US markets opened higher this morning and traded higher for most of the day. The DJIA briefly rose above 13,000 for the first time in nearly 3 years. But in the early afternoon, apparently as a result of a failure to break through the 13,000 barrier, stocks turned south and all three indexes fell below their openings. The announced settlement in Greece boosted the market early, and climbing crude oil prices helped energy stocks all day. Commodity prices also rose today as the dollar lost strength. Crude oil was up sharply, with WTI crude up more than 2% at $105.50/barrel and Brent up 0.81% at $121.02/barrel. Gold settled at $1,758.50, up 1.9%, and a two-week high.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 16 points to 12,965.99 (0.12%), the NASDAQ fell more than 3 points (-0.11%) to 2,948.57, and the S&P 500 rose 0.07% or nearly 1 point to 1,362.23.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL) cut to ‘market perform’ at JMP Securities; Itron Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) cut to ‘neutral’ at Credit Suisse; CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX) cut to ‘neutral’ at JPMorgan; ABB Ltd. (NYSE: ABB) cut to ‘equal weight’ at Morgan Stanley; and Gilead Sciences Inc. (NYSE: GILD) cut to ‘equal weight’ at Barclays.

Earnings reports since markets closed last Friday have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is down -4.65% at $12.50 (more coverage here); Boyd Gaming Corp. (NYSE: BYD) is down -10.6% at $8.57; Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. (NYSE: CCO) is down -3.65% at $12.16; Cobalt International Energy Inc. (NYSE: MDT) is down -2.6% at $38.92; Pioneer Drilling Co. (NYSE: PXD) is down -0.2% at $113.45; Saks Inc. (NYSE: SKS) is up 3.4% at $11.24; Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is down -4.1% at $59.90; and Westlake Chemical Corp. (NYSE: WLK) is down -4.2% at $57.93.

Weatherford International Ltd. (NYSE: WFT) is down nearly -14% at $15.34. The oil field services company will restate prior earnings due to what the company calls “material weakness in internal controls over financial reporting for income taxes relating to current taxes payable, certain deferred tax assets and liabilities, reserves for uncertain tax positions, and current and deferred income tax expense.” Weatherford expects to take a charge for $225-$250 million for the years before 2010.

We have some major changes announced by S&P for its three key indexes. Changes are in the S&P 500 Index, S&P Mid-Cap 400 Index, and in the S&P SMall Cap 600 Index.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) will replace RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) with only a $1.4 billion market cap in the S&P 500 index, RadioShack will replace Harte-Hanks Inc. (NYSE: HHS) in the S&P MidCap 400 index, and Harte-Hanks with a $530 million market capitalization will replace Hutchinson Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: HTCH) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index as it ranked as #600 by market cap in the index.

Marathon Oil Corp. (NYSE: MRO), a current S&P 500 constituent, is spinning off Marathon Petroleum to its shareholders after the market close on June 30; what’s left of Marathon Oil will remain in the S&P 500 index following the spin-off. S&P SmallCap 600 index and is no longer representative of the small cap market space.

AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AMCXV) will replace Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE: BYD) in the S&P MidCap 400 index; Boyd Gaming will replace StarTek Inc. (NYSE: SRT) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index as StarTek has only a $62 million market cap. Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) is spinning off AMC Networks after the market close on June 30 and what remains of Cablevision Systems will remain in the S&P 500 index.

Holly Corp. (NYSE: HOC), a S&P SmallCap 600 constituent, will replace Frontier Oil Corp. (NYSE: FTO) in the S&P MidCap 400 index. Entropic Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: ENTR) will replace Holly in the S&P SmallCap 600. Holly is acquiring Frontier Oil in a deal expected to be completed on or about June 30 and it will change its name to HollyFrontier Corporation after the merger.

These index changes matter, but the largest gains generally come from the new additions rather than when a company moves up or down in the indexes. RadioShack is indicated down about 2% and under $13.00; and Entropic is indicated up 3% around $8.55 but no trades have been seen.

As far as the others mentioned in the move, they are ratcheted moves within the various indexes. The surprise is a simple one by our take: No General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) yet in the S&P 500 despite a $45 billion market cap.

At the time, Apollo and TPG each anted up $1.325 billion for a 23% stake each in Harrah’s, and added another $12 billion in debt to pay for the deal, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The SEC filing comes as some signs of life reappear in the casino business. Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS)and Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN) both beat EPS expectations in the June quarter. The not-as-good news is that MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) and Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: MPEL) missed June quarter forecasts. Boyd Gaming Corp. (NYSE: BYD) reported weaker-than-expected EPS this morning although the company did beat revenue expectations.

Harrah’s IPO filing did not disclose either the amount of stock to be sold or the expected pricing of the stock, but the offering is expected to raise about $575 million. The test here is whether or not private equity firms can beat down investors’ doors. Apollo and TPG bought Harrah’s at a market peak, and even though Harrah’s has cut $500 million in costs, the company allowed hedge fund Paulson & Co. to take on $710 million in Harrah’s debt in June for about $470 million. That implies a value for Harrah’s of $4.7 billion.

If the Apollo and TPG cash out in an IPO, each would lose at least $200 million, according to the WSJ. Proceeds from the IPO would not be used to pay down debt, but would go instead to complete unfinished projects in the US.

And that’s another part of the problem for Harrah’s. The company lacks a presence in Macau, currently the global hot spot for building casinos and resorts.

Harrah’s has pushed the US Congress to allow internet gambling, and it may be getting somewhere with that campaign. Without a Macau location or the ability to leverage its World Series of Poker on-line, Harrah’s may have a tough time convincing investors that it is worth the risk.

The outlook for casinos is improving slightly, so that may help the Harrah’s IPO. Fitch Ratings recently upped its outlook for MGM to “positive” after the company’s announcement of a follow-on offer to raise $595 million.

But the rosier future might not include Harrah’s, which would still hold about $20 billion in debt after the IPO. Apollo and TPG would not sell all their stakes at the IPO, probably hoping that they will be able to recoup more if they stay in the game. Now that’s high stakes poker.

Paul Ausick

Twitter has, by most estimates, 100 million members, which makes it one of the largest social networks in the world. All major media companies are on Twitter and some have more than one million Twitter users. It raises the question of whether there is wisdom in crowds.

24/7 Wall St. will look at the Twitter posts at Reuters Biz, WSJ, Financial Times, CNN Money, MarketWatch, CNBC, and 24/7 Wall St. each day to see which stocks are most frequently mentioned. It is clear that in this area of social media these tweet are a sign of which companies the Twitter universe is interested in. These financial sites are followed by a combined 625,000 Twitter users which makes them a sizeable sample of Wall St.’s interests. In some cases, we will publish the actual tweets from the sites.

Among the daily top trending symbols on stock twitter aggregator StockTwits are Boyd Gaming Corp (NYSE: BYD), Psychiatric Solutions, Inc (NASDAQ: PSYS), MasterCard Incorporated (NYSE: MA), and Copart, Inc (NASDAQ: CPRT)
