News from Europe on the reluctance of banks to lend, coupled with an higher-than-expected yield on a French bond issue were not outweighed by encouraging employment news in the US. (NYSE: NOK) raised to ‘outperform’ at Credit Suisse; Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) cut to ‘hold’ at Benchmark; and VMWare Inc. (NYSE: VMW) started as ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ: DNDN) is up nearly 40% at $10.61. The biotech company reported a sales jump of 25% for its prostate cancer drug. The company is one of our top biotech picks for 2012.

Strong reports from the Chicago purchasing managers index and pending home sales juiced the equity markets this morning, and the gains held up throughout the day. Part of the bounce is due to a lowering of China’s capital reserves requirements on its banks and to a weaker dollar. Crude oil prices rose nearly 2% this morning, but the EIA report of a large inventory increase sent prices back down by mid-morning. WTI crude is trading at $100.27/barrel, after posting a high this morning of $101.75/barrel. Gold is up sharply, at $1,745.30, a rise of nearly 2%. The three major indexes have all been trading more than 3% higher for virtually the whole day.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly 489 points to 12,044.55 (4.23%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 105 points (4.17%) to 2,620.34, and the S&P 500 rose 4.33% or nearly 52 points to 1,246.94.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $46 price target at Argus. Other ratings actions included Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $94 price target at Canaccord Genuity; Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) cut to ‘underperform’ at Wedbush; Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) reiterated as ‘hold’ at Argus; Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus; and Calpine Corp. (NYSE: CPN) cut to ‘hold’ at Jefferies. See our story on Transocean’s stock offering and proposed debt offering.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO) is up 3.3%, at $13.87; The Fresh Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: TFM) is up 5.7%, at $38.73; Jos. A. Banks Clothiers, Inc. (NASDAQ: JOSB) is down -6%, at $48.09; and SeaDrill Ltd. (NYSE: SDRL) is up 6.3%, at $34.82. After markets close today, Aeropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO) and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (NYSE: KKD) will report earnings.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Zoltec Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) is up 41.5%, at $8.11. The advanced materials maker reported better-than-expected earnings after markets closed yesterday.

Advanced Analogics Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AATI) is up 32.5%, at $5.75. The power management chip maker is being acquired by Skyworks Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: SWKS) for $258.6 million, or about $6.05/share.

Patriot Coal Corp. (NYSE: PCX) is up 18.7%, at $10.30. This coal miner, like virtually all its competitors, is down about -40% for the past 12 months. There’s no news to justify today’s price jump, but the company’s thermal coal does sell well in cold weather.

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL) is up 20.3%, at $3.26. The rare earths miner made this big move on no news, but competitor Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP) did a deal with two Japanese companies to manufacture very powerful magnets in Japan for use in wind turbines and other high-tech products.

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) is up 16.6%, at $1.80. The solar PV maker is among several Chinese solar companies moving up today, no doubt as these are considered the most likely to survive a shakeout in the solar manufacturing sector.

Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFLY) is down -12%, at $27.02, after posting a new 52-week low of $26.93 earlier today. The social media company is facing intense competition for its on-line photo products.

Stay tuned for Thursday. Here’s a list of other noteworthy events scheduled for tomorrow(all times Eastern):

Most quarterly earnings are out already, but there are several due next week that could be interesting. The following companies are among those reporting earnings next week: Zoltek Companies Inc.

October is not usually a strong month for retailers because shoppers take a break between the back-to-school buying and the coming holiday season. In October 2010, same-store retail sales rose just 1.6% for a group of 23 retailers tracked by Thomson Reuters. This October, that increase is expected to rise to 4.5%. Syms Corp. (NYSE: SYMS), the discounter that owns Filene’s Basement, filed for bankruptcy protection yesterday, and won’t be participating in this year’s holiday extravaganza.

Some stores that will, though, are reporting October same-store sales today, including Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST), Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT), Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M), Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN), J.C. Penney Co. (NYSE: JCP), Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS), Limited Brands, Inc. (NYSE: LTD), American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NYSE: AEO), Zumiez Inc. (NASDAQ: ZUMZ), The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE: BKE), and Wet Seal Inc. (NASDAQ: WTSLA).

