The month of October was a solid month for stocks, one of the best months of our lifetimes. We have two groups today and the first is the stocks which rose the most in the S&P 500 Index from the end of September to the end of October. The moves were more than impressive and the top ten had to rise more than 36% to even be in the screen from Capital IQ.

The SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) rose by 10.9%. but the gain from trough to peak was far more. We have offered some color on each and shown how much implied upside is there to the Thomson Reuters consensus analyst price target as well. These gainers are listed lowest to highest on a percentage basis for the month.

Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR) rose by 36.5% as shares rose from $11.50 to $15.70. Analysts have a consensus price target of $24.40. The company acquires and develops oil and gas properties in the Gulf Coast states. The company announced a $500 million share buyback during October, but it also announced that its President & COO has left the company.

Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO) saw a 38.4% gain as the stock rose from $17.78 at the end of September to $24.60 at the end of October. Analysts have a consensus price target of $31.50. Valero was the subject of buyout speculation and its shares have not really sold off after word came that one rumored acquirer was not looking o acquire it.

National Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV) saw a 39.3% rise from $51.22 at the end of September to $71.33 at October’s end. Analysts have a consensus price target of $89.75. If the offshore oil market is going to be opened back up, having a an offshore rig manufacturing business is going to be robust again.

Joy Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: JOYG) saw a gain of 39.8% from $62.38 on September 30 up to $87.20 at the end of October. Analysts have a consensus price target of $102.00.

Juniper Networks, Inc. NYSE: JNPR) rose by 41.8% in October $24.47 versus $17.26. The turnaround in networking is being seen in the stock. Analysts have a consensus price target of $25.03. Juniper has risen off of lows just as many other networking equipment players have seen.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (NYSE: GT) rolled on and on for a 42.3% gain as shares went from $10.09 at the end of September to $14.36 at the end of October. Analysts have a consensus price target of $18.69. Goodyear is back to profits and shares are actually still very cheap at about 7-times a blended forward P/E for 2011 and 2012 estimates.

El Paso Corp. (NYSE: EP) saw a 43.1% gain for the month but we would not that this is due mostly to the acquisition of the company.

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV) had a very large run as the network equipment player bounced hard off its lows. A move from $71.05 at the end of September to $103.95 was up 46.3%. Analysts have a consensus price target of $106.67.

Nabors Industries Ltd. (NYSE: NBR) was one of the top performers for October as the shares rose from $12.26 to $18.33, generating a 49.5% gain. The $100 million payout for the CEO exit is under criticism, but the oil and gas driller did beat earnings and has reorganized its management structure. Analysts have a consensus price target of $27.33.

Harman International Industries Inc. (NYSE: HAR) saw a rise of 51.5% as the stock rose from $28.53 on a dividend-adjusted basis up to $43.16. Analysts have a consensus price target of $47.25. In late October came word of higher 2012 guidance as well as a buyback of up to $200 million in its stock over the next year.

Betting on carbon capture has been hard to do, and it still may be a stretch for some investors who may have preferred to see smaller companies. Today came the announcement from the Department of Energy that it is awarding some $612 million for carbon capture projects to continue testing large-scale carbon capture and storage from industrial sources. We have found the three groups which are beneficiaries announced today…. Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD) and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO) are one, Archer Daniels Midland Corporation (NYSE: ADM) is a second, and Leucadia National Corp. (NYSE: LUK) and Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR) is a third (Denbury is a winner in two of these actually). Unfortunately, these projects are going to require patience for the next phases…

Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD) is one beneficiary with the DOE share listed at $253 million, although Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO) is involved as well. This one also includes Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR). Air Products will partner with Denbury Onshore LLC to capture and sequester 1 million tons of CO2 per year from existing steam-methane reformers in Port Arthur, Texas, starting in November 2012. As stated… “The CO2 will be delivered via a 12-mile connector pipeline to an existing Denbury interstate CO2 pipeline and sequestered via use for enhanced oil recovery in the West Hastings oilfield. The project team includes Air Products & Chemicals, Denbury Onshore LLC, the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, and Valero Energy Corporation.”

Archer Daniels Midland Corporation (NYSE: ADM) was the second beneficiary, although this is smaller with a DOE share listed as $99 million. The project will capture and sequester 1 million tons of CO2 per year from an existing ethanol plant in Illinois, starting in August 2012. As stated, “The CO2 will be sequestered in the Mt. Simon Sandstone, a well-characterized saline reservoir located about one mile from the plant. The project team includes Archer Daniels Midland, Schlumberger Carbon Services, and the Illinois State Geological Survey.” Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) is just too large to make note of for the size of this.

