At Least The Chinese Stimulus Works For The American Economy

china

Economists debate the impact of the U.S. economic stimulus plan, and if a second round of stimulus is needed. But there’s no doubt that China’s plan is working for us.

In the many rounds of second-quarter earnings calls, the CFOs of U.S. companies are lauding how well they are doing in China. Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) topped Q2 expectations, saying that China’s fiscal stimulus is beginning to work for them. United Technologies Corp.(NYSE: UTX), expects strong second-half China results, as the economy there begins to recover. Read More »

Major Earnings Estimates, A Bar Set Too Low (INTC, AMR, LUV, BTU, GOOG, GCI, HOG, GE)

We have already seen at least one major upside surprise in earnings season for the Q1-2009 period.  But we have many major companies which are expected to report earnings this week that are market-movers that are likely to set the trends for this earnings season.  Among these are CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX), Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR), Peabody Energy Corp. (BTU), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG), and General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE).  You’ll notice we have left financial stocks off of here, as that is for another piece.

It turns out some of these have seen the bar lowered  by analysts to the point that these companies could represent very large “fake” upside surprises.  Compared to last year, or even last quarter, some of these earnings are genuinely going to be atrocious.  The good news here is that most traders and analysts just refer to the consensus estimates, and for these we use the Thomson Reuters (First Call) estimates.  We wanted to outline how these earnings compare to history and to estimates, and how much these have recovered with the rally in the last five weeks.

CO2 Restriction Easing on Coal-fired Power Plants? (BTU, ACI, MEE, CNX, FTEK)

Carbon_emissions_imageLast August, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ruled that a proposed coal-fired power plant in Utah did not need to file for a clean-air permit because the emissions from the plant were not regulated pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Carbon dioxide, which all of us expel every time we exhale, is not a pollutant under the EPA regulations. Thus, if a power plant is going to emit carbon dioxide, it’s just breathing.

ConocoPhillips, Peabody Energy Will Convert Coal-to-Gas (COP, BTU)

Turning coal into natural gas is not brand-new technology, but it is rarely done because natural gas is, or has been, relatively cheap. Not as cheap as coal, but cleaner to burn for electricity generation.

ConocoPhillips Corporation (NYSE:COP) and Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) plan to build a "mine-mouth" coal gasification plant in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The companies have filed for an air permit, which is the latest in a number of steps that need to be completed before construction begins.
