“Cash Burn Rate,” used to value companies with little or no revenues, was a popular term in the dot-com era. The burn rate is the amount of cash that is being used up over time. From this, analysts would calculate the period until a business would run out of cash, assuming the current operating costs continues.

Read American Companies Running Out of Cash

Running a business just with cash on hand cannot continue forever if at some point losses cannot be turned into profits. Eventually, cash must flow into a business at a greater rate than it leaves or the business will face extinction. That is even true if a company sells assets, which will eventually run out, too.

In the early stages of the Internet, revenue generation was a key problem as many websites did not have a tangible product, let alone profits, to support the multi-million or billion dollar valuations. Many of these companies indeed ended up in the graveyard when the cash ran out and the dot-com bubble burst.

Fast forward a few years and Wall Street once again faced a similar situation. The recession, which officially started in 2007, has placed financial strains on many businesses. When revenue declines are not met with the same reduction in spending, they can lead to negative cash flow. Companies can take short-term measures to handle cash flow problems until conditions improve through borrowing or equity issues. However, poor market conditions make it harder for troubled companies to borrow. Businesses, even large ones such as Eastman Kodak and American Air parent AMR, without the capital to make it through an extended stretch of weakened economic conditions, have fallen into bankruptcy.

With that in mind, we wanted to see which companies today are burning through cash at a rate that should concern shareholders.

Capital IQ provided 24/7 Wall St. with a list of 38 non-financial companies that had a negative burn rate. That is, cash from operations in the latest 12 months was negative at these companies. Capital IQ calculated the monthly burn rate by dividing this annual number by 12. Next, the number of months before cash runs out was calculated by dividing the cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments by the monthly burn rate. We took a closer look at each company to find out if the numbers were misleading or if the company could indeed be facing serious liquidity problems.

Here are the seven companies that would run out of cash during the next 18 months based on their last 12-month burn rate.

All three major US stock indexes opened higher this morning, and spent the rest of the day bouncing around the neutral line. The reports from retailers on same-store sales in January were mixed, but overall sales failed to meet expectations. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke testified in Congress today, but did not really give the market much of a push one way or the other. The IPO filing from Facebook after markets closed last night pushed some social media stocks up on a halo effect. WTI crude oil is down 1% at $96.63/barrel and Brent crude is up 0.78% at $112.43/barrel. Gold closed up 0.67% at $1,761.30/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 11 points to 12,705.41 (-0.09%), the NASDAQ rose more than 11 points (0.4%) to 2,859.68, and the S&P 500 rose 0.11% or nearly 1.5 points to 1,325.54.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) raised to ‘overweight’ at JPMorgan; Edwards Lifesciences Corp. (NYSE: EW) cut to ‘neutral’ at Credit Suisse; AK Steel Holding Corp. (NYSE: AKS) cut to ‘underperform’ at BofA/Merrill Lynch; Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) cut to ‘neutral’ at BofA/Merrill Lynch; and Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) started as ‘buy’ at Canaccord Genuity.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) is up nearly 24% at $66.30; Education Management Corp. (NASDAQ: EDMC) is down -17% at $21.19; Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) is down -0.6% at $24.62; Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) is up 2.2% at $60.88 after posting a new 52-week high of $61.93 earlier today; Beazer Homes USA Inc. (NYSE: BZH) is up 3.2% at $3.27; Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE: BSX) is down -3.9% at $5.85; Brinks Co. (NYSE: BCO) is down -17.5% at $24.43; Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. (NYSE: DO) is up 0.35% at $63.29; Lear Corp. (NYSE: LEA) is down -1.2% at $42.48; Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) is down -0.3% at $38.51; Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) is down -0.3% at $15.71; and Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) is down -0.9% at $46.53.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) is up nearly 18% at $12.49 after posting a new post-IPO high of $12.91 earlier today. The social games company got a big boost from Facebook’s IPO filing. Our coverage is here.

MediciNova Inc. (NASDAQ: MNOV) is up nearly 31% at $2.47. The company received a favorable patent notice for a multiple sclerosis treatment device.

Response Genetics Inc. (NASDAQ: RGDX) is up more than 27% at $1.50. The drug maker announced the private placement of about 5.3 million shares at $1.50/share, about 28% higher than last night’s closing price.

BioScrip Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOS) is up more than 15% at $6.73. The pharmacy services provider has sold a portion of its assets to Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG) for $225 million.

Ur-Energy Inc. (AMEX: URG) is down more than -13% at $1.22. The uranium miner has issued 1.5 million shares of new stock to agents who will attempt to sell at CDN$1.00.

