(NYSE: NOK), Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM), H-P, and Disney to jump to the 8th most valuable brand.

Google’s brand value increased by 27%, the third largest gain among the top 100 brands. The second largest gain was posted by Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), which jumped 32% and moved up from 36th on the list to 26th.

The biggest loser was Nokia, which fell -15% and from 8th to 14th in the league table. Another smartphone maker, Samsung Electronics, moved up from 2 places, from 19th, on the strength of a 20% jump in brand value.

Toyota, ranked 11th, is the top automaker, barely ahead of Mercedes-Benz, with BMW in third. Among US carmakers only Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) made the top 100 with its ‘Ford’ brand, at 50th place behind Honda Motor Co. (NYSE: HMC) and Volkswagen.

Three brands made the list for the first time: Nissan, John Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE), and HTC Corp.

This coming week may be a shortened week for Thanksgiving, but there are still going to be some key earnings to watch. We have compiled a brief list of earnings we will be watching as market movers or sector movers.

We have earnings previews for the following: Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI); Brocade Communication Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BRCD); Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ); Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN); Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB); Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN); Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P); and Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE). Estimates are from Thomson Reuters and these are broken out by day.

Monday

Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI) has estimates of $0.64 EPS and $728.17 million in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.60 EPS and $707.37 million in revenue. With shares around $35.50, the 52-week range is $29.23 to $43.28.

Brocade Communication Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BRCD) is not a market mover but it is still way off its year high while some of its peers have been calling things better in their business of late. Estimates are $0.10 EPS and $527.38 million in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.11 EPS and $535.6 million in revenue.

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) is hardly even in the midst of a turnaround. Meg Whitman is still getting her hands around the business and Dell gave a mixed report of late. Estimates are $1.13 EPS and $32.06 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $1.11 EPS and $31.44 billion in revenue. We will be looking at the company’s comments around manufacturing problems for drives for its PC around the flooding in Thailand.

Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN) has estimates of $0.31 EPS and $8.19 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.39 EPS and $8.17 billion in revenue. At $19.50, its 52-week trading range is $15.46 to $20.12.

Tuesday

Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) has estimates of $0.79 EPS and $2.21 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.66 EPS and $2.16 billion in revenue. Shares are right at $33.50 and the 52-week range is $29.69 to $35.66. This one in the middle of a strategy change to get back to more flavorful soups and away from being such low-salt.

Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) is also set for Tuesday and the speech-to-text software leader’s estimates are $0.41 EPS and $393.33 million in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.38 EPS and $378.78 million in revenue. At $24.00, the 52-week trading range is $15.56 to $26.97.

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) is still kicking around after its IPO. The online music playing company has estimates of -$0.01 EPS and $71.44 million in revenue; next quarter estimates are -$0.03 EPS and $82.25 million in revenue. Its stock is around $12.55 and the post-IPO range has been $9.33 to $26.00.

Wednesday

Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE) has estimates of $1.43 EPS and $7.87 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $1.26 EPS and $6.17 billion in revenue. At 74.50, Deere has a 52-week range of $59.92 to $99.80.

Stocks opened higher this morning and the gains held up pretty well all day. The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee report contained no big surprises, with interest rates continuing to be held between 0%-0.25%. The dollar is a bit weaker, leading to a small rise in oil and commodity stocks. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke’s prepared remarks were issued prior to his press conference, and the Fed has lowered its estimate of US economic growth for the year from 2.7%-2.9% to 1.6%-1.7%. The growth forecast for 2012 has also been trimmed, from 3.3%-3.7% to 2.5%-2.9%.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly more than 177 points to 11,835.74 (1.52%), the NASDAQ rose more than 33 points (1.27%) to 2,639.98, and the S&P 500 rose 1.61% or more than 19 points to 1,237.89.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including American Water Works (NYSE: AWK) added to Zack’s Strong Buy List. Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) and JP Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) cut to ‘hold’ at S&P Capital IQ; Caterpillar Corp. (NYSE: CAT) started at ‘overweight’ at Morgan Stanley; Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE) started at ‘underweight’ at Morgan Stanley; and Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO) reiterated ‘buy’ at Argus with a price target of $35.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Phoenix Companies Inc. (NYSE: PNX) up more than 27%, at $1.73; Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. (NYSE: NOR) is up more than 21%, at $10.44; hhgregg, Inc. (NYSE: HGG) up more than 16%, at $14.09; Career Education Corp. (NASDAQ: CECO) is down nearly -467%, at $8.38, a new 52-week low; Endeavor International Corp. (NYSE: END) is down nearly -14%, at $7.66; and Vonage Holding Corp. (NYSE: VG) is down about -15%, at $2.65.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Career Education Corp., in addition to posting an awful quarterly report, also got hit by the resignation of the company’s CEO. Shares are down more than -47%, at $8.38, to give the shares a new range of $8.68-$27.60.

