A downward revision to third-quarter GDP did not hold down early trading this morning as markets got off to a good start and remained in positive territory throughout the day. A rise in consumer confidence and in leading economic indicators likely solidified the gains. Trading volume was light again today in the run-up to the holiday weekend. WTI crude traded at $99.46/barrel and Brent traded at $107.73. Gold continues to slide, down -$5.80, at $1,607.80/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 63 points to 12,170.86 (0.52%), the NASDAQ rose more than 21 points (0.83%) to 2,599.45, and the S&P 500 rose 0.83% or more than 10 points to 1,254.07.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT) raised from ‘sector perform’ to ‘outperform’ at RBC Capital Markets. Other ratings actions today include Agrium Corp. (NYSE: AGU) cut from ‘outperform’ to ‘sector perform’ at RBC Capital Markets; Saks Inc. (NYSE: SKS) cut from ‘outperform’ to ‘neutral’ at Zack’s; Vivus Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) cut from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ at Roth Capital and maintained ‘outperform’ at Credit Suisse; and Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) maintained as ‘buy’ with an $11 target price at Sterne Agee and maintained as ‘outperform’ at Credit Suisse.

Here are some of last night’s and today’s post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Micron Technology is up nearly 18% at $6.54; American Greetings Inc. (NYSE: AM) is down more than -21% at $13.37, after posting a new 52-week low of $12.85 earlier in the day; CPI Corp. (NYSE: CPY) is down more than -62% at $2.00, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.96 earlier in the day; Neogen Corp. (NASDAQ: NEOG) is down nearly -3% at $31.15; Tibco Software Inc. (NASDAQ: TIBX) is up nearly 8% at $23.74; and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY) is down more than -6% at $57.70.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

RAM Energy Resources Inc. (NASDAQ: RAM) is up nearly 71% at $1.88. The independent oil & gas company has today relisted on the NASDAQ and has also announced a $550 million investment from a private equity firm headed by the former chairman and CEO of Petrohawk.

WCA Waste Corp. (NASDAQ: WCAA) is up nearly 31% at $6.43, after posting a new 52-week high of $6.44 earlier. The non-hazardous waste processor has approved a cash buyout offer for $526 million ($6.50/share) from a private investment fund.

ARCA biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ: ABIO) is down more than -24% at $1.02, after posting a new 52-week low of $0.97 earlier today. The biopharmaceutical firm announced a private placement of $1.75 million in stock and warrants.

PHH Corp. (NYSE: PHH) is down more than -15% at $11.01 after posting a new 52-week low of $8.75 earlier today. The mortgage servicer’s credit ratings were cut at S&P to ‘BB-’ on concern that the company would not be able to make a $423 million debt repayment scheduled for March 2013 out the its free cash flow.

Vivus Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) is down more than -16% at $8.72 after posting a new 52-week low of $8.60 earlier. The biopharmaceutical firm announced that its weight-loss drug Qnexa led to a higher rate of birth defects in children whose mothers were taking the drug during pregnancy.

Other calls may be relevant well into the future, and some calls turn out to be total duds that were very painful for the analysts who made them (and the traders that listened). After reviewing and filtering all of these research reports, we end up with the top analyst calls of the week.

This weeks top analyst calls were in the following stocks: Avon Products Inc. (NYSE: AVP); Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY); First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR); Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE: KND); Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX); Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT); RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH); Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ: RGLD); Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI); Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S); Tellabs Inc. (NASDAQ: TLAB); and Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM).

We have a runner up call in Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) and we also have a highlight on Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU) despite some valuation concerns.

We have compiled the ratings news and relevant data around the reaction to each or around the implications on each. Color has also been provided if relevant on the name.

