Another Utility Misses Estimates (ETR, D, AEP, CHK)

power-lines-imageEntergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) joined the ranks of electricity generators that haven’t been able to reach consensus estimates for the first quarter of 2009.The company’s results resemble the earlier reports from Dominion Resources, Inc. (NYSE:D) and American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE:AEP), where lower demand, especially from industrial customers, really hurt sales.

AEP Doubling Renewable Energy Targets (AEP)

power-lines-image3American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) is increasing its push into renewable and alternative energy with a fairly lofty goal on the surface.  The utility with more than 5 million customers over 11 states is now doubling its goal of to now add 2,000 MW by the end of 2011.  This will bring the company’s total renewable energy portfolio to more than 2,600 MW by the end of 2011. AEP’s goal does come with regulatory support and is 1 of 12 new targets announced by the company.

“Greenwashing” is the act of misleading the public regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product, service, or business line.  Due to the public’s increased awareness of environmental issues, including global warming, deforestation, and the loss of endangered species, greenwashing has become a staple of corporations marketing efforts.  All of the companies in this article have made some effort to address these concerns.  Some of them appear to be trying harder than others, and even a few of them have made legitimate efforts to become responsible corporate stewards of the environment.  Evidenced by the support of environmental groups and corporate responsibility professionals, many of these companies’ green initiatives have made a positive impact. The Unemployment Crossroads

bear30Last month unemployment hit 8.1%. Of course, the figure was not uniform across the country. Seven states posted double-digit figures. But, in Wyoming, less than 4% of the population is out of work. The February number was based on 651,000 people being pushed out of their jobs during the month. With the March jobs report only a few days away, the debate is whether the rate at which the economy is causing people to lose work will stay on a 600,000 to 700,000 pace or whether the job loss is slowing and whether the US will avoid a nationwide unemployment rate of 10%. Beacon Power Gets a Grid Connection (BCON, AEP, NGG)

In a deal that is more valuable for demonstration purposes than for real income, Beacon Power Corporation (NASDAQ:BCON) will install a 1-megawatt flywheel-based frequency regulation facility at an American Electric Power Corporation, Inc.
