Day traders and active traders have many movers this Wednesday morning to choose from. The top alerts were seen in Cardica, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRDC), DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS), Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAZZ), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), Oilsands Quest, Inc. (AMEX: BQI), Phoenix Technologies Lt. (NASDAQ: PTEC), and Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (NYSE: POT). We have compiled a brief news bite and the reaction on each.

Cardica, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRDC) is up nearly 45% at $2.41 on over 60,000 shares after signing a pact with Intuitive Surgical.

DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS) has been creeping higher in the mornings and we have shares up another 2% at $4.70 on over 35,000 shares. The 52-week trading range is $3.28 to $7.99 and average volume is close to 10 million shares.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAZZ) is up 14% at $11.70 on almost 100,000 shares after an application of its fibromyalgia candidate.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) lost some steam yesterday and shares are getting hit on a downgrade on valuation from Morgan Keegan. Shares closed at $132.97 yesterday and is down 2% at $130.25 on almost 50,000 shares.

Oilsands Quest, Inc. (AMEX: BQI) is surging after the company said it was reviewing strategic alternatives. Shares are up 18.6% at $0.61 on over 30,000 shares and the 52-week range is $0.49 to $1.69. Too bad it’s a penny stock.

Phoenix Technologies Lt. (NASDAQ: PTEC) is surging pre-market after announcing that it will be acquired by Marlin Equity Partners for $3.85 per share. Some may want more as the 52-week range is $2.02 to $4.19. Shares are up almost 26% at $3.80 on over 375,000 shares.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (NYSE: POT) is continuing yesterday’s surge with gains of 2.4% more to $146.65 on over 600,000 shares as the offer is now going hostile and after several analysts raised their price targets.

Cardica Adding U.S. to E.U. & Japan Sales (CRDC)

A usually quiet Cardica, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRDC) is seeing a huge move in its stock today on strong upside volume. The company has won FDA marketing approval to sell its PAS-Port Proximal Anastomosis System for use in cardiac bypass surgery. Normally stocks do not run up this much on the actual FDA approvals, but this one had been sold off and was already well off of recent highs.

The PAS-Port system creates a secure connection between a vein graftand the main artery in the human body during coronary artery bypassgrafting procedures. This system has been available in Japan and Europe. The company has noted thatit has been used more than 8,800 times. With the U.S. market now onboard, Cardica is probably going to see a surge in business. The system is used in about 20% of the applicable cases in Japan. The National Center for Health Statistics estimated that approximately 260,000 patients had CABG surgeriesin the United States in 2005. Cardica also noted that each CABGprocedure requires approximately five anastomoses, often considered themost critical step of the surgery.

The PAS-Port system allows surgeons to complete an automated procedureswithout the need to clamp and manipulate the aorta, which currentlycreates clotting or scarring.

The company conducted a 220-patient, prospective, pivotal,randomized trial of PAS-Port at 12 sites in the United States andEurope. The trial met all primary and secondary endpoints. Cardicasaid it plans on launching PAS-Port in the U.S. over the next severalweeks to surgeons and said it plans to train 50 to 60 surgeons perquarter.

This is one of the exponential winners today. Shares are up 33% at$10.70 and have already traded more than 950,000 shares so far in thefirst hour of the day. Its normal volume for an entire day is about137,000 shares and its 52-week trading range is $5.60 to $15.15. Evenafter today’s move, the company’s market cap is under $170 million.

Cardica Trumps Wall St.

Shares in Cardica (CRDC) fell of a cliff yesterday as an A.G. Edwards analyst downgraded the stock on muted enthusiasm for its new surgical product. The fellow must feel a bit embarrassed today.

CRDC shares are up over 20% today on news the company "received a key European approval for its new device for connecting blood vessels during heart bypass surgery," according to The Associated Press.

So there.

A True Believer Walks Out On Cardica

Medical device market Cardica (CRDC) hit a all-time high last Wednesday as a group of surgeons "successfully used its automated system during coronary artery bypass operations." It was not hundreds of surgeons in various locations. It was just two teams. One in Nashville and one in Richmond.

But, the shares jumped to $12.04, almost 3x their 52-week low. The company’s market cap got to almost $200 million. CRDC lost $12.1 million last year on $2 million in revenue.

This morning, A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. downgraded the shares from "buy" to "sell" "saying the company’s positive update last week was overblown on Wall Street," according to The Associated Press.

The analyst, probably with good reason, thinks that doctors will want to see more than a couple of operations. The stock is down 13% today to $8.60.