Costco reported an October same-store sales jump of 9%, and a total sales increase of 11%. For the first two months of its current quarter, Costco same-store sales have risen 10% and total sales are up 13%. In September, the company saw a same-store sales jump of 12%, indicating that October sales were, in fact, a bit slower. Analysts were expecting October sales to rise 9.2%.

Target’s same-store sales rose 3.3% in the month, nearly double the 1.7% increase the company posted in October 2010. That probably won’t be good enough, as analysts were expecting a rise of 4.2%.

Macy’s posted a 2.2% gain in October same-store sales, considerably below expectations of 3.6%. The company reports third-quarter earnings next week and said that it expects quarterly sales to rise 4%-4.5%, within its previous guidance.

Nordstrom posted a same-store sales gain in October of 5.4%, which did not meet analysts’ expectation of a 6.4% boost. The company reports third-quarter earnings next week, and is expected to post EPS of $0.58 on revenue of $2.36 billion.

J.C. Penney was expected to post a 1% gain in October same-store sales. Instead the company put up a -2.6% decline. Shares are down nearly -3% in the pre-market following the announcement.

Kohl’s reported a same-store sales jump of 3.9%, better than the expected 3.7%. The company also noted that it expected third-quarter EPS to be at the high end of previous guidance of $0./73-$0.79. The consensus analyst EPS estimate is $0.78.

Limited reported same-store sales up 6% in October, compared with an 11% rise in September. Analysts had been looking for a 6.2% rise in October sales. Despite the slight miss, the company raised its EPS guidance from $0.17-$0.22 to $0.22-$0-.24 for its third fiscal quarter, which ended in October. Limited reports third-quarter earnings on November 16th, and the consensus EPS estimate was $0.24, even before the company raised guidance.

American Eagle Outfitters reported third-quarter sales after markets closed yesterday. Same-store sales for the quarter rose 5%, compared with a rise of just 1% in the same period a year ago. Including the company’s online store, same-store sales rose 7% in the quarter. The company also narrowed its EPS guidance from a $0.22-$0.27 to $0.26-$0.27, well above the consensus estimate of $0.23. American Eagle will report third-quarter earnings on November 30th.

Zumiez reported same-store sales increased 3.3% in October and 6% for the quarter ended in October. For the month, analyst’s were expecting an increase of 2.8% in same-store sales. The company raised EPS guidance last month, and the consensus estimate is now $0.42.

The Buckle reported a same-store sales gain of 8.7% in October, and for the quarter, same-store sales are up 9.1%. The company smashed the Thomson Reuters estimate of a 6.3% October gain.

Wet Seal saw its sales in October drop -9.7%, distressingly far below the estimated drop of -1%. The company also lowered third-quarter EPS guidance from $0.05-$0.06 to $0.04. Shares are down more than -7% in the pre-market.

(NYSE: AEO); Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN); Fusion-io, Inc. (NYSE: FIO); Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN); MercadoLibre, Inc. (NASDAQ: MELI); NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI); QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM); RealD INc. (NYSE: RLD); ValueVision Media, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVTV); and Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM).

American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NYSE: AEO) lives and dies by guidance around same-store sales. Shares are surging on a report of third quarter sales rising 11% and the stock is up 6.5% at $14.15 in the after-hours session.

Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN) has changed its name to better reflect its stock ticker: “Do Not Do Not!”… shares closed down 1.7% at $10.46 but Provenge sales were only $66 million. Shares are down over 11.5% from the close at $9.25 in active trading.

Fusion-io, Inc. (NYSE: FIO) was up 6% already and the recent IPO beat estimates. Shares are up a sharp 12.6% more at $36.05 on more than 100,000 shares in the after-hours session.

Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN) was up ahead of earnings on the same hope of Intuitive Surgical. It didn’t happen… Third quarter total revenue was $5.4 million, up 53% year over year and 1% sequentially. Shares are down 17.2% to $2.60 in the after-hours.

MercadoLibre, Inc. (NASDAQ: MELI) is surging after closing up more than 1%. It reported that Q3 gross merchandise volume rose 51.8% to $1.3 billion, items sold rose 38.1% to 14.4 million; and revenue rose 45.9% to $81.6 million. This ADR is up 17% at $74.17 in active trading after the close.

NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI) reported that revenues were $85.6 million versus $121.2 million a year ago. Shares are down almost 16% at $10.10 on well over 100,000 shares in the after-hours.

QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) rose 4% to $52.18 ahead of earnings and beating earnings and bringing guidance is worth a gain of another 9.1% to $56.99 on highly active trading.

RealD Inc. (NYSE: RLD) showed a 35% revenue gain and was said to beat estimates but something awful must have been said in its conference call. Shares closed up 9.5% at $11.26 but the stock is now down 13.3% at $9.76 in the after-hours.

ValueVision Media, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVTV) reported Q3 estimates of sales growth of 2% to $135 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $0.5M to$0.7M; Shares closed up 7% at $3.27 but the stock is down almost 15% from the close at $2.79 on more than 27,000 shares.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM) was up ahead of earnings, but the company missed revenues. Raising the dividend and a 31% income pop just aren’t enough for a high-valued luxury grocery store. Shares are down 5% at $67.50 in active trading in the evening session. $ 66.22 4.34 6.15% 582,256

Gap (NYSE: GPS) took the coward’s way out. Buried among announcements about its global sales plans, it reported that “the company is committed to rebalancing its specialty and outlet stores within North America, resulting in about 700 Gap specialty stores and about 250 Gap Outlet stores by year end 2013. This represents a 34 percent decrease in the Gap specialty store fleet when compared to the end of 2007.” Said another way, Gap will shutter 200 stores on balance in the U.S. this year and next. The announcement opens the door to similar actions by struggling retailers as the holidays approach.

It is easier for companies to release bad news when one of their large competitors has. Retail firms can say that Gap had to cut stores because the entire industry has trouble. Holiday sales are expected to be weak this year, up less than 3%. Many American clothing manufacturers overbuilt when the economy was strong four to seven years ago. Gap will fire hundreds of people. Why should every other retail firm not do the same now that the sector faces a new set of issues?

Gap’s position is reflected in its share price, which is down more than 20% in the past two years. That is much worse than Macy’s (NYSE: M), Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) or even Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD), although none of these compete with Gap across all product lines. Other stores such as Aeropostale (NYSE: AOR) and American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) have fared worse in the stock market. Between them, the two have 2,00o stores and almost certainly too much capacity.

The 2011 holiday season is predicted to be one of mediocre sales. That will be true for many chains. The laggards like Gap, however, already know they are in trouble, and have decided to try to downsize their way out of the problem.

The top reports for the coming week are as follows: Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN); Corinthian Colleges Inc. (NASDAQ: COCO); H J Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ); Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL); Williams Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM); American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO); Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT); Guess Inc. (NYSE: GES); Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL); Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER); Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (NYSE: KKD); Omnivision Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI); and Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P).

We have compiled previews using Thomson Reuters estimates, shown price data on each and added color if applicable.

Monday, August 22

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) has estimates of $0.37 EPS and $162.7 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.43 EPS and $174 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $28.02 and the 52-week trading range is $17.71 to $37.58. So far, Focus has managed to avoid the China bashing trades because it is more established and investors believe that it is one of the real-deal companies. Valuations still remain high but that is because growth expectations remain here for the long-term.

Tuesday, August 23

Corinthian Colleges Inc. (NASDAQ: COCO) has estimates of $0.11 EPS and $427.6 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.15 EPS and $427.02 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $2.36 and the 52-week trading range is $2.315 (hit on Friday) to $7,35. Just another down and out education stock.

H J Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ) has estimates of $0.76 EPS and $2.78 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.85 EPS and $2.89 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $52.20 and the 52-week trading range is $45.52 to $55.00.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) has estimates of $0.47 EPS and $599.44 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.60 EPS and $644.43 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $13.75 and the 52-week trading range is $12.75 (hit Friday) to $31.89. What can the solar sector look forward to right now?

Williams Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM) has estimates of $0.36 EPS and $823.97 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.39 EPS and $861.24 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $28.90 and the 52-week trading range is $24.57 to $45.48. It has been impossible to not notice the sell-off here in this cyclical retailer that does less-good in had times and scores in boom-times. The stock has suffered handily since July when Goldman Sachs raised its ratings in a solid outlook call.
