The three major US equities indexes opened higher this morning following an assurance from China’s central bank that it would continue to hold European sovereign debt and to participate in finding a resolution to the Eurozone’s debt crisis. Iran has said that it is stopping crude oil shipments to six European countries (our story here). In the first half hour of trading, the DJIA has turned negative, down about 12 points at around 12,867, the Nasdaq Composite is higher by about 12 points at around 2,944, and the S&P 500 is up about 3 points at around 1,354.

There are several stocks trading more heavily than usual this morning, and also experiencing large gains or drops in share prices. These include the Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSE: TAN), Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHIP), Dean Foods Co. (NYSE: DF), Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE: VG), Znyga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA), and Wellcare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG).

The Guggenheim Solar ETF completed a 1:10 reverse split this morning, causing some issues with online finance sites. We have more coverage here.

Seanergy is up nearly 22% at $3.55. Volume is already about 10x the daily average of about 18,000 shares traded. The dry bulk shipper reported an unexpected profit this morning.

Dean Foods is up nearly 13% at $12.25. Volume is already 150% of the daily average of 1.9 million shares traded. The food and beverage company posted better-than-expected earnings this morning and offered guidance in-line with expectations.

Vonage is down more than -12% at $2.40 after posting a new 52-week low of $2.38 earlier. Volume is already approaching double the daily average of about 550,000 shares traded. The Internet phone company reported in-line fourth-quarter revenues and earning, but projected higher expenses in 2012.

Zynga is down nearly -12% at $12.65. Volume is already higher than the daily average of around 14 million shares traded. The social gaming company posted better-than-expected earnings this morning, but the forecast for the current quarter was weak and several analysts downgraded the stock.

Wellcare is up more than 11% at $70.13 after posting a new 52-week high of $71.54 earlier this morning. Volume is already double the daily average of about 510,000 shares traded. The managed care provider beat earnings expectations this morning and provided a better-than-expected forecast for 2012.

Each morning 24/7 Wall St. issues a summary list of key analyst upgrades, downgrades, and initiations issued by Wall Street research firms. We review these calls and other calls made throughout the week to see which stand out the most. Some are great calls that were full of insight, while others were total flops. After reviewing and filtering all of these research reports, we end up with the top analyst calls of the week.

We had many key calls that stood out this week in shares of the following: Alcatel-Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU); Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN); Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL); Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO); Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC); Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE:CXW); Dean Foods Company (NYSE: DF); Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE: EPD); Genworth Financial Inc. (NYSE: GNW); Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR); Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN); The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD); Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: MPEL); Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (NYSE: PIR); SurModics Inc. (NASDAQ: SRDX); Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NASDAQ: TEVA); Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX); and YRC Worldwide. Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW).

We have broken each of these calls out and added in color where applicable.

Alcatel-Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU) can’t get off the floor and it keeps disappointing. Shares even closed at $1.99 after seeing a year low of $1.92 on Friday. Alcatel’s chart looks almost the same as the chart of late-2008, but it cannot blame the market this time. We saw three downgrades worth noting this last week: Cut to Sell at Citigroup; Cut estimates and target at Argus; and Cut to Neutral at BofA/Merrill Lynch.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) had two big calls this last week. The main call was on Friday when Nomura issued a very unenthusiastic NEUTRAL rating. The other call came on Thursday when Zacks added it to the STRONG SELL list. With valuations still very high and with profit margins running razor-thin, it seems that at least some caution should prevail unless the holiday season is going to blow the doors of the hinges here.

We have been searching for deep value stocks of late now that the market sell-off has taken out a large bite from the value of many major companies. Some analysts group food differently than beverages, but our screen includes all of the following to identify the best value: Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB); The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO); ConAgra Foods, Inc. (NYSE: CAG); Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE: DPS); General Mills, Inc. (NYSE: GIS); Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL); Kellogg Company (NYSE: K); Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT); Pepsico, Inc. (NYSE: PEP); Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN); and Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD).