Amyris Corp. (NASDAQ: AMRS) is down more than -20%, at $15.41, having posted a new 52-week low earlier to give the stock a new range of $15.21-$33.99. The company’s earnings report revealed an EPS loss of -$0.97, much worse than expected. Shares were downgraded by Robert Baird from ‘outperform’ to ‘neutral’.

Diamond Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) is down more than -17%, at $53.01, in a 52-week range of $43.14-$96.13. The company’s board is reviewing how walnut growers are being paid and will delay the annual report into next year. The company’s deal to by Pringles snack foods from Proctor & Gamble (NYSE: PG) could be in jeopardy because the company planned to use stock to make the acquisition.

Sino-Global America Shipping, Ltd. (NASDAQ: SINO) is up more than 81%, at $3.05, in a 52-week range of $1.20-$9.16. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with a South African firm to act as Sino’s agent in that country. In shipping these days, any positive signal is a rare treat.

Oxigene, Inc. (NASDAQ: OXGN) is up nearly 12%, at $1.69, in a 52-week range of $0.82-$6.38. The company has set its third-quarter earnings release for next week, and investors are expecting good news on the company’s drug development efforts.

Rentech, Inc. (AMEX: RTK) is up about 21%, at $1.95, a new 52-week high, and a new 52-week trading range of $0.72-$1.95. The company continues to get a boost from the IPO of its spin-off of Rentech Nitrogen Partners, L.P. (NYSE: RNF).

Excluding the impacts of absorbing its recent acquisition of Bucyrus International, Inc., Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) posted an all-time high in sales, revenue, and profits in the third quarter. Even with those impacts, Caterpillar managed to beat handily consensus estimates of revenue and profit. And the company expects to post revenue and profit at the high end of its previous estimates, even including the impact of the acquisition.Analysts were expecting EPS of $1.55 on revenue of $15.03 billion. Including Bucyrus, the company posted EPS of $1.71 on revenue of $15.72. Excluding Bucyrus, EPS came in at $1.93 on revenue of $14.58 billion.

Caterpillar has set a high bar for Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE), Joy Global Inc. (NASDAQ: JOYG), CNH Global NV (NYSE: CNH), and AGCO Corp. (NASDAQ: AGCO). Deere, which does not close its quarter until the end of November, is expected to post EPS of $1.43 on $7.83 billion in revenue. Joy Global’s quarter ends this month, and estimates are EPS of $1.86 on revenue of $1.35 billion. CNH reports earnings on Thursday, and consensus estimates call for EPS of $0.82 on revenue of $4.2 billion. AGCO reports earnings tomorrow and is expected to post EPS of $0.76 on revenue of $2.02 billion.

Looking ahead, Caterpillar raised its revenue guidance from $56-$58 billion to $58 billion, including about $2 billion from Bucyrus. EPS guidance was changed from $6.25-$6.75 to $6.75, including a negative impact of about $0.50 from the Bucyrus deal. The company hailed the recent passage of three free-trade agreements and “the growing understanding that we need to do something positive about infrastructure in the United States.” Needless to say, Caterpillar hopes to profit from both.

For 2012, Caterpillar continues to be optimistic. The company expects sales and revenues to increase by 10%-20%, much of which will come from Bucyrus. Caterpillar expects Bucyrus to boost total sales by about $5 billion next year. The company did not provide EPS guidance for 2012.

