Urban Outfitters Chairman Unloads Stock (URBN)

Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) been immune for the most part from the stock market carnage.  Shares closed down almost 5% at $34 today, but the stock still trades well nto the upper echelon of its $21.09 to $38.40 trading range of the last 52-weeks.

Insider selling is a part of the markets, and it isn’t a signal of of bad things.  But when we see sales of certain sizes, we have to look further.  In an SEC filing today, Chairman of the Board Richard Hayne noted he sold 1,388,000 shares at prices of $35.64 to $36.12 on Monday and Tuesday.  This represents a total value of more than $49.6 million.

This is nowhere near his entire stake in the company, so don’t think that this is a wholesale exodus on his part. Hayne still owns more than 33.6 million shares, roughly 20% of the company’s common stock.  But a sale of nearly $50 million will raise some eyebrows in a market when traders and investors are easily spooked.

Urban Outfitters Proves Its Performance (URBN)

Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN) showed why its stock has done well while others in retail have floundered for much of the last quarter.  The apparel store posted earnings of $0.32 EPS on 29% revenues growth to $465.4 million, and First Call estimates were $0.29 and $463.5 million consensus.  This was also record earnings for the quarter.

The company had already shown comparable sales cumulatively generating an 11% gain, and were broken down as 6% at Urban Outfitters, 18% at Anthropologie, and 19% at Free People.

Shares are trading up 6% initially this morning at $31.18, and that is nearly a 52-week high with a 52-week trading range of $19.20 to $31.32.  If these prices hold on the stock, this will mark more than a 25% share gain since the January lows.

Urban Outfitters: Rare Retail Winner Ahead of Earnings (URBN)

On Thursday morning we’ll get to see earnings out of Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN). The estimates for the specialty retail company from First Call are $462.28 million in revenues.  Next quarter estimates are $383.06 million in revenues. Estimates for fiscal Jan-2009 are $1.82 billion in revenues.  Because of EPS revisions, we’ll give more formal EPS targets as the news event is closer.

Analysts have an average price target north of $31.00 and Urban Outfitters’ 52-week trading range is $19.20 to $31.32.  This one has over 20.7 million shares in the short interest upon last look.

Despite the stock being within about 10% of its 52-week highs at $28.78, it still seems like many had mostly forgotten about Urban Outfitters as a stock for quite some time after that exponential rise came to maturity in 2005.  What is interesting is that it is also toward the higher-end of its trading range highs from back in 2005.  Stay tuned for this one, because it is fairly hard to find a retail stock that has done this well over the last six months.

Jim Cramer’s Stimulus Package & Turnaround Stocks

On tonight’s MAD MONEY on CNBC, Jim Cramer noted that selling stocks today isn’t a good idea and that this will be good for retail stocks and others too.  You have to keep in mind the same-store-sales as the key metric, but here are his retail names he went through:

  • In retail, Cramer likes Guess? (NYSE: GES), J.Crew (NYSE: JCG), Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW), Liz Claiborne (NYSE: LIZ), Jones Apparel (NYSE: JNY), Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ: COST), TJX Corp. (NYS: TJX), Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN)… and he likes Darden (NYSE: DRI) in restaurants.

Cramer actually talked positive about one homebuilder and a mortgage player:

  • Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL) will actually be a winner on the higher GSE increase in the conforming loan price cap.  In mortgages the increase in the cap will help Thornburg Mortgages (NYSE: TMA).

He thinks that takeovers are coming, and he is under the impression that Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC) may actually get taken over after a huge drop.  He thinks it is just too valuable to others.  Just FYI, Cramer did discuss this Bear Stearns takeover possibility on TheStreet.com earlier this morning or this afternoon.  In short, he thinks that this might merit a reason to stop being so cynical.  He wants to buy something in retail and something in banking.

Last week Cramer went value fishing for technology companies that he thought were either overlooked during the meltdown or that had been oversold.  Here were his picks in technology:
