Each morning we cover about 15 to 20 analyst upgrades and downgrades which we think will have an impact on the underlying stocks. After each week we review those research calls and other research calls to see which ones really stood out or which ones had the most impact on each issue. Suddenly, we end up with the top analyst calls of the week.

This week there were far more and we actually have ten top analyst calls of the week because the calls were so varied. The Top Ten Analyst Calls of the Week were in shares of American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG), Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST), CBOE Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBOE), Citrix Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CTXS), JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ: JDSU), MakeMyTrip Limited (NASDAQ: MMYT), RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH), Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S), and in Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN).

On each call we have given the basics, but we have also added in some detail and then added color if applicable. This week also has a real mix between the equivalent of “Buy” or “Sell” when it comes to a bias. It was amazing how many important research calls came out this week considering that there were hardly any earnings reports that would send analysts into a frenzy.

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) was very important this week. Now that the secondary offering has been completed, many analysts in that huge underwriting group have initiated coverage. If you just look at the share price performance, AIG is now higher than the day it closed on its secondary offering went out. That was $28.28 on the close that day and shares are at $28.96 now at a time that the broad DJIA market and financials were lower. The summary ratings seen this week were as follows:

Bank of America Merrill Lynch started it with Buy rating;

Barclays started it with a Equal-Weight rating and a $31 target;

Deutsche Bank started it with a Buy rating and $34 target;

Goldman Sachs started it as Neutral with a $31 target;

UBS maintained Neutral, lowered target to $30.

Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG) saw a huge pop when its shares were raised to Raised to Buy from Hold at Canaccord Genuity this week. Analyst John Gerdes raised his target price from $58 to $85, or 47%, and noted that it clarified the coming Marcellus infrastructure buildout and believes Cabot should add another 200 million cubic feet per day of take away capacity by late this year with a another 450 million cubic feet per day by late next year. Shares went from $55.91 to a high of $60.64 that day and a close of $58.31 on that call. The gain at one point had shares up almost 8.5% and generated a close of up 4.3% on this. That is a very large move for an established energy company worth about $6 billion in market cap.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) is coming up with earnings this week and it makes turbine generator sets for use in stationary distributed power generation systems. It is one cult stock that we used to call “less dirty” energy in the green energy boom and it does have a cult following. What we could not get over was how FBR Capital Markets initiated a rating of “Outperform” and gave a $2.75 price target objective this last week. This company loses money and can be volatile after earnings. We wonder if the team at FBR stumbled upon something other than the Russian order that was announced. Their target price is $2.75 and shares rose more than 2% to $1.65 on the call (closed there Friday too). What FBR is saying is that it sees some 66% of upside remaining in the stock and that is assuming the event risk of the earnings.

CBOE Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBOE) was an interesting call from Goldman Sachs this last week. Exchanges are supposed to be consolidating and this one leads its field by far. So why did the team at Goldman Sachs cut the rating from an already-cautious “Neutral” down to “SELL” this week? Maybe it was the lock-up period expiration. Shares lost more than 2% on the call but quickly recovered to end the week at $24.26 versus a post-IPO range of $19.60 to $34.18.

(NASDAQ: COOL), Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST), Finisar Corporation (NASDAQ: FNSR), China Finance Online Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JRJC), Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), Pier 1 Imports Inc. (NYSE: PIR), Research In Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), and Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD).

Research In Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) is the obvious big one, but there are others like Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) and Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) that can move their sectors and related sectors. We have compiled data from Thomson Reuters consensus as well as shown pricing data and added color on each if applicable.

Majesco Entertainment Co. (NASDAQ: COOL) is due with earnings on Monday and this small-cap video game company has come back like a champ as it has focused on small format and “freemium” games in social media or mobile gaming. It just this week announced an NBA format game as well. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.07 EPS and $25.5 million in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are -$0.02 EPS and $17.5 million in revenue. Be advised that Majesco is very thin on analyst coverage so those figures may differ greatly from real results. Shares are trading around $4.08 and its 52-week range is $0.49 to $4.19 and its market cap is still only $153 million.

Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is due to report earnings on Tuesday and the current expectation during the slowdown looks very “Blah!” from where we sit today. The good news is that the stock is now very cheap and it does screen out as a “value stock” even if the bias is negative ahead of earnings. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.33 EPS and $10.69 billion in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $0.54 EPS and $11.41 billion in revenue. Shares are trading around $28.70 and its 52-week range is $28.09 to $45.63; Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target objective of almost $36.25.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) is due to report on Tuesday. This is another non-market mover and it won’t even be a sector-mover. It is still a cult stock in the alternative and green (or less dirty) energy. We might not even have cared, but a fresh call from FBR Capital brought attention here when it was started with an analyst rating of “Outperform.” We would caution that it is thinly covered by Wall Street. Thomson Reuters has estimates of -$0.03 EPS and $25.97 million in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are -$0.02 EPS and $24.7 million in revenue. Shares are trading around $1.66 and its 52-week range is $0.62 to $2.14.

Finisar Corporation (NASDAQ: FNSR) is due to report Wednesday. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.33 EPS and $242.89 million in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $0.38 EPS and $253.9 million in revenue. Shares are trading around $18.30 and its 52-week range is $11.98 to $46.09. Needless to say, this one was bashed at its last earnings. This one got hit this last week when CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN) was hit after earnings. Don’t quote us on this (unless it recovers), but if Finisar can meet its lowered expectations it is actually now showing up as a “value stock” for investors looking at companies that trade at under 10-times forward earnings. Needless to say, this one has not exactly gone too well in 2011.

China Finance Online Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JRJC) has not escaped the China-bash trade, particularly since this company provides online financial and listed company data and information in China. We only have one real estimate so this one is likely more of a “language” report than a “meet or beat” report. Its earnings report is due Thursday. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.06 EPS and $14.99 million in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $0.04 EPS and $15.06 million in revenue. Shares are trading around $3.91 and its 52-week range is $3.65 to $8.59.

Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) is due to report on Thursday. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $ EPS and $ in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $ EPS and $ in revenue. Shares are trading around $23.40 and its 52-week range is $19.56 to $25.48. With cost pressures still persisting, the low margins are something to watch here as companies are not yet able to pass on major price hikes in retail food sales.

Pier 1 Imports Inc. (NYSE: PIR) is due Thursday. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.12 EPS and $334.96 million in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $0.13 EPS and $333.97 million in revenue. Shares are trading around $11.05 and its 52-week range is $5.67 to $12.75. As you should have noticed, Pier 1 is back to making money and the stock has held up fairly well since its recovery when you consider that it was an at-risk brand during the recession.

Research In Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) is the Big Kahuna due to report this coming Thursday. Needless to say, after the warnings and after the rise of Apple and Google, the expectations are low. R-I-M is one company which could even find itself at-risk in the years ahead if the trends of today are not rectified. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $1.32 EPS and $5.15 in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $1.42 EPS and $5.51 billion in revenue. Shares are trading around $36.75 and its 52-week range is $$36.08 to $70.54. While this looks cheap and sounds cheap from an earnings valuation standpoint, keep in mind that many downgrades have been seen since its earnings warning. R-I-M is likely a value trap rather than a value stock as shares have continued to slide far worse than when it first warned. Our take… RIM should try to merge with Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK).

Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD) is supposed to be defensive in nature because it is food, but input costs and transportation costs have weighed on the fresh meat and packaged meat producer. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $0.82 EPS and $3.24 billion in revenue; the estimates for the coming quarter are $0.71 EPS and $3.23 billion in revenue. Shares are trading around $18.95 and its 52-week range is $13.34 to $24.93.

