The Wendy’s Co. (NASDAQ: WEN) reported first quarter earnings this morning and managed to post another profit — barely. The company reported adjusted EPS of $0.01 versus a consensus estimate of $0.03. Revenue totaled $593.2 million, higher than a year ago, but below the estimate of $608.4 million. What will demolish shares today is Wendy’s reduction in its full-year outlook.

Competitors McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD), Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM), and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) have already reported quarterly results, with Yum and Chipotle Mexican Grill raising their outlooks rather than lowering them. Jack in the Box Inc. (NASDAQ: JACK), which reports later this month, is expected to post higher profit on slightly lower sales.

Wendy’s saw its margins drop from 13.4% a year ago to 11.8% this year, “due primarily to the impact from higher commodity costs — especially for fresh beef — and the impact from unfavorable product mix.” Commodity costs are what they are, and every restaurant faces the same issue, but having the wrong products is a management issue.

The company plans to fix that by remodeling its stores:

We are allocating substantial resources toward restaurant development, marketing, product innovation and customer service initiatives that we believe will ultimately accelerate sales growth, enhance the quality of our store base and grow our worldwide presence over time.

The key word there is “ultimately.” Will investors give the company the time it will need to make all those changes? And will the changes actually deliver on the promises?

The company closed a net 13 stores in the first quarter, bringing its worldwide total of locations to 6,581, only 354 of which are outside North America. Wendy’s also said that it “continues to target more than 8,000 locations outside North America.” The question is whether or not the company waited too long to look for growth overseas.

In the pre-market this morning, Wendy’s shares are down about -2.5% at $4.75 in a 52-week range of $4.29-$5.62.

Asian food eatery P.F. Chang’s China Bistro Inc. (NASDAQ: PFCB) this morning announced that it is being taken private in a deal worth $1.1 billion. The buyer is private equity firm Centerbridge Partners LP, which is paying $51.50/share for Chang’s. The price represents a 40% premium to Chang’s closing price last night.

The going-private move follows a similar deal for O’Charley’s Inc. (NASDAQ: CHUX), which agreed to a $221 buyout from Fidelity National Financial Inc. Other restaurant chains that have gotten some action, primarily from activist investors are Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. (NASDAQ: CBRL) and J. Alexander’s Corp. (NASDAQ: JAX).

Chang’s also reported first quarter earnings this morning, and both revenue and EPS came in well below consensus estimates. The company reported revenues of $318.9 million versus an estimate of $321.6 million, and EPS of $0.30 versus a consensus estimate of $0.36. EPS is sharply below last year’s $0.46/share, although revenues were up about $1.5 million compared with the year-ago quarter. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.35, not that far below estimates.

The restaurant reported that same-store sales at its P.F. Chang’s Bistros were down -0.6% and down -1.7% at its Pei Wei stores, due to lower traffic.

Cracker Barrel’s management said last week in a presentation for analysts and institutional investors that it had undertaken a number of “strategic initiatives” to boost shareholder returns. J. Alexander’s adopted a poison pill in March and the company’s independent directors received a letter from Privet Fund LP, which owns 12.6% of the company, urging them to “strive to create results that advance shareholder interests.”

Whether the interest in restaurant chains is a belief that the US economy is turning around and people will begin to dine out more often, or the interest is in the chains’ real estate holdings is not entirely clear. Cracker Barrel posted a new 52-week high in late February after an activist investor started demanding better results.

P.F. Chang’s hit a trough in mid-October 2011 and is facing new competition from a chain called ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, created by Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) last fall. Whether the new owners plan to compete or to sell off existing stores remains to be seen, but both options are now available where only the former was before today.

P.F. Chang’s shares are up 30% in the pre-market this morning, at $51.60.

The standout research calls this last week were in the following stocks: ABB Ltd. (NYSE: ABB); Allison Transmission Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ALSN); Amazon.com Inc. (NYSE: BBVA).

