Efforts to inoculate the U.S. population are well underway. Still, the coronavirus continues to spread and the already staggering public health toll will no doubt continue to rise. To date, 32,334,764 Americans have been infected with COVID-19 — and 575,980 of them have died as a result.

The disease’s spread has not been even across the country, however, and some parts of the U.S. have been hit especially hard, while others have been spared some of the worst effects. In the Northeast, an area that covers nine states from New Jersey and Pennsylvania up through New England, there have been a total of 5,586,825 confirmed cases — or 9,957 per 100,000 people. For context, the national per capita infection rate stands at 9,883 cases per 100,000 people.

Of the nine Northeastern states, New Jersey has the second most COVID-19 cases per capita. So far, there have been a total of 1,007,555 known infections in New Jersey, or 11,310 for every 100,000 people.

For its population size, New Jersey has a disproportionate number of COVID-19 infections in the region. Home to about 8,908,500 people, New Jersey accounts for 15.9% of the total population in the Northeast. However, known cases in New Jersey account for 18.0% of all known cases in the region.

All COVID-19 data used in this story are current as of May 10, 2021.

These are all the counties in New Jersey where COVID-19 is slowing (and where it’s still getting worse).
