Palomar’s Chance To Take Away from BOTOX (PMTI, JNJ, AGN)

Money Stack ImagePalomar Medical Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: PMTI) is seeing shares surge to new heights not seen in 18-months.  The company is the first to receive FDA approval for over-the-counter clearance for a new, patented home use laser device that for the treatment of periorbital wrinkles (for eyes, like crows feet). The beauty of this, no pun intended, is that it is part of a Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) partnership and that may lead to much greater use.  This one will not exactly kill the entire Botox market for Allergan, Inc. (NYSE: AGN), but even for one such possible replacement the idea of a home-use laser has to be a bit more enticing than getting stuck with a needle full of Botulinum toxins.

Allergan May Join Sector Takeover Waves (AGN, GSK, DNA, PFE, WYE, MRK, SGP)

money-stack-image52If the rumor mill has any truth to it, then Allergan Inc. (NYSE: GSK) may by the next biotech takeover target.  There is roughly $150 billion in new equity investor capital that can be put to work in this space now that Genentech Inc. (NYSE: DNA) is being bought by Roche and that Pfizer Inc. (NYS: PFE) is buying Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) and that Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) is buying Schering-Plough (NYSE: intra-day trading trends for day traders and options volume at Volume Spike Investor.  And then there is the deeper down assumed valuation assessments using forward P/E’s and other balance sheet data at Biohealth Investor.

Allergan has now just crossed over the 10 million share mark and shares are up 11.7% at $48.23.  In today’s world of the market whip-around and the world of M&A, we won’t be shocked if Allergan denies the rumors saying they would rather be an acquirer.  Nor would we be shocked if the company halts or just says “No Comment!” in response to this.

Cramer’s Week of Shotgun Merger Proposals (RTP, AA, BHP, FCX, ITW, MTW, NKE, UA, PFE, AGN)

Cramer_imageJim Cramer came on CNBC’s MAD MONEY this week with several ideas for shotgun  marriage merger proposals he wanted to throw out there where he was calling for more mergers from the cash rich companies.

Cramer’s Friday evening picks may have gotten some interest last year or even earlier this year, but these involve two companies which have already had their fair share of merger issues and non-events this year on top of the commodity bubble bursting.  Cramer believes that Rio Tinto (NYSE: RTP) should buy Alcoa (NYSE: AA) before the antitrust powers are able to actually block mergers.  Cramer also thinks BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) should go buy Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) now that the forced selling has taken the stock down to $16.00 to take over the copper and minerals mining giant.

Cramer Calls For More Buyouts (JNJ, MNT, AGN, PFE, ITW, MTW, NKE, UA)

Cramer_imageOn tonight’s MAD MONEY on CNBC, Jim Cramer called for companies with high cash balances to make acquisitions while competitors are dirt cheap and vulnerable.  Yesterday, Cramer called for Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) to acquire Allergan (NYSE: AGN) now that Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) decided to take out Mentor Corp. (NYSE: MNT) for a huge premium.  We recently pondered whether that deal really made Allergan worth less money or more money over the competition.  Allergan has been battered as many "self improvements and enhancement surgeries" are being put off because the public is having a major money pinch.  Tonight, Cramer gave two more merger candidates and suitors.

52-Week Low Club (AGN, WTR, CTB, ISLE, LPSN, OPTT, SGIC, SNCR)

Today turned out being an ugly day, but there were many stocks that fell sharply to new 52-week lows all on their own without help from the market working against them.

Allergan Inc. (NYSE: AGN) hit a new low today despite showing earnings growth that beat expectations and announcing positive guidance. Shares were at $2.31 after hitting a low of $51.00 intraday. The 52-week range is $52.26 to $70.40. Apparently it takes more than good earnings to boost the health of this healthcare stock.