We are looking at food and beverages separately today in identifying the best value for investors looking for safe havens in the storm. This sector is already very defensive in nature, and we found that the defensive sector of consumer products actually has a market premium due to investors seeking safety. The good news is that the food and beverage sector has a few differences.

Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) recently traded at $30.85 and its market cap is $10 billion. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $29.69 to $36.99. The current value is trading at a price-to-book ratio of about 9 to 1. Its forward price earnings multiple is 12.2 and its return on equity is 78.8%. The canned soup company currently pays a dividend yield of about 3.8% to investors. Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target of $34.00, implying roughly 10.2% upside to the most recent price. Campbell is under a new CEO and undergoing some change. It is hard to imagine that this is a luxury good or a health food group stock, but the company has been under fire from private-label soups in the past and it is now going to add more salt and flavors to regain some market share. Due to the correction, there is almost a turnaround element here.

The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) recently traded at $69.37 and its market cap is $159 billion. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $56.01 to $71.77. The current value is trading at a price-to-book ratio of about 4.5 to 1. Its forward price earnings multiple is 16.1 and its return on equity is 41.29%. The beverage giant currently pays a dividend yield of 2.71% to investors. Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target of $77.86, implying roughly 12.2% upside to the most recent price. What is so interesting about Coca-Cola is that it just the magic 52-week high list right after Labor Day. Coke and water, you gotta drink! This is a huge position for Warren Buffett, but chances are that it will be that way in a decade from now (or for his successor).

(NYSE: HUM), Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE: ADM), Coach, Inc. (NYSE: COH), DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS), Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK), OpenTable, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPEN), Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE: PFE), Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI), American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), Clorox Company (NYSE: CLX), Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA), Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN), Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. (NYSE: WFR), Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), Zipcar, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZIP), American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE: CVS), Dean Foods Company (NYSE: DF), First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT), LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD), Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ: PCLN), Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV), and Procter & Gamble Company (The) (NYSE: PG).

We have given previews using Thomson Reuters Consensus data, shown price ranges, trading ranges, shown a Thomson Reuters analyst consensus price target, and added in color on most companies.

MONDAY

Chimera Investment Corporation (NYSE: CIM) has estimates of $0.15 EPS and $175.58 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.14 EPS and $173.62 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $3.09, the 52-week trading range is $2.62 to $4.36 and the consensus price target from analysts is $4.18. Chimera is not going to be a market mover, but it will highlight some of the issues facing the leveraged MBS REIT players. Will it be able to maintain what was recently tallied up as being nearly 17% on an annualized basis. Per its REIT status, Chimera is required to distribute at least 90% of its REIT taxable income to shareholders.

Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) has estimates of $2.06 EPS and $9.32 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $1.97 EPS and $9.21 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $74.38, the 52-week trading range is $45.36 to $84.32 and the consensus price target from analysts is $88.22. Humana will follow three other healthcare insurers in earnings, and so far it is UnitedHealth which has hit highs and is so far winning the race this earnings season.

TUESDAY

Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) has estimates of $0.85 EPS and $20.43 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.76 EPS and $18.33 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $30.74, the 52-week trading range is $26.50 to $38.02 and the consensus price target from analysts is $38.71. The saga continues for ADM. With a $20 billion market cap this would still have to run 50% to challenge the old agriculture and energy highs seen in 2008.

Coach, Inc. (NYSE: COH) has estimates of $0.65 EPS and $1.01 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.69 EPS and $1.00 billion in revenues. Shares are trading around $64.50, the 52-week trading range is $35.06 to $69.20 and the consensus price target from analysts is $67.52. Coach is one company that investors will use as a proxy for luxury or at least “above the middle of the pack” when it comes to previewing retail earnings that are about two weeks or three weeks out. The purse and apparel accessories giant is actually worth a whopping $19 billion in market cap now. Coach’s guidance could signal the trend of things to come in the higher-end and above the middle retail segment.

DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS) has estimates of $0.18 EPS and $270.74 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.21 EPS and $320.2 million in revenues. Shares are trading around $3.75, the 52-week trading range is $3.56 to $6.44 and the consensus price target from analysts is $6.25. DryShips does not run the market and it does not even really influence other shippers. The Greek aspect cannot be helping matters, but it is now in the midst of an acquisition after having been a serial capital raising company. The concerns actually have this one close to 52-week lows and it is not unusual to see massive volume spikes when DryShips has news.

24/7 Wall St. has been conducting reviews looking for value stocks now that the market has softened. Looking solely for “cheap stocks” on book value is very incomplete, so we have taken earnings growth, dividends, return on equity, and analyst data to create more of a complete review on these companies. Consumer Goods is perhaps a very broad sector which could easily be broken into many more sub-sectors, but we identified 11 companies with standout price to book values.

In alphabetical order of their ticker symbols: Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY); Bemis Company, Inc. (NYSE: BMS); Dean Foods Co. (NYSE: DF); Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI); Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT); Leggett & Platt, Incorporated (NYSE: LEG); Newell Rubbermaid Inc. (NYSE: NWL); Phillips-Van Heusen Corp. (NYSE: PVH); Rock-Tenn Co. (NYSE: RKT); Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE: SEE); and, Xerox Corp. (NYSE: XRX).

Price to book values range from Xerox’s 1.1 to Johnson Controls’ 2.4. Even though we identified these companies in searching for attractive price to book values, every one of them offers respectable next-year earnings growth. Analysts expect next-year earnings expansion ranging from Newell Rubbermaid’s 10.6% to Rock-Tenn’s 39%. All sport forward PE multiples below 14. Forward PE’s range from Xerox Corp’s 8.1 to Kraft Foods’ 13.9.

Seven of the eleven companies boast an implied upside price expansion exceeding 20%, based on current share prices versus consensus price targets. Leggett & Platt, Newell Rubbermaid, Xerox and Johnson Controls lead the rest with implied price expansions ranging from more than 27% to close to 31%. Each of these eleven companies has an average daily trading volume exceeding 750,000 shares. Except where otherwise noted, the source for all performance and financial data is Finviz.com.

Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY) has a price to book value near 2.3 to 1. The company’s market cap is just less than $4 billion giving it a middle-of-the-pack rank among these companies. Its forward PE is about 10.2. With a consensus target price of $46.71, the shares have an implied upside exceeding 25%. Shares of Avery Dennison closed Friday at $37.19, down 1.56%. The 52-week price range is $30.54 to $43.26. This outfit that makes labels and other office products recently took a downgrade to “Neutral” at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. It pays a nice dividend with a yield of close to 2.7% and shares were above $60 back in 2007 before the recession.

Bemis Company, Inc. (NYSE: BMS) has a price to book value of 1.8 to 1. The company’s market cap is just less than $3.4 billion. Its forward PE is near 12.5. With a consensus target price of $34.89, the shares have an implied upside of 8.6% among the lowest of these companies. Bemis Company shares closed Friday at $32.11, down 0.43. The 52-week price range is $25.79 to $33.57. The packaging materials company also has a respectable dividend yield of about 3%, even if Goldman Sachs did downgrade the rating to “Sell” in recent weeks..

Dean Foods Co. (NYSE: DF) boasts a price to book value of 1.4 to 1, ranking it second among these companies. The company’s market cap is $2.2 billion, the smallest of these companies. Its forward PE is near 13.2, among the highest on this list. With a consensus target price of $13.50, the shares have an implied upside 12.5%. In Friday trading Dean Foods closed at $12.00, down 1.80% for the day. The 52-week trading range is $7.13 to $13.90. This milk and dairy producer has been in recovery mode. It made this screen even after a recovery of more than 75% from the bottom. In 2007, shares were worth more than $40.00.

Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI) has a price to book value of 2.4 to 1, a comparatively high price to book value ratio among these companies. With a market cap exceeding $26 billion, Johnson Controls is the second largest company ranked here. Its forward PE is a tad greater than 12. After robust expansion of earnings for the current year, analysts expect next-year earnings expansion exceeding 34%. With a consensus target price of $48.50, the shares have an implied upside of 23.8%. Shares of Johnson Controls closed Friday at $39.17, unchanged. The 52-week price range is $25.63 to $42.35. The car parts and systems manufacturer is one of the few which pay a dividend (about 1.6%) and this one has recovered mightily from the recession lows when shares fell to well under $10.00.

Each morning during the week we publish the top analyst upgrades and downgrades that we see in the market. After looking deeper through the calls individually, there are always some critical research notes that are either very insightful or that have very peculiar observations or that have extreme price target objectives. This week we identified six such research calls from analysts. Those calls were in shares of Alkermes, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALKS), Apollo Global Management, LLC (NYSE: APO), Dean Foods Co. (NYSE: DF), E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC), Penson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ: PNSN), and in SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA).

Alkermes, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALKS) had a game-changing week after it is now going to be profit-oriented after its ELAN Corp. plc (NYSE: ELN) deal was announced this week. We have seen analysts chime in about what this means. Cowen raised it to Outperform and Leerink Swann raised it to Outperform. We expect more positive calls next week as it reports earnings. The close the prior Friday was $14.47 and the close this Friday was $17.76 after closing up each day of the week. Our more detailed analysis is available at BioHealthInvestor.com.

Apollo Global Management, LLC (NYSE: APO) has been public for just over a month and its quiet period ended for research analysts. This was trading under its IPO price yet all but only one analyst at Wells Fargo was cautious with a “Market Perform” rating. All of the other calls were “Buy/Outperform/Overweight.” The initial move went from $17.97 the prior Friday and then the shares (units) rose to $18.50 on Monday and then to $18.71 by Tuesday. Unfortunately, shares closed at $18.27 on Friday so this remains a pressured IPO.

Dean Foods Co. (NYSE: DF) was raised to “Buy” at Goldman Sachs on Friday after earnings this week. More importantly, Goldman Sachs said that Dean Foods could actually double over the next two years. What makes this call stand out even more is Dean Foods has already almost doubled from its lows of the last year. In 2007, this milk and dairy company’s stock traded north of $40.00. The stock closed at $13.41 this week after earnings, up more than 20% from the close of $10.97 the prior Friday.

E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC) was given two calls in its favor this week. The turnaround online broker raised to Buy at Goldman Sachs with a $19 price target early this week. Then came another upgrade to “Strong Buy” from “Outperform” at Raymond James. These calls fit in a bit with our take that goes back to last year and even in 2009… E*TRADE will be acquired. Now its turnaround is finally producing positive earnings and the company’s writedowns and charge-offs are getting to the point where there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That light does not even look like it is a freight train. These calls had limited price impact as the close a week earlier was $15.92 and the close on this Friday was $16.06.

Penson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ: PNSN) got what will feel like a very bad call this week. One analyst downgrade came from Sandler O’Neill maintaining a “Hold” rating but cutting the target to $4.50 from $5.50. It could be inferred that the research call started the move when shares were getting clobbered this last week, but our take is that the call exacerbated the move on issues tied to charges on a municipal bond issue. Whether the call was the catalyst or just an accelerating factor is arguable as the issue has been there before, but the move was extreme. Shares were at $5.35 the Friday before, and the stock hit a low of $2.73 before the company issued clarification news. The good news is that shares had recovered to $3.34 by Friday’s close, making a recovery bounce of some 22%. We’ll have to see if other firms can support the company this coming week.

SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA) was supposed to be a game-changing stake as a near-merger with Total when that stake was recently taken. That created a move up from about $16 to $21 when it came about. At the end of the week we saw two very negative calls … SunPower was maintained as “Sell” at Auriga and it was downgraded to “Hold” at ThinkEquity. Instead of rising, SunPower had a stagnant week. It closed at $21.41 a week earlier and closed at $21.23 for roughly a 1% loss this last week.
