Less Natural Gas Drilling, More LNG Imports? (BHI, LNG, BP, CHK, XTO)

nat-gas-picWe’ve been closely tracking the weekly rig counts published by Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE:BHI) for a while now. Drilling for oil has slowed significantly in the US, and drilling for natural gas has slowed even more. A year ago, Baker Hughes counted 1,227 gas rigs; last week, there were just 810, a drop of 44%. The biggest drop came in vertical rigs, with horizontal drilling off much less. Horizontal drilling is common in the shale gas plays such as the Barnett and Haynesville shales, and tends to drain the reservoirs more quickly than traditional vertical or directional drilling.

US and Europe – Two Sides of the Natural Gas Storage Coin (CHK)

nat-gas-picNatural gas contracts in the US have been trading at around $4/thousand cubic feet. The prime suspect for the low price is, surprise, the slow economy. The amount of natural gas being consumed has dropped, but since production has not slowed down as quickly as the economy, much of the gas being produced has gone into storage.

Natural Gas Prices Driven By LNG Imports? (DVN, CHK)

There are some issues surrounding natural gas that is keeping a cap on the sector.

Spot prices are bouncing around between $3.50 and $4.00 per thousand cubic feet. At those prices, unconventional shale gas plays are largely uneconomical.  The big US shale plays are the Barnett Shale in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Arkansas’ Haynesville Shale, where companies like Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE:DVN) and Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE:CHK) own vast drilling rights.

Energy Stocks That Should Double (VLO, CHK, FSLR, COP, BHI)

money-stack-image20oil-well-image2solar-panel-pic11This week 24/7 Wall St. is picking several stocks from major sectors that are likely to double off of their lows.  The time frame is by the end of 2010, which is meant to coincide with some form of economic recovery next year.  This is not based on a sharp turn up in the economy. A number of the credit and financial issues facing the markets will be in place for the near-term or longer.  The other assumption used for choosing the stocks is a market bottom of roughly 600 on the S&P 500 Index.

In the energy sector, we have outlined the assumptions and the reasons for Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI), Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), and Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO).

What If Chesapeake Production Cuts Work? (CHK, PXP, BP)

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK) is tired of not having profitable results from a key operation.  The largest natural gas player announced that it will cut its production by 7% and is considering a further reduction of 10% in drilling for 2009. Natural gas prices of about $2.70/thousand cubic feet get the blame. According to the company’s CEO, that’s a price at which most natural gas production is unprofitable.

Is Chesapeake Really In Play? (CHK, BP, STO)

Money_stack_pic_5Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) is trading marginally higher today on market chatter that BP plc (NYSE: BP) wants to acquire the company.  We first noticed this in the trading for options volume in our Volume Spike analysis from call options activity.   This would make for a very interesting combination, but we want to stress the fact that there has been market talk about this before.