Aqua America Inc. (NYSE: WTR) missed earnings estimates and suffered adowngrade by Wachovia this morning.  So much for water being the safestinvestment around.  Shares are sitting at $17.42 in the final minutestoday; prior 52-week range of $17.75 to $26.62. This water companyprobably needs a different beverage tonight after today.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. (NYSE: CTB) needs a tire change after first quarter income reported this morning dropped. Shares are sitting at $12.72 in the final minutes today. The 52-week range wass $12.85 to $28.50.

Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLE) was down to $6.42 in the final minutes today. The 52-week range is $6.43 to $26.03. Who says the house always wins?

LivePerson Inc.’s (NASDAQ: LPSN) weak quarter one earnings and outlook is pushing this stock down to $2.51 compared to a 52-week range of $2.68 to $6.94.

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc (NASDAQ: OPTT) hitting yet another 52-week low today. Shares for this ocean wave renewable power generator are trading at about $8.25 in the final minutes today compared to a prior 52-week range of $8.56 to $19.75. So much for green always being the new gold.  This is actually a post-IPO low.

Silicon Graphics Inc. (NASDAQ: SGIC) dropped after third quarter losses widened. A contract with NASA to supply the next superconductor isn’t enough to pull this stock up. Shares are trading at $7.62 late in the day compared to a 52-week range of $8.00 to $29.73.

Synchronoss Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNCR) took a massive hit after they released guidance that the company is concerned with revenues by Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone. Tuesday, the company reported a 17% profit growth at $0.16 EPS on $29.1 million in revenues, meeting estimates; but guidance stank the place up.  Shares were down over 43% to $12.92 in late-day trading on extremely high relative trading volume. The 52-week range was $15.15 to $48.03.

As Fidelity Re-Opens Magellan Fund, Investors Review Top Holdings (FMAGX, NOK, GLW, GOOG, SLB, CNQ, SPLS, T, AGN, MON)

It’s official.  Fidelity’s Magellan Fund (FMAGX) is being re-opened for new investors.  This fund at one point in 1997 became so large that the fund closed itself to new funds and outside investment commitments.  As of the last seen date Fidelity’s Magellan Fund had some $43.3+ Billion in assets under management.

  • Fidelity says that as the investor base is now 10 years older, they have had adequate redemptions and portfolio manager Harry Lang says: "We believe that the time is right to make Magellan available to a new generation of investors………… We believe that generating new sales to offset future redemptions will help stabilize the fund’s cash flows and assist Harry in most effectively directing investment strategies for the benefit of fund shareholders. It’s effectively the inverse of the reason why we limited new purchases of the fund 10 years ago. At that time, we were seeing strengthening cash inflows, and we expected that trend to continue."
  • More importantly, Harry Lang also noted, "I’ve been fortunate to find great stocks here in the U.S. and abroad to include in the portfolio. If we’re able to achieve a better balance of cash flows in the fund going forward, I’ll regularly have the cash on hand to capitalize on attractive investment opportunities as I find them."

Fidelity noted that some 85% of the funds assets are deemed for retirement (IRA, 401K etc.), and therefore the fund would seem to take more of a longer-term view.  The top 10 Holdings are unfortunately as of September 30, 2007, so we’ll have another two weeks or so before we know what the real holdings are:  The TOP 10 as of then are as follows:

  • Nokia (NOK, Corning (GLW), Google (GOOG), Schlumberger (SLB), Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ), Staples (SPLS), AT&T (T), Allergan (AGN), Monsanto (MON), Renewable Energy Corp. AS (overseas).  This list was posted on December 30, 2007, so it might be more updated than some of the aggregator financial news and data web sites that take time to update.

If you want to see the full holdings the list on their site is here.  With more than $43 Billion in assets this could create quite a lot of buying in stock names where Fidelity wants to put capital to work.  We would surmize that the fund might not add as much to some of its key holdings if it can put capital to work in some of the names it owns less of that might like to own more of.

Also be advised that the full holdings list is 45 days old and we know for certain that many of the positions and many of the weightings have already changed from November 30, 2007.  We’d actually start screening out some of the smaller holdings off of that master list to see which are attractive in growth and/or value that will still do well in a slowing economy or even a recession.  If you were opening a decade-long closed fund, you might be tempted to disperse more of the new inflows into other names that might be under-owned or under-weighted in the fund.

