Implications of Major S&P Component Changes (MJN, MBI, V, CIEN, CLF, DYN, KBH, GMCR, BTH, CHP, CVG, ROST, CLF, SNH, ATW, DY, KELYA, ELY)

Standard & Poor’s often makes S&P index changes for the S&P 500, the S&P Mid-Cap 400 and the S&P Small Cap 600 at the end of the year.  This probably is not going to be the last component shuffling before the end of the year, but this is likely to create some action in several very active stocks.  Some of the big changes announced Friday evening were Mead Johnson Nutrition Co. (NYSE: MJN), MBIA Corp. (NYSE: MBI), Visa Inc. (NYSE: V), Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN), Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: CLF), Dynegy Inc. (NYSE: DYN), KB Home Inc. (NYSE: KBH) and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR).

Some of these changes will only have minor buy and sell effects from S&P index mutual funds and ETFs, but some will see significant changes.

Dycom Industries (DY) Posts loss on lawsuit settlement. Falls to $11.88 from 52-week high of $34.13.

Nortel (NT) Big loss and lay-offs. Down to $9.67 from 52-week high of $30.27.

Journal Register (JRC) Sells off to $1.19 to more bad news from newspaper Industry. Has 52-week high of $7.46.

Gannett (GCI) More newspaper industry woes. Drops down to $31.50 from 52-week high of $62.70.

CV Therapeutics (CVTX) Misses Q4 numbers and sells down to $6.13 from 52-week high of $13.74.

Autodesk (ADSK) Bad quarter pushes share to $32.36 from 52-week high of $51.32.

EnerNoc (ENOC) Fourth quarter loss drops shares to $16.25 from 52-week high of $50.50.

Dycom Industries (DY) Company lowers forecast. Falls to $15 from 52-week high of $34.13.

Nortel Networks (NT) Sel-off at the end of the day. No news. Falls to $10.28 from 2-week high of $31.79.

Tapestry Pharmaceuticals (TPPH) Company cuts 65% of work-force move toward Chapter 11. Falls to $.04 from 52-week high of $2.07.

Nxstage Medical (NXTM) Bigger than expected quarterly loss. Sells off to $8.01 from 52-week high of $15.61.

Neurometrix (NURO) Company has loss in quarter. Falls to $4.04 from 52-week high of $12.10.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) Costs running higher than expected. Drops to $16.04 from 52-week high of $41.42.
