Best Stocks to Buy from Raymond James Analyst Picks, Value Stocks and Dividends

At the beginning of this year, we gave our readers an overview of the top stock picks for the year from various firms around Wall Street. After a tremendous run in the stock markets, we were interested to see what the top names to buy at major firms were as the first-quarter earnings parade starts to wind down.

One firm that is keeping a bullish bias is Raymond James Financial Inc. (NYSE: RJF). Chief equity strategist Jeffrey Saut was an unwavering bull and stuck to his guns, while many other firms started calling for major corrections in March and early April. We looked through the “Analysts Favorite Picks” for top stocks to buy in multiple sectors.

Health Care: UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) operates as a diversified health and well-being company in the United States. The Raymond James price objective is $70. The Thomson/First Call estimate is also $70. Investors are paid a 1.40% dividend.

Energy: Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: APC) tops the list at Raymond James and other top Wall Street firms. Anadarko late Monday reported first-quarter earnings of $1.08 a share, compared with analysts’ estimates of $0.93. First-quarter production came in higher than expected, thanks to a 9% on-quarter production increase at Wattenberg fields and a 5% increase from East Texas assets. The Raymond James target is $105, but the consensus estimate is at $104.

Energy/oil-field services: Ocean Rig UDW Inc. (NASDAQ: ORIG) is the stock to buy. This ultra-deepwater driller may be poised for a big breakout as earnings are expected to jump dramatically next year. The Raymond James price objective is $20. The consensus actually is higher at $21.

Consumer/hardline retail: The Fresh Market Inc. (NASDAQ: TFM) has sold off hard since its high last August and may be a compelling stock to buy at these levels. Raymond James has a $50 target, while the consensus estimate is at $48.50.

Consumer/leisure: Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG), the iconic American motorcycle company, is a top stock to buy. The Raymond James target price is $62. Consensus estimates are at $62.50. Investors receive a 1.50% dividend.

Technology: Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE: JBL) is a leader in electronic manufacturing services. This is another stock that may be way oversold. Raymond James has a $24 target. The consensus estimate is the same, and investors receive a 1.80% dividend.

Transportation: Kansas City Southern (NYSE: KSU) operates north/south rail routes between Kansas City, Mo., and various ports along the Gulf of Mexico in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas in the Midwest and southeast regions of the United States. The Raymond James target price is $123. The consensus is much lower at $106.

Financial services/capital markets: MarketAxess Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: MKTX) delivered a profit, beat Wall Street’s expectations, and topped revenue expectations. Providing a competitive electronic platform for institutional fixed income trading has sent revenues soaring. The Raymond James target is $47. The consensus target for the stock is lower at $41. Investors receive a 1.20% dividend.

Real estate/REITs: Digital Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE: DLR) is a favorite of Jim Cramer. Through its controlling interest in Digital Realty Trust L.P., the company engages in the ownership, acquisition, development, redevelopment and management of technology-related real estate. Raymond James has a $78 price target. The consensus is lower at $72. Investors are paid a solid 4.60% dividend.

Investors would have done well by following Raymond James bullish bias when others were turning negative. The top picks at the firm are all names that are increasing earnings and giving positive forward guidance. That is often a winning combination for stock picking.

Fortinet Inc. (NASDAQ: FTNT) lowered guidance and shares are down 17%. It was downgraded to the equivalent of Neutral or Hold by BofA/Merrill Lynch, Needham, Wells Fargo and perhaps other firms.

Kraft Foods Inc. (NASDAQ: KRFT) started as Market Perform at Wells Fargo.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) cut to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs (FULL SUMMARY) and cut to Neutral from Buy at Nomura.

Mondelez International Inc. (NASDAQ: MDLZ) started as Outperform at Wells Fargo.

Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) maintained Buy with $90 target price but lowered earnings estimates ahead of earnings at Argus.

Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL) raised to Neutral from Negative at Susquehanna.

Under Armour Inc. (NYSE: UA) reiterated Outperform and raised target to $64 from $60 at Credit Suisse.

Jefferies raised its targets and estimates on many Big Pharma stocks.

Merrill Lynch sees upside earnings surprises from these eight large companies during earnings season.

Argus made many big changes in its model portfolios today.

Opportunistic Yet Leveraging Secondary Offering From Digital Realty (DLR)

Digital Realty Trust (NYSE: DLR) has been one of those REITs we have loved for some time, but one where we feel the price has grown too excessive. Now the company which we call “The Landlord of the Cloud” is planning to sell 8.25 million shares of its common stock in an underwritten public secondary offering. What is interesting is that the company intends to contribute the net proceeds from this offering to its operating partnership, Digital Realty Trust, L.P., to fund a portion of the purchase price for the acquisition of a three-property data center portfolio located in the greater London area. This area is the Sentrum Portfolio and the purchase price is roughly $1.1 billion to be paid for by this offering and from cash on hand and additional debt and a bridge loan.

Digital Realty also said that it may temporarily repay debt under its global revolving credit facility, or it can acquire additional properties, fund development and redevelopment opportunities, or for general working capital purposes.

BofA Merrill Lynch and Citigroup are the joint book-running managers for the offering.

This offering would bring in more than $580 million in gross proceeds at the closing price of $73.25 and the 52-week range is $50.63 to $76.04 and its market capitalization is just over $8 billion. Maybe this will finally take the price down to a more attractive level. Still, this transaction is being paid for by an issuance of about 7% as well as leveraging up more debt.