Leucadia National Corp. (NYSE: LUK) and Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR) are listed as the third winners via Leucadia Energy, LLC and Denbury Onshore LLC with the DOE share being listed as $260 million. It and Denbury Onshore LLC will capture and sequester 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year from a new methanol plant in Lake Charles, La. As stated, “The CO2 will be delivered via a 12-mile connector pipeline to an existing Denbury interstate CO2 pipeline and sequestered via use for enhanced oil recovery in the West Hastings oilfield, starting in April 2014. The project team includes Leucadia Energy, Denbury, General Electric, Haldor Topsoe, Black & Veatch, Turner Industries, and The University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology.” General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is in this but is too large to make note of for this type of award. Leucadia’s 2009 annual report noted regarding the Lake Charles project, “We have applied for U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grants that will assist us with
working out a means to sequester the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by the plant. We are in active negotiations with multiple parties for the sale of the plant’s output.”

Keep in mind that this is out to 2012 and is a continuation of smaller and previous pacts in what may total a $1.4 billion effort in total.

The full DOE report is here.

(NYSE:DNR) will be added to the S&P 500 after trading closes on April 1st. Denbury replaces Rohm and Haas Co. (NYSE:ROH), which Standard & Poor’s expects to be purchased by Dow Chemical Corp. (NYSE:DOW).

Like most E&P companies, Denbury had a big first half of 2008, but earnings sank in the second half on falling crude prices. EPS for the full 2008 fiscal year was $1.59; for the fourth quarter EPS totaled just $0.18, barely 11% of the total.

Denbury has operations in the Barnett Shale play in Texas, and tertiary recovery fields in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The company also owns a large carbon dioxide deposit in Mississippi. The CO2 is used in a technique called CO2 flooding to cover more barrels from existing fields. Denbury is also building a new CO2 pipeline, which the company hopes to use to pipe carbon dioxide from power plant emissions to fields for enhanced oil recovery.

Denbury shares are up nearly 8% this morning. The company’s 52-week range is $5.59-$40.32, and its market cap as of yesterday was $4.03 billion.

Apartment Investment and Management Co. (NYSE: AIV) Executive VicePresident David Robertson sold another 14,800 company shares early thisweek after the company stock had dropped some 7).

Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE: BSX) co-founder and Chairman Peter M.Nicholas was forced to sell over $29 million worth of BSX shares, butdon’t feel too bad for him. He’s got plenty more.

Callon Petroleum Inc. (NYSE: CPE) chairman and CEO Fred Callon unloaded110,000 company shares at an average price of $7.84 to meet margincalls.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) CEO Aubrey McLendon has alreadybeen wiped out of essentially all of his shares worth more than 41billion back at the peak. The sad part is his forced selling may havebeen right at the lows.

Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR) CEO Garteth Roberts had 513,000shares sold in involuntary margin calls. Interestingly enough, thiswas to meet a real estate loan rather than any stock event.

Life Time Fitness Inc (NYSE: LTM) Chairman & CEO Bahram Akradi wasforced to sell roughly $5.6 million in involunarty stock sales sales tocover margin calls.

Provident Financial Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: PROV) senior VP Richard Galesold 5,000 shares of company stock at an average of $5.76 to meet amargin call. CEO & President Craig Blunden disclosed early thisweek that he had to unload 11,929 shares of stock the prior week tomeet margin calls.

Pulte Homes Inc. (NYSE: PHM) chairman and founder William J. Pulte soldsome 760,000 Pulte shares to meet margin calls. These were apparentlyrelated to loan agreements that involved family members
and a charitable organization. And who said charity was so great….

Sparton Corp. (NYSE: SPA) Chairman Bradley Smith dumped 12,000 sharesof company stock to meet a margin call. This sale only netted about$22,000.00, but he has had to unload over $500,000.00 so far.

Sterling Construction Co. (NASDAQ: STRL) Chief Executive PatrickManning sold an additional 3,594 shares over margin calls, and it lookslike this brings his tally to more than $750,000.00 in margin callsales. A builder, in Houston….

Williams-Sonoma Inc. (NASDAQ: WSM) Chairman & CEO W.Howard Lester has now sold roughly 2.15 million shares to cover margincalls after a last filing this week showed that he sold 1.15 millionshares. Sadly enough, he nearly sold at the 52-week low.

Earlier this month, Boston Scientific’s (NYSE:BSX) co-founders took a similar hit which was re-hit yesterday.

Aubrey McClendon of Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) was forced to sell nearly all his Chesapeake stock to meet margin calls on a loan.

Even Sumner Redstone has had to sell stakes from his National Amusement entity of stakes in CBS (NYSE: CBS) and Viacom (NYSE: VIA).

Even Hank Greenberg has not been immune to selling shares in American International Group (NYSE: AIG).

We have said before, and we’ll repeat it now, there will be more of this inthe future. This doesn’t just happen to leaders of small companies and it doesn’t just happen at troubled companies. This frequently happens to CEO’s holding stocks that fall in value which might not even be related to their own company. Now, we are seeing it tied to issues outside of stocks.

Ironically, Denbury is not suffering any hit to its shareprice this morning. The stock is up more than 11% as many investors arestarting to treat news of forced insider selling to meet margin calls as the final pukingphase of a drunk party.
