Top Day Trader Alerts (SWHC, RGR, MON, MOO, ADM, RNWK, TXN, YHOO)

These are this morning’s top pre-market day trader alert stocks.  We have more color and more detail on price and volume analysis linked through to each at VSInvestor.com:

Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SWHC) is up over 10% and strong enough to make Dirty Harry proud. We are looking for a secondary trade in Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. (NYSE: RGR) on this one.

Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) is getting worse on higher volume after it gave an earnings warning bad enough that traders need to watch Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) and Archer-Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM) for secondary trades.

Real Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RNWK) is surging, maybe almost too much had this not still been way off 52-week highs, on a Apple iPhone and iTouch app approval.

Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TXN) is not very exciting considering raised guidance.

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) is running higher on an upgrade and on a CEO interview with shares up now over 3%.

You can join our open email distribution list which goes out several times per week if you wish to be notified by email when the top day trader alerts hit, along with news of IPO’s, key offerings, guru investor data on Buffett and others, mergers, and more.

ADM Misses on Big Charges (ADM)

bear9

Agricultural giant Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) reporated earnings of a paltry $8 million (EPS of $0.01) on sales of $14.8 billion for its 2009 third quarter which ended on March 31st. Analysts had been expecting EPS of $0.49 on revenues of $16.94 billion.

The earnings hit came from a $132 million non-cash after-tax charge on currency losses sustained by an equity investor in ADM and a $97 million income tax charge related to an ADM investment. Okay, so before the unusual items earnings would have been $232 million. That’s still 36% lower than earnings for the same period last year. And revenue fell 21% year-over-year. Read More »

The “Green” Hypocrisy: America’s Corporate Environment Champions Pollute The World

oil1 “Green is green as in the color of money”
- Brand director of General Electric, Brandweek, July 26, 2006

“Greenwashing” is the act of misleading the public regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product, service, or business line.  Due to the public’s increased awareness of environmental issues, including global warming, deforestation, and the loss of endangered species, greenwashing has become a staple of corporations marketing efforts.  All of the companies in this article have made some effort to address these concerns.  Some of them appear to be trying harder than others, and even a few of them have made legitimate efforts to become responsible corporate stewards of the environment.  Evidenced by the support of environmental groups and corporate responsibility professionals, many of these companies’ green initiatives have made a positive impact. Valero Takes the VeraSun Prize (VLO, ADM, VSUNQ)

Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE:VLO) has won the auction for seven ethanol plants formerly owned by VeraSun Energy Corporation (VSUNQ), which is now in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Valero will pay $477 million for the plants.

According to the AP, Archer Daniels Midland Inc. (NYSE:ADM) “participated” in the auction, but did not buy anything. ADM must be too busy looking at Brazilian sugar-cane ethanol producers.

Three other lender groups submitted bids totaling $576 million for other VeraSun refineries and properties. Valero will operate its new ethanol refineries through its Valero Renewable Fuels subsidiary.

Valero’s 52-week range is $13.94-$55/share. Shares closed at $18.50 yesterday. Buying ethanol refineries is likely to keep the price down closer to the bottom than to the top of that range.

ADM Shows Issues in Corn vs. Crude (ADM, VSE, APC, HOC, PEIX, AVR)

Adm_logoThis morning’s earnings report from Archer-Daniels-Midland (NYSE:ADM) offers proof that if a company is going to be in the ethanol business, it had better have a fallback position.  ADM blew past analysts’ estimates of $0.69 per share and $15.98 billion in revenue, hitting EPS of $1.63 on revenue of $21.16 billion. Both figures are more than double those for the same period last year.

Citigroup Pans Ethanol… On Flooding (VSE, BIOF, ADM)

Ethanol stocks appear to be under pressure this morning.  Citigroup has downgraded the group to a SELL rating, partially based upon the Midwest flooding.  VeraSun (NYSE: VSE) and BioFuel Energy (NASDAQ: BIOF) were cut to a "SELL" rating from "BUY" and Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM) was cut to "HOLD" from "BUY."

Over the last week and a half the flooding has caused irreparable damage to this year’s corn market.  Corn prices have risen and are likely to destroy margins despite the subsidy. Cash costs are running above sell-through rates for small and mid-sized producers and Citi even believes some may be  forced to shut down over the coming months.

A Requiem For Ethanol (ADM)(AVR)(VSE)

Very few people drive down the miles-long highways and dirt roads in the middle of the country to see combines cut grain and fertilizer trucks spread chemicals. The picture is not monochromatic, at least not up close.

The expense of commercial fertilizers is so high that growing pastures for feed cattle is no longer viable. Processed human waste in pellet form is one of the few remaining methods for improving field production for crops which do not bring high prices. An entire segment of the agricultural industry is being forced to it knees.

At the same moment, farmers of corn, wheat, rice, and soybeans cannot plant enough crops to keep up with demand. The price of fertilizer matters much less to them.

New data from The U.S. Agriculture Department show a drop in total acres devoted to corn added to demand for ethanol production will keep prices for the commodity high through 2009. Corn now has to compete with other crops for yield-per-acre.

According to The Wall Street Journal "the U.S. ethanol industry is projected to use a record four billion bushels of corn, or one-third of the harvest that U.S. farmers are expected to collect this autumn." The federal government has provided a number of incentives to keep the ethanol industry in business. The desire to replace oil demand is a powerful, but perhaps lost cause. At. least for ethanol.

Wall St. is already creating the beginning of the end for ethanol stocks. Shares in Aventine Renewable Energy (AVR) are down to $4 from a 52-week high of nearly $20. Verasun (VSE) is off to $6 from a 52-week high of over $18  Of course, larger companies like ADM (ADM) have a small part of their business devoted to ethanol production, so small that the impact to the value their shares has been largely insulated.

As the choice with commodities like corn moves to one of food versus fuel and commodities prices versus the price of gasoline, ethanol companies are bound to lose.

Every once in awhile a promising industry grows up and then disappears, both in the matter of a few short years. The ethanol business is one of them

Archer-Daniels-Midland Set For Earnings (ADM, VSE, PEIX, AVR)

On Monday, we’ll get to see earnings out of Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (NYSE:ADM). The estimates from First Call for the agriculture giant are $0.74 EPS on $12.65 Billion in revenues.  Estimates for fiscal June 2008 are $2.70 EPS on $52.27 billion in revenues.

Analysts have an average price target of $47. If Friday’s closing prices are any indicator and if the earnings were coming out immediately, it appears that options traders would be pricing in a move of up to $2.00 in either direction.

We’ve covered this one before, although we were skeptical of any buyout rumor.  We still are, although a buyer would have done well in the stock. As a $29 Billion company and one of the larger beneficiaries of ethanol, we’d be watching some of the other ethanol stocks like Andersons Inc (NASDAQ: ANDE), Aventine Renewable Energy, Inc. (NYSE: AVR), Cosan Limited (NYSE:CZZ), BioFuel Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: BIOF), Pacific Ethanol (NASDAQ: PEIX), US BioEnergy Corporation (NASDAQ:USBE), VeraSun Energy Corp (NYSE: VSE), and others.

Archer-Daniels-Midland’s 52-week trading range is $31.28 to $47.33.
