Oil has fallen off the proverbial cliff into the roll date and as the concerns that the eurozone’s weakness is going to spread enough to really hurt the recovery of the global oil demand. And then there is the de-risk trade taking place where traders and investors are taking money out of riskier assets. The true losers in this move are alternative energy stocks, and that is double the case if you are of the same mind that alternative energy stocks may represent nothing more than leveraged bets on the price of oil and fossil fuels.

Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) at $6.38 is down 4.35%, and the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSE: PBW) is down 4.56% at $8.44. Many of the component companies in these ETFs and some of the other alternative energy stocks we follow in our own universe of stocks in the sector are down well over 5%. We wanted to take a look at ten of the biggest losers in our alternative energy universe:

LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK) is down 5.10% at $5.58.

Evergreen Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: ESLR) is down 5.66% at $0.91.

JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. is down 5.5% at $4.84.

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is down 3.67% at $11.56.

Akeena Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKNS) is down 8.25% at $0.89.

Hoku Corporation (NASDAQ: HOKU) is down 5.41% at $2.80.

Zoltek Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) is down 7.8% at $9.68.

FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: FCEL) is down 9.87% at $2.10.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) is down 10.3% at $1.04.

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) is giving back some as well with shares down a surprising 6.8% at $28.78.

This is not always the case, but generally the riskier the alternative energy company the more the company has to lose in general with fossil fuels getting cheaper and cheaper. The more solid players tend to have more and more orders in place where at least the existing orders already on the books are deemed less at-risk.

The odd thing is that some of these moves are on somewhat weak volume, so some is just a buyer’s strike while each is trying to find equilibrium (if that really exists). Still, throw in European woes (large alternative energy clients) and a growing sense that there is a higher chance that the contagion will make economic recovery much less than expected and you have a ballgame.

(NASDAQ: AKNS), Ambac Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: ABK), American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CTIC), Fidelity National Information Services (NYSE: FIS), Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT). The news and the moves are listed below with color on each where applicable.

Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) is up even though the apparel retailer said its loss narrowed in Q1 as sales improved. The apparel retailer loss was wider than analysts expected. Shares are up 2.3% at $41.74 on thin trading volume.

Akeena Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKNS) is soaring after announcing that it has partnered with Westinghouse to Create Westinghouse Solar. Shares are up a whopping 50% at $1.40 on over 500,000 shares. The 52-week range is $0.89 to $1.98.

Ambac Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: ABK) had a disappointing earnings report. The company said its first quarter loss rose to $690.1 million, up from a loss of $392.2 million a year ago. Ambac shares were up big from lows this year. Shares were down 7% at $1.36 on over 1 million shares so far this morning.

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) is trading up on thin volume this morning. The AIA sale for Asian operations appears to be on after the Prudential plc rights offering news yesterday. Shares are up 1.4% at $39.55 on over 10,000 shares in the pre-market.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CTIC) is up… The news from the company is that Pixantrone was associated with up to a 4-fold reduction in severe cardiac toxicity when compared to Doxorubicin in a CHOP-R regimen. Shares are up 9.7% at $0.51, although this one has been so volatile in the past that a 9% move may feel like a normal day at the office.

Fidelity National Information Services (NYSE: FIS) is trading down after its private equity deal blew apart. The company wanted more than the bid and Blackstone has reportedly backed away. Shares are down almost 6% at $27.20 on about 600,000 shares this morning.

Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD) is after a disappointing Lowe’s report yesterday. Earnings were up 41% but rather than lowering guidance it raised its 2010 guidance. Shares are up 1% at $35.91 on over 50,000 shares.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) is down after Best Buy’s online video service is set to debut. Shares are down 2% at $104.21 on almost 25,000 shares this morning.

Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD) in China said that it made $0.17 adjusted EPS versus a loss last year. Shares closed at $8.18 yesterday and shares are trading up almost 20% at $9.80 on about 230,000 shares.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is rare to have as a pre-market most active but it is active after earnings were mixed. Earnings were $0.88 EPS, up from $0.77 EPS a year ago and up from $0.85 EPS expected from Thomson Reuters. While guidance is mixed, shares are indicated up marginally. Shares are up 1% at $53.25 on almost 300,000 shares.

Delete ABRAXAS PETROLEUM CORP. (AXAS)
Delete AKEENA SOLAR INC. (AKNS)
Delete AMERICAN OIL & GAS INC. (AEZ)
Delete BMB MUNAI INC. (KAZ)
Delete CALLON PETROLEUM (CPE)
Delete CANO PETROLEUM INC. (CFW)
Delete CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP. (CPST)
Delete DOUBLE EAGLE PETROLEUM (DBLE)
Delete ENERGY XXI (BERMUDA) LTD. (EXXI)
Delete FLOTEK INDS INC. (FTK)
Delete GEOGLOBAL RESOURCES INC. (GGR)
Delete GEOMET INC. (GMET)
Delete GREENHUNTER ENERGY INC. (GRH)
Delete MERIDIAN RESOURCE CORP. (TMR)
Delete MITCHAM INDUSTRIES INC. (MIND)
Delete NATIONAL COAL CORP (NCOC)
Delete PACIFIC ETHANOL INC. (PEIX)
Delete QUEST RESOURCE CORP. (QRCP)
Delete RAM ENERGY RESOURCES INC (RAME)
Delete TRI-VALLEY CORP (TIV)
Delete TRICO MARINE SERVICES (TRMA)

There will be updates to this list today and next Friday with the final decision list posted on Monday, June 29. Of course, that means that some of these deletions might not get deleted in the final list. A couple were tied to alternative energy in our minds, but were listed by Russell as ‘consumer’ or ‘producer durables’ rather than in the broad “energy” group.