Markets opened higher this morning after positive news on new unemployment benefits claims and manufacturing (more coverage here). Indexes have risen more or less steadily all day, with the S&P set to close above 1,400 for the first time since June 2008. The US dollar index is weaker today, down -0.50% at 80.165. Most commodities rose on the dollar weakness, with the notable exception of crude oil. WTI crude oil closed down -0.3% at $105.11/barrel, and Brent crude trades down -1.52% at $122.69/barrel. Gold settled up 1% today, at $1,659.50.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 58 points to 13,252.76 (0.44%), the NASDAQ rose more than 15 points (0.51%) to 3,056.37, and the S&P 500 rose 0.60% or more than 8 points to 1,402.59.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Norfolk Southern Corp. (NYSE: NSC) cut to ‘equal weight’ at Barclays; Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ: DNDN) started as ‘hold’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Ebay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) cut to ‘neutral’ at Credit Suisse; Celgene Corp. (NASDAQ: CELG) started as ‘buy’ at Stifel Nicolaus; and Digital Realty Trust (NYSE: DLR) cut to ‘hold’ at Jefferies.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Abraxas Petroleum Corp. (NASDAQ: AXAS) is down -4.6% at $3.55; AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AMCX) is down -4% at $44.18; Cato Corp. (NYSE: CATO) is down -0.2% at $27.51; ENI S.p.A. (NYSE: E) is up 1.1% at $47.89; FutureFuel Corp. (NYSE: FF) is up 1.4% at $11.53; Ross Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: ROST) is down -0.5% at $56.31; and Travelcenters of America LLC (AMEX: TA) is up 15% at $6.10.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Euro Tech Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CLWT) is up 55% at $4.50. The Chinese water treatment company has been awarded two new contracts.

Towerstream Corp. (NASDAQ: TWER) is up nearly 42% at $3.69. The 4G wireless provider reported better-than-expected earnings after markets closed yesterday.

Aixtron SE (NASDAQ: AIXG) is up more than 18% at $131. The LED maker is getting a boost from an analyst’s upgrade. More coverage here.

Winnebago Industries Inc. (NYSE: WGO) is up about 16% at $10.32. The recreational vehicle maker missed estimates this morning, but reported a strong order backlog.

Coffee Holding Co. Inc. (NASDAQ: JVA) is up more than 15% at $13.73. The coffee wholesaler continues to attract buying on its strong earnings report last week.

Scholastic Corp. (NASDAQ: SCHL) is up more than 14% at $36.89 after posting a new 52-week high of $40.17 earlier today. The children’s media company raised its 2012 guidance.

Flamel Technologies SA (NASDAQ: FLML) is down nearly -23% at $6.18. The French-based biopharmaceutical company has acquired Eclat Pharmaceuticals and Eclat’s CEO will take over the combined company.

Verso Paper Corp. (NYSE: VRS) is down nearly -13% at $1.77. The paper firm is giving back last week’s gains as its tender offer had to be extended.

Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (NASDAQ: EGLE) is down more than -12% at $1.58. The dry bulk shipper reported a narrower-than-expected loss yesterday, but shipping companies still face a terrible year.

Vringo Inc. (AMEX: VRNG) is down more than -11% at $1.63. The social networking software company is merging with Innovate/Protect Inc. See the press release for details.

A123 Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) was a highly influential call from a firm not very well known. The battery maker was downgraded on fears that Fiskar will not be able to keep buying from them. This fell 23% after it was cut to Sell at Wunderlich, but the price target was the real kicker: $0.50. Ouch.

Alcatel-Lucent S.A. (NYSE: ALU) was sure a wrong-way call of the week. The perpetually turning-around communications equipment maker was downgraded to ‘Sell’ at S&P Equity Research ahead of earnings and the stock closed up almost 13% at $2.19 on Friday.

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) was inadvertently a really bad call because it got caught up in a weak stock market day and got caught on a day when alternative energy players took it on the chin. This one was raised to ‘Buy’ at Citigroup on Friday and closed don over 8% at $5.11 after opening at $5.36 on the day. Oops.

Annaly Capital Management Inc. (NYSE: NLY) had a rough week based in part on a mortgage foreclosure settlement. We expect the debate to continue over the real impact, but this high dividend yield mortgage REIT was downgraded to ‘Market Perform’ and the price target was cut to $16.00 from $17.50 by Friedman, Billings & Ramsey this last week.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) keeps hitting new all-time highs each day. Apparently it is going to keep doing that for quite some time if Canaccord Genuity gets its way. That firm listed many reasons to raise it price target to $665 this last week.

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) was better than what we feel the street gave it credit for on earnings. Credit Suisse only reiterated an ‘Outperform’ rating ahead of earnings, but what stood out was the $26.00 price target because that is about $4.50 higher than the consensus price target and that is also close to where the stock petered out in 2010.

Coach, Inc. (NYSE: COH) may be gutsy and may be an afterthought. It was recently given a strong tout by CNBC’s Jim Cramer as his luxury stock of choice, but on Friday it was raised started as ‘Buy’ with a target of $85 at Citigroup. This came on a day when the stock hit an all time high and closed at $74.54.

Coinstar, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSTR) is already up big over the last week, but we have never really considered it just as a value stock. Don’t tell that Zacks… On Friday it was named as Zacks’ Value Stock of the Day.