Oil has fallen off the proverbial cliff into the roll date and as the concerns that the eurozone’s weakness is going to spread enough to really hurt the recovery of the global oil demand. And then there is the de-risk trade taking place where traders and investors are taking money out of riskier assets. The true losers in this move are alternative energy stocks, and that is double the case if you are of the same mind that alternative energy stocks may represent nothing more than leveraged bets on the price of oil and fossil fuels.

Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) at $6.38 is down 4.35%, and the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSE: PBW) is down 4.56% at $8.44. Many of the component companies in these ETFs and some of the other alternative energy stocks we follow in our own universe of stocks in the sector are down well over 5%. We wanted to take a look at ten of the biggest losers in our alternative energy universe:

LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK) is down 5.10% at $5.58.

Evergreen Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: ESLR) is down 5.66% at $0.91.

JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. is down 5.5% at $4.84.

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is down 3.67% at $11.56.

Akeena Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKNS) is down 8.25% at $0.89.

Hoku Corporation (NASDAQ: HOKU) is down 5.41% at $2.80.

Zoltek Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) is down 7.8% at $9.68.

FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: FCEL) is down 9.87% at $2.10.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) is down 10.3% at $1.04.

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) is giving back some as well with shares down a surprising 6.8% at $28.78.

This is not always the case, but generally the riskier the alternative energy company the more the company has to lose in general with fossil fuels getting cheaper and cheaper. The more solid players tend to have more and more orders in place where at least the existing orders already on the books are deemed less at-risk.

The odd thing is that some of these moves are on somewhat weak volume, so some is just a buyer’s strike while each is trying to find equilibrium (if that really exists). Still, throw in European woes (large alternative energy clients) and a growing sense that there is a higher chance that the contagion will make economic recovery much less than expected and you have a ballgame.

Many alternative energy stocks themselves may sometimes represent little more than highly leveraged bets on the price of oil. But there is still big business in the world of clean tech and green technology. This week saw some interesting developments in the world of green business. In the news were Capstone Turbine Corp. (NASDAQ: CPST), Deere & Company (NYSE: DE), First Solar, Inc. (NASAQ: FSLR), Evergreen Solar Inc. (NASSDAQ: ESLR), and Veolia Environnement SA (NYSE: VE). Even Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) got in on the lower carbon news.

Capstone Turbine Corp. (NASDAQ: CPST) may have pulled a rabbit out of the hat for recent secondary offering buyers. Last week the company sold 38.1 million shares at $1.05. This was effectively a 15% discount from the $1.24 close. Share closed at $1.15 on the day of the pricing and slowly stepped down to $1.08 closes on Wednesday and Thursday. Yet on Friday we saw about 150% normal volume and the stock magically closed at $1.19 on no real news. This is not unheard of exactly, but it is not the norm.

Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) announced this week that it has hired Goldman Sachs to review strategic options for its wind energy business. In short, a sale of the unit is coming. So the company hopes, despite it saying “no formal decisions have been made and no agreements have been reached about the company’s long-term investments in wind energy projects….” Deere has been involved in wind energy projects for the past five years and claims 34 existing wind energy projects in seven states with operational capacity of 706 megawatts. Deere also claims many wind energy projects in development… Call this one whatever you want, but that is called an exit attempt. More breaking wind.

First Solar, Inc. (NASAQ: FSLR) announced on Friday evening that several of its officers executed transactions this week in First Solar shares in a February 22 to 26 trading window which comes four times per year. Chairman Michael Ahearn sold 1.5 million shares (over $150 million) in the open market as part of his planned share sale; CEO Rob Gillette purchased 10,000 shares in the open market with personal funds, and EVP of Marketing and Product Management T.K. Kallenbach purchased 1,000 shares in the open market with personal funds. This won’t be one of the greatest receptions, but what is most likely to be highlighted here this week is that First Solar broke the $100 barrier and came all the way back up to $105.75. There has been serious technical damage done to the chart here and the stock price needs to get back up about $10 more for the damage to not be confirmed…. The sentiment had changed going into earnings, but the new chart cares not. Stay tuned.

