Earnings season is still going strong and Wednesday will have many big earnings reports to watch. These are not the only earnings reports coming from big companies, but these are the ones we will be watching closely: Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET); The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL); AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL); BMC Software Inc. (NASDAQ: BMC); Capstead Mortgage Corp. (NYSE: CMO); Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG); Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR); JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ: JDSU); Las Vegas Sands Corporation (NYSE: LVS); NASDAQ OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ); and QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM).

We have provided estimates from Thomson Reuters on each and offered commentary and guidance on some of these companies. More detailed previews will be available Tuesday morning for the reports due after the closing bell:

Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET) estimates are $0.98 EPS and $8.49 billion. Watch the medical loss ratio here as it seems to be in quarters past that insurance outfits have been making more money than they were supposed to be making once the new healthcare laws go into effect. With shares around $44, the year high is $46.01.

The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL) will prove if it has everyone in good hands or not. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.97 EPS. With shares around $29, its 52-week range is $22.27 to $34.40.

AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL) has now seen shares bounce 60% off of the bottom and that is despite the recent news that Facebook is taking much of the new advertising market share. Estimates are $0.16 EPS per Thomson Reuters data but we just saw $0.28 noted in a Dow Jones preview yesterday. That being said, we are staying out of this one.

BMC Software Inc. (NASDAQ: BMC) is expected to post $0.82 EPS on almost $556 million in sales.

Capstead Mortgage Corp. (NYSE: CMO) is not a market moving stock, but investors who are into the world of high-yielding mortgage REITs will be watching. The estimate is $0.41 EPS (actually FFO) and the next dividend will be likely dependent upon that report. Its dividend yield screens north of 13% today.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) is a cult stock if there every was one and now its valuation is close to $11.5 billion and the stock is within 2% of its all-time high. Thomson Reuters has a consensus of $1.83 EPS and $591.1 million in sales. For 2012, the estimates are $8.68 EPS and 2.7 billion in revenues.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) is another huge cult stock down on its luck from recent highs. The stock is still down by more than half. Thomson Reuters has estimate at $0.36 EPS and $1.06 billion in sales.

JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ: JDSU) still has a huge shareholder base that got buried in the first big tech bubble. At $12.75, the 52-week range is $8.59 to $29.12. Thomson Reuters has a consensus of $0.10 EPS and $390.9 million.

Las Vegas Sands Corporation (NYSE: LVS) is also within striking distance of a near-term high as shares are currently around $49.00 against a 52-week range of $36.05 to $50.68. The consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters are $0.57 EPS and $2.46 billion in sales.

NASDAQ OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) is a value stock when it comes to the exchanges and it is not supposedly trying to do any crazy merger right now. At $25.00 the 52-week range is $20.32 to $29.71. The consensus estimate is $0.62 EPS and $417.8 million.

QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM)is within striking distance of its yearly high as shares are around $58.80 and the 52-week range is $45.98 to $59.84. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.90 EPS on $4.57 billion in revenues. Next quarter estimates are $0.89 EPS and $4.49 billion in sales. Keep in mind that if it rallies much more than the current $98.8 billion market cap will be $100 billion.

The month of October was one of the best ever for equities with double-digit gains from teh S&P 500 Index. There were some disappointments, however, and the ten worst performing stocks of the month lost between -3.4% and more than -25% of their value versus gains of 10.9% for the index. Here’s a look at the worst performers and a bit of color, together with implied upside based on Thomson/Reuters data on consensus price targets.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. fell -3.4%, from $38.78 to $37.45. The consensus price target for the stock is $42.00. The drinks maker posted solid earnings in the third quarter, and it pays a high 3.3% dividend yield. The downturn could just be a loss of confidence in sugary soft drinks.

Bemis Company Inc. (NYSE: BMS) fell -4.1%, from $29.31 to $28.11. The consensus price target for the stock is $34.00. The company makes flexible packaging for food and pharmaceuticals and last week announced that it would close “several” small plants around the world.

Avon Products Inc. (NYSE: AVP) fell -6.7%, from $19.60 to $18.28. The consensus price target is $29.00. The cosmetics maker got another downgrade this morning from Jefferies, and is also the subject of a federal investigation into bribery charges.

Cerner Corp. (NASDAQ: CERN) fell -7.4%, from $68.52 to $63.43. The consensus price target is $71.00. The company develops software for health care providers and, though it reported good earnings for the previous quarter, an announced acquisition is likely weighing on the share price.

Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) fell -8%, from $15.73 to $14.47. The consensus price target is $22.00. The cable TV provider reported lower profits in the third quarter and a subsidiary just sold $1 billion in senior unsecured notes. Investors are also concerned at the company’s rising costs.

BMC Software Inc. (NASDAQ: BMC) fell -9.9%, from $38.56 to $34.76. The consensus price target is $49.50. The business software maker said last week that its bookings are weak through the end of the year, and the share price got crushed.

Hospira Inc. (NYSE: HSP) fell -15%, from $37.00 to $31.45. The consensus price target is $36.50. The pharmaceutical and medicine company could feel the impact of a recent executive order signed by President Obama related to the distribution of generic drugs.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) fell -15.5%, from $3.04 to $2.57. The consensus price target is $3.70. The wireless carrier has essentially bet the company on the iPhone, and there is plenty of skepticism on Sprint’s ability to win the bet.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) fell -21.3%, from $63.21 to $49.77. The consensus price target is $100.00. First Solar’s share price topped $175 in the past 12 months, but falling module prices and lower government support is killing the whole solar sector. As the largest company by market cap in the sector, First Solar has taken a vicious beating.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) fell -27.5%, from $113.27 to $82.08. The consensus price target is $185.00. The stock’s 52-week high is over $300 and it is trading today at around $80. Shares were pummeled following an announced price increase, vehement opposition from subscribers, and the loss of 800,000 of those subscribers. Things could get worse here before they get better.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has been the king of tech stocks. While Apple’s results still showed rapid earnings and revenue growth, the report disappointed and results were below Wall Street’s expectations. And without Steve Jobs many investors are wondering whether Apple can continue to “wow” investors as it has over the last decade. Most analysts are tying Apple’s first earnings miss in years to customer delays of iPhone purchases as they waited for the new model introduced last week. Still, the media, and a few analysts, have brought up the question of whether this could be the end of an era. 24/7 Wall St. has identified 13 technology stocks that are expected to outperform Apple in the year ahead, especially now that Apple’s earnings have stumbled.

Apple hit an all-time high this week at $426.70. The stock closed at $422.20 on Tuesday just ahead of earnings. After the announcement, shares fell to about $400, which is where they are likely to open today. Analysts have a consensus price target of roughly $499.00 on the stock, which implies an upside of about 18% from Tuesday’s close, and an upside of 24.5% from $400. 24/7 Wall St. looked at these analyst numbers and found more than ten technology stocks with more implied upside.

In our screen, we only included companies with a market cap of $1 billion and higher. We also restricted the list to companies that are expected to post positive earnings this year and next and to those with long-term operating histories. We used consensus data on earnings and consensus analyst price targets from Thomson Reuters. We did additional analysis of our own on each company. Oddly enough, several of these companies are even tied to Apple’s businesses.

We include the most recent closing share prices, a 52-week range for comparison, and the Thomson Reuters consensus price target for the next twelve months. We have identified what the implied upside is to that price target, shown a year-to-date change from Finviz.com, and given a forward P/E ratio based on next year (2012 in most cases) earnings estimates.

We are seeing several key movers in the after-hours session, some based on earnings and some based upon other events. Those on the move are BMC Software Inc. (NYSE: BMC), Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN), ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO), iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV), JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ: JDSU), Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc. (NASDAQ: KLIC), Mercadolibre, Inc. (NASDAQ: MELI), News Corporation (NASDAQ: NWSA), and Smith Micro Software Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI).

We have added a news synopsis and the move on each and added color where applicable.

BMC Software Inc. (NYSE: BMC) beat earnings estimates and sees a strong 2012. Its shares closed down 1.1% but the stock is up 5.25% at $51.65 on more than 50,000 after-hours shares.

Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN) reported record growth in catheter sales and a record number of procedures. This one closed up 0.6% at $3.06 and the stock is up almost 6% at $3.24 on only about 30,000 after-hours shares.

ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO) closed down 4.7% today ahead of earnings and shares are down again after the earnings report turned in a 2% revenue gain. The company did note that Libya created a large sale going on indefinite hold. The company’s shares are down some 11% at $9.50 in the after-hours session.

iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) had a rough day with silver taking the stock down 5.7% to $38.28 today. In the after-hours we have seen over 800,000 shares and the stock is up 0.3% at $38.38. This might not mean much, but the consideration is that this lost about $10 since Friday.

JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ: JDSU) is soaring after it beat expectations. The stock closed down 1.3% but it is up 9.45% at $21.89 on more than 2 million after-hours shares.

Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc. (NASDAQ: KLIC) may be a clean-up trade or may be a thought that not all companies in chip cap-ex will get acquired after the Applied-Varian merger. Shares were down 4.2% at $10.20 on 145,000 after-hours shares. Again, it is possible these were just clean-up trades from earlier.

Mercadolibre, Inc. (NASDAQ: MELI) shares closed down 1.1% at $85.77, but the company reported along with earnings that it was entering a “CFO transition” and that has shares lower by 5.7% to $80.88 on almost 100,000 shares in the after-hours.

News Corporation (NASDAQ: NWSA) turned in earnings that were both lower and lower than expected. Shares closed down 1% at $17.34 today and the stock is down another 3.1% at $16.80 on more than 250,000 after-hours shares.

(NASDAQ: CSCO) came out with its big technology platform announcement, as prior reports had hinted at. This includes announcements for services and products involving Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT), VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW)and EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), BMC Software Inc. (NYSE: BMC), and Accenture Ltd. (NYSE: ACN). While this sounds complex, it is not really that complex. But there are some risks. This could cloud the waters at Cisco in determining if it wants to use the business model of an arms dealer or a mercenary. It may also open the company to risks in new businesses which it has been able to avoid to date.

The Cisco Unified Computing System is a next-generation datacenter platform that unites computer, network, storage access and virtualization into a cohesive system and, coupled with the VMware vSphere generation of products, will provide an efficient, reliable, scalable and flexible environment for delivery of IT-as-a-service.

This could bring Cisco into a war with longtime partners. A lot of it depends on just how deep Cisco goes into branding this effort. Does this or does this not sound like what IBM (NYSE: IBM) has done in datacenters and what Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) with its equipment and IT services? It is hard to see if this will put Cisco in competition where IBM and H-P start asking customers to shift IT spending away from Cisco. It is easy to see where Cisco could ask enterprise clients to give it more of the total IT spending. And guess at whose expense that would be?

As far as Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Cisco will pre-package, resell, and support Microsoft products. That is a spot that Cisco couldn’t get away from in today’s world even if wanted to (or wants to).

As far as Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT), Cisco will act as an OEM for Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux platform to allow customers to purchase a complete solution from Cisco along with services and support.

BMC Software Inc. (NYSE: BMC), the BMC Business Service Management and Cisco’s Unified Computing System will enhance customer ability to provision and reconfigure the stack of mission-critical business services.

The Accenture Cisco Unified Computing Solution is meant to help companies migrate their ERP and computing applications to the more cost-effective virtualized platform.

This ties in the upcoming virtual data center operating system, the VMware vSphere, to give customers access to a virtualized and physical computing system over an intelligent and unified network fabric. As far as EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), the two will continue collaboration on design and testing integrated technology architectures for seamless deployment of technologies. The two will also focus on discovery and dependency mapping, automated root cause analysis, and policy-based configuration management.

We are not yet ready to endorse this or slam this. There are pros and there are cons. Cisco could be expanding its total share grab of enterprise IT spending. There is no doubt about that being part of the goal here. But now you could have others in the space, who also deal with all or many of these same partners who might start encouraging customers to direct more of that same total IT spending away to other players in the communications equipment space. Cisco is a powerful technology foe in any space it enters. But there are also many new companies which still compete in the space.

The market looks like it is undecided on just what this will ultimately generate. So far, there is a very mixed reaction in all of these stocks.

BMC Software Inc. (NYSE: BMC) is doing something that many software and technology companies might consider heresy. It grew earnings, and is raising guidance. Doen’t the company know there is a recession?

It posted flat Q3 net income flat of $83.8 million. This translates to $0.64 non-GAAP EPS. Revenue rose more than 6% to $488.4 million. Thomson Reuters estimates were $0.59 EPS and $487.6 million in revenue.

The company said it was raising guidance for earnings for the full fiscal year to $2.20 and $2.30 EPS excluding items. Keep in mind that March will mark the year end, but these estimates are $2.19 EPS.

Shares closed down marginally but are trading up 4% at $26.95 in after-hours reaction. Its 52-week trading range is $20.58 to $40.87. Maybe some companies just get it right even in hard times.