US coal miner Patriot Coal Corp. (NYSE: PCX) said this morning that it was closing three of its contractor-operated coal mines and two production units in West Virginia “in response to weaker market demand for metallurgical coal.” The announcement has pushed shares down about -10%. Met coal miners Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: ANR) and James River Coal Corp. (NASDAQ: JRCC) are also getting hit, as are steel makers Arcelor Mittal (NYSE: MT), US Steel Corp. (NYSE: X), and AK Steel Holding Corp. (NYSE: AKS), which use metallurgical coal to make steel.

Patriot Coal officials said demand for met coal has weakened in the last few weeks, especially export demand. Demand from China, the world’s largest importer of met coal, is expected to remain weak through the first half of the year, although demand is expected to rise in the second half as Chinese and European economies begin to grow again. Total consumption of met coal could fall by 13 million metric tons in 2012.

In the late morning, Patriot Coal shares are down more than -9% at $8.18 in a 52-week range of $6.92-$29.20.

Shares in Alpha are down nearly -8% at $20.76 in a 52-week range of $15.49-$62.65.

James River shares are down more than -8% at $6.77 in a 52-week range of $5.41-$25.59.

Steel maker Arcelor Mittal is down nearly -2%, while US Steel and AK Steel are both down about -3%.

(NASDAQ: SCHN) is set to report earnings on January 9, 2012, but the company has already telegraphed that the results will be a stinker. It has lowered guidance “to reflect the impact of significant market volatility during the quarter… due to weaker than anticipated global market conditions for recycled metals.”

Operating margins contracted more than anticipated during the quarter and earnings are expected to be in the range of $0.18 to $0.25 EPS for its fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Thomson Reuters had estimates at $0.55 EPS. The company further cited higher fears of a global recession, mostly from the European debt crisis, being responsible for a significant buying pattern slowdown as well as a sharp decline in sales prices.

Operating income in the Metals Recycling Business per ferrous ton is expected to be approximately 50% lower than the $21 per ton seen during the first quarter of 2011, while the Auto Parts Business is going to see operating income about 30% lower.

The only good news is that Schnitzer did note, “Sales prices began to strengthen towards the end of the quarter, but the improvements are not expected to benefit results until later in the second quarter.”

Schnitzer had already lost more than one-third of its value from the 2011 high. Now shares are down almost 6% at $43.10 versus a 52-week range of $37.00 to $69.43.

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) is actually up almost 1% at $26.11 and AK Steel Holding Corporation (NYSE: AKS) is up 1.7% at $7.65 in early trading.

Shares opened lower this morning on continuing concern about European bank debt. The Case-Shiller report on housing contributed to the weakness and then the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index came it at its lowest reading in three years. Shares of Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) continue to fall and First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) fired its CEO. Crude oil prices rose almost $2/barrel, and gold rose more than 3%, to top $1,700/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 205 points at 11,707.91 (-1.73%), the NASDAQ fell more than61 points (-2.26%) to 2,638.42, and the S&P 500 fell -2% or more than 25 points to 1,229.06.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including a drop of AT&T (NYSE: T) to ‘market perform’ at Bernstein. Forest Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: FRX) was cut to ‘hold’ at Argus and Healthways Inc. (NASDAQ: HWAY) downgraded at 3 firms. Stocks getting a boost today included JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) raised to ‘overweight’ at Piper Jaffray, Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) raised to ‘neutral’ at Citigroup, and Lowe’s Companies (NYSE: LOW) raised to ‘buy’ at Janney.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Netflix is down nearly -35%, at $77.30; 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) fell more than -5.5%, to $77.45; AK Steel Holding Corp. (NYSE: AKS) fell more than 13% to $7.52; ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) up about 1%, at $27.98; Ceradyne Inc. (NASDAQ: CRDN) up nearly 10%, at $33.48; and Sherwin-Williams Co. (NYSE: SHW) up about 2.5%, at $83.62.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

First Solar dropped more than -25%, to $43.40, a new 52-week low. The company has fired its CEO after the shares have been pummeled on falling prices for solar PV panels. The stock’s 52-week high is $175.45, and that may be in the rear-view mirror forever.

Healthways is down more than -43%, at $6.31, after posting a new 52-week low of $6.22 earlier. CIGNA Corp. (NYSE: CI) will be cutting its contract work with Healthways following Cigna’s announced acquisition of HealthSpring.

Interactive Intelligence Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ININ) dropped more than -24%, to $25.66. The company was downgraded by two analyst firms. The company reported soft earnings this morning.

SMTC Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTX) is up more than 45%, to $2.11. The circuit board maker raised fourth quarter and fiscal year 2012 guidance.

Unisys Corp. (NYSE: UIS) is up more than 32%, at $26.54. Earnings beat expectations as foreign sales appear to be more than making up for weak federal government sales in the US.

Stay tuned for Wednesday. We have the following events noted:

7:30 a.m. — Mortgage Bankers Association mortgage purchase applications

8:30 a.m. — Durable Goods orders

10:00 a.m. — New home sales

10:30 a.m. — EIA Petroleum status report