Speakers from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE:STP), and Q-Cells as well as industry analysts will discuss what is on the horizon for the solar industry. Other companies which are listed at the conference’s site here are Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT), Akeena Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKNS), and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL).

But the horizon may be closer than the participants think. The global economic slowdown has severely cut into solar industry growth, and the survival or profitability of the industry may be a more important topic for discussion than the size of the industry in 2013.

The near- and medium-term profitability of the PV solar sector may not attract as many conference attendees as futuristic discussions of solar domination, but the day may come when government subsidies for solar won’t cover the losses. Maybe the conference ought to spend a few minutes on what happens then.

The overall short interest on NASDAQ stocks was actually pretty dull from the end of April to Mid-May, or at least that is the case until you go straight into looking at solar stocks and other alternative energy stocks. Many of these have seen their stock prices rise sharply over the last few months. Many were viable with $70 or $80 oil, but after $100 and then $130 oil you can imagine that short sellers are targeting the most up or most speculative names.
                                                         MAY 15 APRIL 30 CHANGE
Akeena Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKNS) 3,280,165 3,042,025 7.83%
Ascent Solar Tech (NASDAQ: ASTI) 2,106,784 1,889,624 11.49%
Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) 4,311,126 3,562,672 21.01%
Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST) 12,860,110 11,491,389 11.91%
Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ: ESLR) 22,122,144 20,622,446 7.27%
Fuel Tech, Inc. (NASDAQ: FTEK) 7,488,443 6,443,583 16.22%
Otter Tail Corp. (NASDAQ: OTTR) 2,126,732 1,960,651 8.47%
SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) 15,231,873 14,016,469 8.67%

As you have seen, most of these are solar plays, but some aren’t. Fuel Tech helps power plants burn cleaner coal, and it has had more problems over the last year on making its earnings numbers. Otter Tail is a diversified "General Eclectic" but it has become more well known for making wind towers of late; and it hasn’t hurt that Bill Gates has been a holder for quite some time. Capstone Turbine has been our largest winner in our weekly "10 Stocks Under $10" newsletter in the sector with a 200% gain; and it is still an active hold in that group. We also just featured Akeena Solar over at VSinvestor.com for a highly unusual volume spike alert.

These are the ones we screened with the largest short interest increases in the sector seem to be more speculative names, although there were some that saw decreases and we excluded those from this list. Out of the alternative energy or "cleaner" energy stocks we follow, these were the ones with the largest increase in the short interest.

You can join our open email distribution list to hear about other issues in short interest, secondary offerings, IPO’s, private equity, special financings.

Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ) issued and sold $75 million in 6.0% Convertible Senior Notes due 2017 in a private placement on December 10, 2007, and in a filing today investors were given the right to resell their notes and/or converted shares. This one also reports earnings on Wednesday of this week.

We’d note that Fuel Tech (NASDAQ: FTEK) is soon to report earnings, this weekend we issued a full earnings preview. Also, we’ll see earnings out of Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) on Tuesday.

Cnet News ran a great piece today showing how the American Council on Renewable Energy organized the press conference for Tuesday to publicly lobby for extended tax breaks and credits for renewable energy firms beyond 2008. Well-known energy investors and business people from General Electric (NYSE: GE), Credit Suisse (NYSE: CS), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and others are said to be involved.

SCHOTT AG of Germany broke ground today on a $100 million initial investment for a 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico for its SCHOTT Solar, Inc. unit.

A boutique research firm called Global Hunter initiated coverage of Solar Power (OTCBB: SOPW) and Akkena Solar (NASDAQ: AKNS) with a neutral rating on each. In another call, Zacks.com showed an interview with one of its analysts talking up JA Solar (NASDAQ: JASO) and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ), as well as Energy Conversion Devices (NASDAQ: ENER). That can be seen at Zacks.com

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ:CPST) announced that RSP Systems completed installations of New York’s first microturbines in four location under the City’s new rule for residential and commercial use. This stock is up roughly 50% since we added this one to our "10 Stocks Under $10" newsletter, and we haven’t yet taken our foot off the gas…. nor off the turbine.

As a reminder, whether you prefer the term "Global Warming" or "Climate Change" is not the issue as far as 247WallSt.com covers it. Green business has become big business, and this affects many public companies today.