We have outlined a summary of each call and added in color on each to show why (and if) the analysts made calls worth watching.

ABB Ltd. (NYSE: ABB) is about to see a drop due to its ex-dividend date and we saw two simultaneous downgrades after an acquisition strategy was outlined this last week. On Thursday ABB shares were downgraded to Neutral at JPMorgan and they were also removed from he coveted Conviction Buy List but maintained as a ‘Buy’ over at Goldman Sachs. This one lost about 5% from earlier in the week by the time Friday’s close came around.

Allison Transmission Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ALSN) saw its quiet period end on Tuesday. Shares recovered on Friday due to stronger numbers elsewhere but the stock had been weak after the coverage started. We saw the following initiations: Started as Outperform at Baird; Started as Neutral at Citigroup; Started as Neutral at Credit Suisse; Started as Neutral at Goldman Sachs; Started as Neutral at J.P. Morgan; and Started as Hold at KeyBanc Capital Markets.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) was a Johnny Come-Lately call where several analysts decided all at once that they had to upgrade the online retail giant after it blew out its earnings: Raised to Buy at BofA/ML; Raised to Buy at Goldman Sachs; Raised to Buy at Nomura; Raised to Buy at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) blew the door off the hinges this last week with earnings. While it was already rated and effective buy rating, the new street-high official target is $1,111 and that will make it the first company worth more than $1 trillion by market cap if it comes true. This newest street-high call came from Topeka Capital Markets’ Brian White this last Wednesday.

CafePress Inc. (NASDAQ: PRSS) saw its quiet period end this last week and these are the calls we saw for analyst initiations: Started as Buy at Janney; Started as Outperform at Raymond James; and Started as Overweight at J.P. Morgan. The initiations being positive did not help the shares.

Just one week ago Good Times Restaurants Inc. (NASDAQ: GTIM) stock was available for about $1.50/share. Today the share posted a new 52-week high of $5.98 on no news. In fact the last news about the company came out last week, when it hired a consultant to help it find a “strategic transaction.” The company said at the time that one option might be more acquisitions, but the investors who are driving up the share price are clearly thinking buyout.

Good Times has a market cap of less than $13 million, even at today’s nosebleed prices. It is competing for dining out dollars with behemoths like McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD), Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM), Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX), and current darling Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG). Even mid-size eateries like Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI) and Sonic Corp. (NASDAQ: SONC) dwarf Good Times and its 45 locations, all but 4 of which are in Colorado.

In its latest annual report, Good Times noted that it sold one of its stores in exchange for modifications to its credit agreement. The company went through a 1-for-3 stock split in December 2010 and closed 3 more stores in 2011 in addition to the one it sold.

Good Times might be a fine place to eat, but a fine place to invest? Without the 4x bump in share price over the last week, the entire enterprise would be worth about $3 million.

With just over an hour to go in today’s trading session, Good Times shares are up 66.9% at $4.69 after posting a new intra-day high of $5.98. The 52-week low is $0.71. Remember that last figure.

(AZO); Crown Castle International Corp. (NYSE: CCI); Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG); FMC Corp. (NYSE: FMC); Gap, Inc. (NYSE: GPS); PPG Industries Inc. (NYSE: PPG); Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: V); and Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM).

The biggest questions to ask are 1) what makes these stock charts strong? and 2) what does it mean going forward? ChartLabPro.com’s algorithms use a quantitative approach that aim to forecast patterns by identifying consistent investment themes. The methodology uses over 200 indicators and scores them to locate trends in their early stages constantly running scenarios to locate inefficiencies and trends in stocks. Only four of the ten strongest stock charts were in the top ten strongest charts last week.