Backward & Forward, Cramer In 2007 To 2008

2007 was one volatile year and for now it appears that will be the norm for at least the start of 2008.  Everyone’s favorite market pundit or least liked pundit is obviously Jim Cramer.  If you love Cramer or can’t stand him it really doesn’t matter.  He signed a new multi-year deal with CNBC recently.  Here are some of his major calls this year that will still be referred to in 2008:

Here were Cramer’s TOP 9 STOCKS FOR 2007, with a call broken down for each one.  Borat would say HI FIVE on some and NOT SO NICE on others, as would be expected.  Cramer’s 14,582 year-end DJIA target…..Friday’s close was 13,365.87……although we did hit 14,279.96 on OCT11, 2007.  Cramer also gave a batch of price targets on most of theDJIA components:

Cramer’s Stock Picks FOR 5-YEARS OUT:

SOME LISTS: His list of recession proof stocks compared to ours.  We are updating our
Defensive Stocks For The First Half Of 2008" currently.  Cramer gave a huge list of companies he expects to benefit from the alternative energy traders (SGR, FWLT, BWA, OMG, FSLR, FTEK, WFR, TTEK, ZOLT, BP, SPWR, CY, CPST, ITRI)… Jim Cramer pondered which US companies China would want to acquire, about 3 months before sovereign funds started buying into US companies.  Cramer’s mortgage winners and losers…… Here were his MAJOR BULL MARKET STOCK PICKS(MHS, CVS, AGN, CELG, GENZ, CEPH, RIG, HAL, EMR, CAT, CMI, UTX, KO,PEP, CL, GS, SKS, VFC, UNP, CSX, BA), some of which are DJIAcomponents.  Cramer produced a "MUST OWN" list of stocks, many of whichare up significantly and some are down (WHR, BDK, ATI, BGC, HON, ASD, JCI, MDR, FWLT, CAT, TEX, DE, QCOM)

Cramer spent lots of time on International stocks that most US investors might not cover on their own.  He made a big call on Mercadolibre (MELI) (also BIDU, GOOG) with some emphasis on buying immediately, right before it made a huge run up.  Cramer’s Hidden Video Game Investment Perfect World (PWRD, ATVI, ERTS, VIA) was one he said could run more than 50% for 2008.  Cramer made 5 TOP CHINESE PICKS (CEO, CHL, SSW, FMCN, BIDU, GMR).  We’ll see in 2008 if any of his Canadian OIL TRUSTS get acquired in 2008 (BTE, CNE, PGH, PVX, PWE, AAV, GDI).  Cramer also went over his top picks from Europe for American investors (TOT, SI, ABB, PHG, BF)

ON TECHNOLOGY:  Cramer’s NEW HORSEMEN OF TECH…. will the list change in 2008???  Did Cramer Say $1,000.00 on Google, Or Is It $600.00? That was in May 2007.  Cramer Gave Monster Price targets to Baidu.com (BIDU, GOOG).. will these targets change in 2008? Cramer was very positive on all the GPS stocks, although we’d expect that Cramer will change his tune in 2008 now thatthe holiday madness is behind us (GRMN, UA, CROX, NVT, TRMB, SIRF).

Would it be fair not to include the Barron’s attack on Cramer from summer for those of you that criticize his every word?

ON WARREN BUFFETT…. Cramer noted that BROOKFIELD ASSET MANAGEMENT in Canada may be the next Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK/A) NYSE: BAM). Cramer reviewed 10 Warren Buffett stocks for analysis and then reviewed 10 More Warren Buffett stocks:

Will his buyout of ALCOA (AA) prediction come true in 2008??? Cramer gave a list of stocks that had bought back so much stock that they might be taking themselves private.

Join our free email distribution list for other Cramer calls or for updates we send out regarding IPO’s, spin-offs, restructuring, reorganization, activist investors and more.