Of the company’s $1.14 billion in profit, more than 30% was attributed to a favorable exchange rate. The weaker US dollar clearly helped the company in the third quarter, but as the dollar gains strength profits could slow down. The company also reported weaker sales in China, and noted that sales rose in developed countries although total sales of new machines in developed countries “remain significantly below previous peak levels.”

Order backlog has climbed to an all-time high, and the company expects commodity prices to remain high enough to maintain current investment levels from Caterpillar’s customers. In developed countries, Caterpillar believes that deferred replacement of equipment will pick up modestly, while in developing countries the company expects more construction activity to drive additional sales. If sales in China continue to weaken, that may be a tough goal to reach.

Shares of Caterpillar are up about 5% a half hour before the market opens this morning, at $91.65 in a 52-week range of $67.54-$116.55. Deere is up more than 2.5%, at $74.10 in a 52-week range of $59.92-$99.80. Joy Global is up about 2.8%, at $84.10, in a 52-week range of $57.48-$103.44.

While the debate rages over whether or not the U.S. should enact legislation aimed to curb currency manipulation — and specifically the Chinese peg to the U.S. dollar — the impact of such legislation has been made abundantly clear by the Chinese government. China has, in effect, said that the enactment of the currency manipulation bill now being debated in the U.S. Senate would lead to an all-out trade war between the U.S. and China, reminiscent of the trade wars following the Smoot-Hawley tariffs of the 1930s.

Which U.S. industries and companies stand to get hit the hardest in the event a trade war gets started? The U.S. Census Bureau provides data on the dollar amounts of U.S. imports from and exports to China that we have looked at to see where the impacts could be the largest.

According the Census Bureau data, in 2010 the U.S. imported goods from China worth about $365 billion, while exporting goods worth about $92 billion. If the U.S. were to implement tariffs on imports, the likeliest targets would be the goods with the largest dollar value. These imports include computer, semiconductors and telecom gear worth about $88 billion in 2010, clothing and other household goods worth an aggregate of about $71 billion, toys and similar items worth about $27 billion, televisions and other video equipment worth about $15 billion.

If all that sounds like the stuff you can buy at Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) or Target (NYSE: TGT) or any number of other U.S. department stores, then be prepared to pay more for these items. Because comparatively little clothing or TVs or toys are manufactured in the U.S. any longer, an import duty on these items would hurt U.S. consumers without providing a lot of help to U.S. manufacturers. Hopes that a new manufacturing segment might spring up are not likely to be realized among large companies but smaller manufacturers could gain some benefit.

However, if China responds with import tariffs of its own, several major U.S. industries could get seriously hurt. Raw materials exports such as coal, copper, iron ore, lumber, and other metals are particularly vulnerable. So are agricultural products like soybeans, cotton, and corn. Industrial and agricultural machinery exports could also face penalties. Another substantial U.S. export is automobiles.

Coal miners like Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) and Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI) could get hit, as could copper miners Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO). Lumber companies Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY) and Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL) could face higher duties on log exports.

Agricultural products companies such as Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM) and Bunge (NYSE: BG) could be in China’s sights if duties are applied to food exports. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) and Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE) are likely to see prices for their equipment rise with a concomitant loss of sales to competitors from Japan and Korea.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Ford Motor (NYSE: F) both look to China as a growth opportunity. In 2010 U.S. car sales in China totaled more than $3 billion. Slapping a tariff on U.S. cars could really chill the hopes of the U.S. automakers. General Electric (NYSE: GE) could also face tariffs on industrial engines and parts, as well as aircraft parts and other equipment.

China has been fighting inflation for most of this year by restricting bank lending and raising interest rates. Absent a significant currency adjustment, this does little good for the global economy and not much long-term good for China’s domestic economy. If the yuan were allowed to float freely, it could appreciate by as much as 30%. That would quickly eliminate the inflation threat in China, bringing the cost of the country’s goods more into line with foreign costs, slowing the country’s exports, and giving other economies a chance to fill the gap and begin growing again.

But that outcome does not appear likely. Instead, China appears willing to fight the Senate legislation with a trade war. The war of words is likely to last well into next year, but the first real shot is already being primed.