Avon Products Inc. (NYSE: AVP) had an awful post-earnings week due to a drop and due to an SEC investigation. On Friday came news that Citigroup was reiterating a “Buy” rating as the worst is likely price in. The problem is that Citi highlighted more negative than positive and it cut the target to $22 from $29 in the call. Around $19.00, that is not really enough upside even if the stock is now getting “cheap.” Avon was cut to “Neutral” by UBS on Friday.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY) rarely pulls back very much, Shares were down over 3% on Friday because Morgan Stanley initiated coverage with a quite boring “Underweight” rating. Interesting considering that its client base never spends like there is a recession. On Wednesday Bed Bath & Beyond was reiterated at “Buy” and the target was raised to $70 at Argus.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) may have taken more downgrades after its CEO firing/resignation SNAFU, but at least one analyst is defending the position. Argus came out and lowered the price target to $90.00 but the firm is maintaining its “BUy” rating. This one has gotten so ugly that perhaps there is some value. We just hate trying to think about former high-flying stocks as “value” because it means things went really bad. Interestingly enough, shares bounced more than 20% from the lows of the week.

Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE: KND) may have been beaten up too much during the malaise around healthcare reimbursement rates. We would caution that earnings are due this coming Thursday (NOV 3). In July this was above $20.00 then the reimbursement rate woes came on at the time as a bad sell-off. Zacks has finally said enough is enough and named it the Value Stock of the Day this last Thursday as the research shop sees this trading well under ten-times next year’s earnings estimates.

Markets opened higher this morning on renewed hope for a deal on Europe’s debt debacle. At a meeting of EU leaders, the group approved a 9% capital buffer to go into effect by June 2012. That’s a start, but hardly the end of the long-running disagreement on how the continent should deal with its banking problems. Stocks got a boost from solid earnings from Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) and Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW). Oil prices have dropped more than $2.50/barrel following the weekly EIA report that US crude inventories increased by 4.7 million barrels. New home sales were also up for the first time in five months, following price cuts averaging 3.1%.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly more than 162 points to 11,869.04 (1.39%), the NASDAQ rose more than 12 points (0.46%) to 2.650.67, and the S&P 500 rose 1.05% or nearly 13 points to 1,241.97.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including target price and estimate cuts on Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) at BofA/ML, but the firm maintained its ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY) was maintained at ‘buy’ with a raised target price of $70 at Argus; First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) was cut to ‘hold’ at both Kaufman and Jefferies, and cut to ‘sell’ at S&P Capital IQ; 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) was lowered to ‘market perform’ at William Blair; and The New York Times Co. (NYSE: NYT) was cut to ‘neutral’ by Citigroup.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Boeing is up more than 5% at $66.91; Corning is up 3.6% at $14.22; American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE: AEP) is up 0.67%, at $38.91; ConocoPhillips Corp. (NYSE: COP) is up nearly 2%, at $72.03; Exelon Corp. (NYSE: EXC) is up 1%, at $42.75; and Complete Production Services, Inc. (NYSE: CPX) is up slightly, at $31.06, after trading lower for most of the day.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG) is up about 70%, to $10.41. The company signed a 20-year agreement with BG Group plc to sell the British company 3.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually. The deal is worth about $8 billion, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2015.

First Financial Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFCH) is up more than 24%, at $6.76. The company has sold $198 million of some performing loans and other classified assets.

Rentech, Inc. (AMEX: RTK) is up more than 25%, to $1.51. The company successfully launched an IPO today of Rentech Nitrogen Partners, L.P. (NYSE: RNF) at an offering price of $15-$19/share. RTK owns about 61% of RNF and all of the general partner interests in the new company.

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: HGSI) is down about -21%, at $10.05, after posting anew 52-week low of $9.68 earlier in the day. The company reported weak earnings today, and its lupus drug failed to meet already low sales expectations.

DeVry Inc. (NYSE: DV) is down-17%, at $38.36. The company’s earnings failed to meet analysts’ estimates and enrollment also declined in its undergraduate degree programs.

Radioshack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) is down nearly -12%, at $11.80. The company missed earnings expectations as it transitions from being a T-Mobile reseller to a Verizon Wireless reseller.

Stay tuned for Thursday. We have noted the following events (all times Eastern):

8:30 a.m. – Third quarter GDP report
8:30 a.m. – Unemployment claims
(NASDAQ: ADBE); Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL); ConAgra Foods Inc. (NYSE: CAG); Jefferies Group Inc. (NYSE: JEF); Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL); Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY); General Mills Inc. (NYSE: GIS); Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT); CarMax Inc. (NYSE: KMX); Discover Financial Services (NYSE: DFS); FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX); Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE); and Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD).

