The “AAA” Club: Why The Safest Companies Bet The Market

There are only six companies left with "AAA" ratings from both S&P and Moody’s. The are Automatic Data Processing (ADP), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK), GE (GE), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Exxon (XOM), and Toyota (TM).

Wall St. might think that companies with strong ratings would be modest market performers because they make "safe" business decisions. In reality, all of the companies, except Toyota, have out-performed the S&P over the last year. Toyota at least has the excuse that it operates in an industry which has had two brutal years.

The trick for doing well might seem to be that the companies are diversified. But, that is not entirely true, especially with Exxon and ADP. More likely, the firms do extraordinarily well because they have a very large portion of their business coming from outside the US. While the market may be slowing here, it is still robust in some emerging markets and these operations are moving assets to those regions.

The advantages of being global can be overstated. Emerging countries can be politically unstable. But, for the time being, they produce.

Goldman Sachs Changes on Conviction Buy List in Tech (DOX, ADP, SNCR, SVR)

This morning Goldman Sachs has announced some changes to its CONVICTION BUY LIST:

  • Amdocs (NYSE: DOX) is being added to the Americas Conviction Buy list with a 49% return potential to its target after its earnings report.  Recent order flows should give the company a healthy 2008 with accelerating revenue growth and limited macroeconomic headwinds.
  • Automatic Data Processing (NYSE: ADP) is being kept officially as a Buy rating at Goldman, but it is being pulled off of the Conviction Buy List as part of a "moving away from macro-sensitive trends."  ADP is down 15.5% since being added, slightly worse than the S&P at -14.3%, and it has underperformed the S&P over a 6-month and 12-month period.

In the larger Amdocs call away from macro-sensitivity, Goldman Sachs said it is also noting Synchronoss Technologies (NASDAQ: SNCR) as one of its best buy ideas (has a Buy rating).  Goldman is also becoming increasingly optimistic on Syniverse (NYSE: SVR) (although it has a neutral rating today).

Earnings Preview: Paychex (PAYX) (June 2007)

Trading volume in Paychex Inc. (PAYX-NASDAQ) is fairly light ahead of its earnings after the close.  First Call estimates are $0.36 EPS and $496.3 million in revenues.  Today also marks the year-end report for the Fiscal Year ended May-2007.

Volume is barely past 1 million shares past the mid-point of the day and it usually trades more than 3.5 million shares in a day.  Options traders are not looking for more than a $1.00 move in either direction, and at $39.90 shares are closer to the higher-end of the $32.98 to $42.50 52-week trading range.  If it gives guidance for the quarter ahead, the current estimates are $0.40 EPS and $513 million in revenues.

If the Paychex (PAYX) meets estimates it will have a trailing P/E of 28.3 and its forward P/E ratio for 2008 will be 24.75; and its current market cap is $15.2 Billion.  Automatic Data (ADP-NYSE) is much larger but more diversified competitor at a $26 Billion market cap and it trades at 26-times expected Fiscal June-2006 earnings estimates and trades at 22.3-times 2008 estimates.

With an on again off again economic stance and with the stock closer to historic highs, it is probably not that surprising that volume is light ahead of its report.

Cramer’s Got 2 More Financial Service Buyout Picks (TSS, ADP, ADS, BSG, FDC, SNV)

Cramer came on MAD MONEY saying he thinks that Total Systems Services (TSS-NYSE) is one that can be taken over next in a sector and $40.00 would be a fair price based on Alliance Data prices.  Synovis (SNV) is the parent and Third point is now being an activist investor.  The earnings growth of 18% is reason enough to own this.  The only issue he has in the sector is that Automatic Data Processing (ADP) might be acquired first.  Alliance Data Services (ADS) was just acquired, First Data (FDC) is going private, and even Bisys Group (BSG) got gobbled up.  We’ll see, but investors need to keep in mind that some of the premiums in this sector have been pidly.  ADS was nearly a 20% stock jump, but BSG was a horrible low-premium buyout.