The current chart shows the year-to-date gains, prices for support and resistance on each stock, as well as an indication of just how strong each 5-rating or “strong buy” on a short-term trend. The strongest stock charts are never based solely on year-to-date performance but on more recent patterns. This aims to put the longer-term trends into a better short-term picture for the more active traders out there. The top 10 names on average are up 25.78% year-to-date and up 1.57% month-to-date. Compares that to the S&P 500 Index with gains of 8.2% year-to-date and a loss of -2.74% month-to-date.

The following stocks have exhibited the strongest chart patterns: AutoZone Inc. (AZO); Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG); The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD); Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC); Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISRG); Philip Morris International, Inc. (NYSE: PM); Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT); Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE); Unitedhealth Group, Inc. (NYSE: UNH); and Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM).

These names year to date have outperformed the S&P 500 by 12.92%. During the month of April these particular stocks have risen an average of 0.66% while the S&P 500 has actually fallen by a rate of -3.31%.

As always, past performance is not indicative of future results. These results for the strongest names are updated daily and stronger names do rotate daily into the composite of the top 10.

Currently the 10 stocks featured this week are not technically overbought, but they are approaching a overbought condition according to the methodology used by the Chartlabpro.com model.

The methodology from chartlabpro.com shows that a 5 rating is considered a Strong Buy and conversely a 1 is a Strong Sell. As a reminder, Chipotle, Intel, Philip Morris International, and Unitedhealth Group are due to report quarterly earnings in the coming days.

Featured exclusively for 24/7 Wall St. by ChartLabPro.com.

The report on new unemployment claims was weaker than expected (our coverage here), but better news from Europe, especially lower Italian bond yields, gave the market a lift. There is also some expectation that China’s GDP report tonight will be strong, indicating that the world’s second-largest economy is still growing. The US dollar index fell today, now down -0.64% at 79.288. The GSCI commodity index is up about 0.7% at 679.53, with virtually all commodities higher on the lower greenback. WTI crude oil closed up 0.9% at $103.64/barrel, and Brent crude trades up 1.22% at $121.65/barrel. Gold settled up 1.2% today, at $1,680.60/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 181 points to 12,986.43 (1.41%), the NASDAQ rose more than 39 points (1.3%) to 3,055.55, and the S&P 500 rose 1.38% or nearly 19 points to 1,387.57.

(NYSE: CMG) reiterated as ‘buy’ and target price raised to $480 at Argus.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Fastenal Corp. (NASDAQ: FAST) is down -1.8% at $48.73; Rite Aid Corp. What many investors might not know is that some hedge funds are reaching the size of large mutual fund families. They have become enormous. To give an idea of their size, the bottom two hedge funds among the top 10 in the U.S. alone have nearly $20 billion in assets under management each.

Read The 10 Largest Hedge Funds in America

What is even more amazing than the funds’ individual size is the size of the hedge fund world. In the U.S., funds that had $1 billion or more in assets cumulatively had assets under management of more than $1.3 trillion. Well over $1 trillion of those assets tracked were distributed in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The industry may be huge, but it is not stable. That’s because so many funds take such outsized risk to grow more rapidly than their competitors. Thousands of funds closed in 2008 after the fall of Lehman Bros. In what was probably the worst quarter in the industry’s history, Hedge Fund Research reported that 700 U.S. funds closed in the third quarter of that year. The funds not only lost money on investment, but also could not repay loans taken from banks that gave them leverage to help increase their asset bases.

The surge in the stock market and improvement in the economy lifted the hedge fund industry back toward record levels last year. According to HFR, the number of new funds rose to 1,113 last year from 935 in 2010, the most since 2007 when 1,197 were counted. Obviously, the success of the business is based to a large extent on the health of the economy, although some of the funds on this list have done well enough to defy that lesson.

A recent report from Absolute Return lists U.S. hedge funds according to their assets under management as of January 2012. A look at the top 10 hedge funds reveals several rather well-known names, but also shines a light on several completely unknown ones.

24/7 Wall St. examined the top 10 hedge funds and outlined their respective units. We also provided the funds’ investment strategies and included some of their top holdings if available.
