Top Day Trader Alerts (BBT, AA, CENX, GENT, ENS, HPQ, CERS, AAPL)

These are this Wednesday’s top day trader and active stock alerts.  We have more detailed data on volume and price analysis with links through to VSInvestor.com on each stock:

BB&T Corp. (NYSE: BBT) was down about 1% after its secondary offering after S&P weighting changes.

Alcoa, Inc. (NYSE: AA) is down about 4% after an analyst downgrade from Goldman Sachs.

Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ: CENX) is getting clipped by more than 6% this morning after yesterday’s gains.

Gentium S.p.A (NASDAQ: GENT) is surging on mixed Phase III treatment trial of Defibrotide for severe veno-occlusive disease.

EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) is indicated much lower on an insider-backer share sale of 3.2 million shares to Goldman Sachs.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is down after earnings, and we made some support calculations for key levels to watch in the coming days if the weakness persists here.

Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ: CERS) is seeing a huge surge on news that Swissmedic has approved the use of platelet components treated with Cerus’ INTERCEPT Blood System.

This volume took place late yesterday, but we started seeing elevated put and call options trading in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL).  This could have been H-P related or it could have merely been options rolling trades from August to September ahead of Friday’s expiration.  So far AAPL shares are down less than 1% at $162.75 on only 100,000 shares.

Biotech Business Daily (AMLN, CERS, LLY, DNA, GTOP, IMCL)

Amylin Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AMLN) reported first quarter losses of $68.8 million, or $0.51 EPS, wider than the $49.4 million in the first quarter of 2007. Losses are credited to a drop in sales in diabetes treatment, Byetta, a drug they co-market with Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), and increased expenses. Analysts estimated losses of $0.47 EPS. Shares are down over 8% to $28.83 on a 52-week range of $23.75 to $53.25.

Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ: CERS) up on news that the company can expand label claims on platelets and plasma treated with the INTERCEPT Blood System. The System prevents transfusion-associated disease, TA-GVHD. The label expansion allows use of the System over gamma irradiation in European blood banks for TA-GVHD prevention, decreasing costs to blood banks and increasing safety. Shares of Cerus are up almost 5% to $6.75. The 52-week range is $4.18 to $10.29.

Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) doubled profits, tagging a first quarter profit of $1.1 billion on a 14% sales increase. However, although doubling, they failed to meet Street estimates. Sales of depression drug Cymbalta rose 37% while sales of Zyprexa were flat and Byetta rose less than expected. The company raised its full-year guidance. Shares are down $2.26 to $49.81 on a 52-week range of $46.60 to $61.00.

Genentech (NYSE: DNA) released updated data on Avastin for the treatment of lung cancer. Results showed increased progression-free survival but not overall lung cancer survival rates. The already approved treatment in conjunction with chemotherapy is fighting for market share in the highly competitive market for this treatment. Shares are down $0.72 to $72 on a 52-week range of $65.35 to $82.90.

Genitope Corp (NASDAQ: GTOP) plummeting as GE Capital Corp. demanded payment on $3.8 million in loans last Friday. The company’s list of troubles is endless—failing Phase III testing, laying off 165 of 200 employees, salary cuts…and the latest failure to repay debts. Shares are down 16% today to $0.15, a new low. The 52-week range is $0.16 to $4.93.

ImClone (NASDAQ: IMCL) up on news that lung cancer competitor Genentech released disappointing late stage data on Avastin. ImClone’s similar drug, Erbitux, is currently in clinical trials. Shares are up $1.68 to $47.83, near 52 week highs. The 52-week range is $30.34 to $47.94.

Biotech Busine$$ Daily (ACOR, CERS, DNDN, STEM, TCM)

Biotechs always have some news movers regardless of which direction the markets are headed.  Here are some of the top movers in biotech today, although we would note that many of the largest market cap biotech stocks are up on a day that the DJIA, S&P 500, and NASDAQ are dragging lower.

Acorda Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ACOR) down 5% today to $19.56. Yesterday, a study the company sponsored on multiple sclerosis was released showing the negative impact MS had on people suffering from the disease. The 52 week range is $15.80 to $28.14.

Cerus Corp. (NASDAQ: CERS) stock up over 6% today to $543 on an announcement that the 32 studies of their INTERCEPT Blood System, a system that assists patients that underwent blood transfusions and avian flu deactivation, will be presented at the International Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion. The 52-week range is $4.18 to $10.29

Dendreon (NASDAQ: DNDN) up almost 8% in mid-day trading on no new news. Stocks are trading $0.40 higher at $5.16. The stock seems to be recovering from a slide March 12 when the company changed its tactics on for Phase III testing on prostate cancer immunotherapy Provenge.

StemCells Inc. (STEM) up by almost 8% today to $1.49, possibly in response to Nancy Reagan’s endorsement of Republican presidential nominee, John McCain, both supporters of stem cell research. The 52-week range is $1.00 to $3.09.

Tongjitang Chinese Medicines Co. (NASDAQ: TCM) up today on news that the company has appointed Morgan Stanley Asia Limited as its financial advisor. Shares have edged up $0.45 or by 5%, to $8.51 in mid-day trading on relatively high trading volume. The 52 week high is $12.88.