“Texas Has a —–House In It!” Actually, that is ‘Solar’… This week TXU announced a new initiative with SolarCity to lease solar roofing modules for the home. This is not everywhere yet and Texas is not California. Selling electricity back into the grid is generally much more rewarding in California than in Texas. What will make this very different is that green consumers (yes there are some environmentally conscious consumers in Texas) will get to avoid much of those extremely high start-up or install costs associated with buying solar panels to power a house. This is a potential game-changer for the Texas market and SolarCity may have rounded up yet another solid solar project here that makes solar power extremely affordable. The company’s PR form confirmed in an email that SolarCity offers the proven solar module technologies offered by Evergreen Solar Inc. (NASSDAQ: ESLR), First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) and Sanyo. Evergreen Solar is one of the oldest public solar stocks that has been stuck in the $1.00 arena forever and this one closed down this week.

Veolia Environnement SA (NYSE: VE) is generally thought of as specializing in waste and water, yet this week it launched the Veolia Innovation Accelerator as “a large-scale on-ramp program for the sourcing, deployment and acceleration of the best clean technologies, working with the most innovative start-up companies and investors in the sector.” The announcement at the Cleantech Forum XXVI said that the VIA
focus will include bio resources; drinking water; waste water; waste sorting, recycling and recovery; sustainable and green cities; energy generation and optimization; transportation; health and environmental performance; carbon capture and storage (CCS); and energy storage.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) this week did perhaps its biggest PR effort ever for the green movement. The company issued a press release announcing a goal of eliminating 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from Gits global supply chain via a collaboration with suppliers and environmental experts to develope, measure and independently assessment carbon reductions…. The target date: by 2015. The world’s largest retailer says this represents “one and a half times the company’s estimated global carbon footprint growth over the next five years and is the equivalent of taking more than 3.8 million cars off the road for a year.”

Bloom Energy this week emerged directly into the public demonstrating its solid oxide fuel cell technology that generates clean power on site from almost any fuel source. Technically this was not new as it has many anchor trial customers…. Bank of America, Coca-Cola, eBay, Google, Staples, Wal-Mart and more. This week marked the availability of its Bloom Energy Server™ for distributed power generation that allows customers to efficiently create electricity on site on a 24/7 basis using almost any sort of fuel in a clean electrochemical process. While these systems can cost $700K, the company believes a 40% to 100% carbon reduction and a 3 to 5 year payback timeframe is the result. Many reports issued praise this week, but many also question this as possible hype. Here is 24/7 Wall Street’s take… Bloom Energy is in the prep-stage for an IPO despite some mixed data there.

We have two small capital raises seen this morning in two alternative energy players. These are also classified as cult stocks due to their small size and trading history. Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW) is raising almost $10 million and Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) is raising almost $37 million in an offering. Normally these might be too small to have much care about. The difference here is that there are probably a couple dozen small alternative energy and green energy companies which have seen shares plummet from the 2008-craze highs and many of them need cash either for operations or for required listing standards.

Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW) has priced a public secondary offering of 13,229,500 shares of common stock at $0.75 per share to raise about $9,922,125. This one closed yesterday at $0.93 and shares are trading at $0.80 in the pre-market reaction. Thomas Weisel Partners LLC is acting as sole book-running manager of the offering. The market cap based on yesterday’s close was $61.8 million and the 52-week trading range is $0.46 to $1.50.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ: CPST) has entered into an underwriting agreement with Lazard Capital Markets as the sole book-running manager in a public offering of 38,095,239 shares of common stock. The deal priced at $1.05 per share versus a $1.24 close on Thursday. The net proceeds are expected to be approximately $36.8 million. The prior market cap based on yesterday’s close was $243 million. Before the open we have shares trading down 12% at $1.09 as this is a larger offering than what was originally expected.

If these deals are well received and do not overly punish the stocks, you can almost be certain that a dozen other small alternative energy companies will be out raising cash.