We have broken these out by day and included consensus earnings and revenue estimates from Thomson Reuters. We have also added in a price and recent trading activity and even added in the consensus analyst price targets. Many of these also have some added color for traders to consider about the earnings reports.

Monday

Lennar Corporation (NYSE: LEN) has estimates of $0.10 EPS and $810.2 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.19 EPS and $908.35 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $13.90, the 52-week trading range is $12.39 to $21.54. Wait a minute… EARNINGS rather than losses? Go figure.

Tuesday

Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE) has estimates of $0.54 EPS and $1.03 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.59 EPS and $1.07 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $25.50, the 52-week trading range is $22.67 to $35.99. Analysts still have a consensus target above $34.00, which seems a bit optimistic in the new normal where Apple’s mobility service is still crimping Flash.

Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) will show the cruise industry who is boss, maybe. The estimates are $1.63 EPS and $4.91 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.36 EPS and $3.89 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $33.50, the 52-week trading range is $28.96 to $48.14. Keep in mind that this report is the King-Maker quarter that dictates the earnings for the full year due to the summer travel months. With an estimate of $1.63 EPS for the quarter, the full year is expected to be $2.46 EPS. Analysts have a consensus target of $almost $44.75.

ConAgra Foods Inc. (NYSE: CAG) has estimates of $0.31 EPS and $2.96 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.46 EPS and $3.3 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $24.00, the 52-week trading range is $21.02 to $26.60, and the consensus analyst target is $28.13.

Jefferies Group Inc. (NYSE: JEF) has estimates of $0.26 EPS and $665.6 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.36 EPS and $746.1 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $14.65, the 52-week trading range is $13.85 to $27.12, and the consensus target is $22.22. Jefferies has not been immune from the market’s pounding of banks and brokerage firms, but this is one broker and i-banker expected to grow.

Each morning of the week we pull the top analyst upgrades, downgrades, and initiations from Wall Street research reports. It turns out that some research calls were far more important or far more impacting than others and many have ramifications that will last for quite some time. These make “The Analyst Calls of the Week.” This week’s top research calls were in the following: American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG); AECOM Technology Corp. (NYSE: ACM); ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH); Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY); Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A); Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX); Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO); The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO); Cree Inc. (NASDAQ: CREE); First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR); HomeAway, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWAY); LM Ericsson Telephone Co. (NASDAQ: ERIC); ; Magnum Hunter Resources Corp. (NYSE: MHR); and SLM Corporation (NYSE: SLM).

We have highlighted the calls individually with the rating and target, along with an implied impact. Color has also been added if applicable.

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) could use all the friends it can get. One of the most hated companies in America was Raised to Market Perform at KBW on Tuesday and the call actually helped it close higher on the week from when it was made. Shares went from $22.58 to close out the week at $23.13, even if this was down from $25.10 the prior Friday.

AECOM Technology Corp. (NYSE: ACM) will not sound like much because it was just Reiterated as a Buy rating at Argus on Tuesday. It was the $33 price target objective that implies some 60% upside or so. It turns out that the consensus target is still above $32.00 and the trick here is understanding the upside when so much core infrastructure business is at risk in the age of austerity.

ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) rallied on Friday even though the ADR was cut from Buy down all the way to Underperform at BofA/Merrill Lynch. This company has grown massively with the smartphone and mobile web explosion and BofA sees the competition coming on strong now. What is so interesting is that Goldman Sachs added the mobile chip and processor outfit to the prized Conviction Buy List at the same time. At $25.65, the 52-week range is $14.16 to $32.18.

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY) is one that you rarely get big pullback buying opportunities because its customer base buys the housing needs there whether times are good or bad. On Friday this retailer was raised to Outperform from Perform by Oppenheimer and the price target was raised from $59 to $63 in the call. Shares had briefly dipped under $53 during the peak selling this week and the 52-week range is $26.50 to $57.90. The call seems late, but the highlight is that you rarely get big opportunities here in Bed Bath & Beyond.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) does not have much of an analyst following for its size due to so many moving parts and due to a lock-down of information to the outside. So when you see two big research calls you have to wonder. Mr. Buffett and friends saw Berkshire Raised to Outperform at Keefe Bruyette & Woods and also was Raised to Overweight by Barclays. Very rare to see two in a week.

Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX) needs all the research help it can get. The turnaround medical devices company was Raised to Outperform on Tuesday by Zacks, but more important was the additional “Bull of the Day” assignment along with it. Shares were at $6.00 before the call and the stock closed out the week at $6.41 for nearly a 7% gain.

No money was injured while filming

If you have been a reader of 24/7 Wall St. for long, you know that we appreciate companies that pay dividends just about as much the investors who buy companies because of their great dividends. With all of the uncertainty in today’s markets and in today’s economy, having a solid dividend policy may be the key to keeping nervous investors from fleeing and going into cash or other assets that actually pay no income at all. Some of the greatest companies of today and yesteryear actually refuse to pay dividends to shareholders. For some companies, they can get away without paying a cent to owners because the value and growth is so strong. There is another list of “Dividend Sinners” which should be paying a dividend to holders and have just decided to control that cash in-house instead.

We have identified more than twenty Dividend Sinners. Our review focuses on Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY), Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A), Cincinnati Bell Inc. (NYSE: CBB), Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL), Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG ), Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY), Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), Express Scripts, Inc. (NASDAQ: ESRX), Flextronics International Ltd. (NASDAQ: FLEX), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), Jack In The Box Inc. (NASDAQ: JACK), Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ), Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL), Urban Outfitters, Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN), Western Digital Corporation (NYSE: WDC), Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), and Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA).

You can see that many of these are not technology giants. Many are. The aim is to handicap which companies still can get away without paying out income to their shareholders versus those which can and should. Some of the more obvious Dividend Sinners are the same as you have seen criticized before, but many of these are overlooked by the media and by investors alike. In some cases the lack of dividend payments is just ludicrous. Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) waited far too long to adopt a dividend policy and look what happened to its shares after inaction. Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE: KSS) took until this year before finally declaring a dividend while its direct competitors have paid dividends for years.

Again, some companies can get away without paying holders a penny. Our aim was to identify the highly able companies and those which lag peers enough that the dividend trend just needs to be considered by management of these companies. We looked at forward P/E ratios based upon next year’s estimates from Thomson Reuters, the return on equity (ROE) from Finviz.com, the current share price and a 52-week trading range, along with the market cap of each company. If applicable, we handicapped competitor and peer dividends and even noted how high of a dividend these companies could pay out.

Activist investors could have a field-day with at least a few of these dividend sinners…

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is the online retail king. It has a forward price earnings multiple of 56 and a return on equity (ROE) of 16.3%. Its market cap is $100 billion. The recent share price was $222 and the 52-week trading range is $114.51 to $227.20. While much of the tone of this article might seem to be geared around a negative impact of a no-dividend policy, Amazon.com is actually in a different camp. At 58-times 2012 projected earnings, the question to ask is “how high of a dividend could it pay anyway?”… Wall Street has even been able to absorb habitually lower and lower margins as it ramps up its capital spending. With shares having now hit the $100 billion market cap and having hit fresh all-time highs, is there are reason to criticize the company right now? We predicted that it would be on of the next mega-cap stocks for a reason.

Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) is due with earnings shortly and its path has been a boring one for long enough. The largest independent biotech outfit has a forward price earnings multiple of 9.7 and a return on equity (ROE) of 19.4%. Its market cap is $51 billion. The recent share price was $54.00 and the 52-week trading range is $50.26 to $61.53. Investors hope and pray that Amgen will be the first of the big biotechs to finally declare a dividend. The call has been a longstanding call and the company has more than enough ample cash and patent protection to justify a healthy payout. With about $15 billion in liquidity and $10 billion in long-term debt, investors should ask the company to stop wasting the cash by repurchasing shares in the open market. It hasn’t worked as is the case with most share buyback plans. If it is not going to have a dividend, maybe it should consider growing into new arenas with a substantial acquisition. Our take is that Amgen is going to have to do something at some point soon and a dividend will do far better than a stock buyback plan.
