, high-definition security cameras (model #VMS3430-100NAS) is selling for $499.99. The package includes a base station in addition to the cameras. Two-day shipping is free. A three-pack is also available for $449.99.

A voice-controlled Amazon Echo (model #B00X4WHP5E) sells for $179.99, the same price that Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) shows for the device. Two-day shipping is also free.

The Perfect Bake Pro smart scale in stainless steel (model #PBP016) sells for $99.99 and free two-day shipping is including. What makes this kitchen scale “smart” is its ability to communicate with a smartphone app. Here’s the description from Best Buy’s website: “Simply assemble your ingredients in the order the smartphone app tells you to, and weigh them out one by one, only listening for the ding as this smart scale tells you to stop.”
