The soda industry has a problem. Some of the industry’s largest selling and most famous brands have lost well over a third of their sales in the last decade. When those brands include Sprite, Pepsi, and 7-Up, the erosion is worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year. 24/7 Wall St. examined the major soda brands to find which have been selling less and less.

Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) and Dr Pepper Snapple (NYSE: DPS) dominate the soft drink market in the U.S. Together they accounted for about 85% of the branded soda sales in the country during 2010. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have not only lost substantial sales of their largest brands, but their overall U.S. sales have dropped during the last ten years. Coca Cola’s sales across all of its soda brands in the U.S. as measured in gallons have fallen from 6.7 billion gallons in 2001 to 5.9 billion gallons last year. PepsiCo’s total gallon sales fell from 4.8 billion gallons to 4.1 billion gallons over the same period.

Industry experts say the struggles are not surprising as competition grew to include other drinks. The competition now includes bottled waters, sports drinks like Gatorade, energy drinks, and special water products that include vitamins and minerals. Popular brands like Fiji Water and Vitamin Water were not introduced into the U.S. until the late 1990s. The current versions of the popular Powerade sports drink were not available until 2001. These newer brands have had strong marketing support for years and are part of sophisticated distribution networks, making them formidable competitors to the traditional soda brands.

Each of the three large soft drink companies also creates new brands that aim to add new customers or keep current customers who want new products. This product development system created the diet and the caffeine free sodas in order to retain or capture those who wanted fewer calories or less caffeine.

The number of individual soda, water, and energy drink products that have significant sales has grown so much in the last decade that Coca Cola has four brands in the top ten sold in the U.S. that help it maintain a 22% market share. These include three versions of Coca Cola alone: Coke, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero. Coke Zero was not introduced until 2005, but it already has 1.3% of the entire U.S. soda market. By introducing new brands Coke managed to offset what would have been the much worse overall 12% drop in gallons sold between 2001 and 2010.

The soft drink business is almost unimaginably large. Coca-Cola’s global revenue was $12.3 billion in the third quarter of 2011 alone. Coke reported $5.4 billion in North American revenue. But growth was plodding. In the North American region, unit case volume rose only 5% compared to the same quarter in 2010.

PepsiCo’s soda revenue in the Americas were similar to Coca-Cola’s last quarter. Part of PepsiCo’s American operations make money because they distribute many of the Dr Pepper Snapple brands. Coca-Cola distributes some of the Dr Pepper Snapple brands as well. Dr Pepper Snapple, whose sales are dwarfed by those of the other two companies, benefits from the bottling, trucking, and stocking infrastructures created by the bigger firms. Dr Pepper Snapple’s total worldwide revenue for the last quarter was $1.5 billion.

The total gallons of each product sold by each company are measured by the brand’s name and brand owner, not by which company distributes it. 24/7 Wall St. examined the major brands sold by the three largest soda companies based on this method of measurement. Beverage World media company provided data on the number of gallons sold by each brand in 2001 and 2010. Gallons used in each analysis are in millions.

24/7’s analysis shows that some of the largest brands like Coke, Sprite, and 7 Up have been unable to maintain sales anywhere near what they were in 2001. This has caused two of the three major soda companies to lose large parts of their total gallon sales in the U.S.

This is 24/7 Wall St.’s Sodas America No Longer Drinks

1. Coca-Cola Classic
> Parent company: Coca-Cola
> Pct. change in gallons sold: -22%
> Gallons sold 2001: 3,044
> Gallons sold 2010: 2,386

Soon after it was first introduced by John Stith Pemberton in Atlanta in 1886, Coca-Cola became an American favorite. From 1899 until 1920 the number of bottlers grew from two to more than 1,000 nationwide. However, the last decade has seen the amount of Coca-Cola Classic consumed decrease significantly. Customers have turned to a number of similar alternatives to meet their specific preferences, including Diet Coke, Coke Zero, and Coca-Cola Cherry.

The month of October was one of the best ever for equities with double-digit gains from teh S&P 500 Index. There were some disappointments, however, and the ten worst performing stocks of the month lost between -3.4% and more than -25% of their value versus gains of 10.9% for the index. Here’s a look at the worst performers and a bit of color, together with implied upside based on Thomson/Reuters data on consensus price targets.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. fell -3.4%, from $38.78 to $37.45. The consensus price target for the stock is $42.00. The drinks maker posted solid earnings in the third quarter, and it pays a high 3.3% dividend yield. The downturn could just be a loss of confidence in sugary soft drinks.

Bemis Company Inc. (NYSE: BMS) fell -4.1%, from $29.31 to $28.11. The consensus price target for the stock is $34.00. The company makes flexible packaging for food and pharmaceuticals and last week announced that it would close “several” small plants around the world.

Avon Products Inc. (NYSE: AVP) fell -6.7%, from $19.60 to $18.28. The consensus price target is $29.00. The cosmetics maker got another downgrade this morning from Jefferies, and is also the subject of a federal investigation into bribery charges.

Cerner Corp. (NASDAQ: CERN) fell -7.4%, from $68.52 to $63.43. The consensus price target is $71.00. The company develops software for health care providers and, though it reported good earnings for the previous quarter, an announced acquisition is likely weighing on the share price.

Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) fell -8%, from $15.73 to $14.47. The consensus price target is $22.00. The cable TV provider reported lower profits in the third quarter and a subsidiary just sold $1 billion in senior unsecured notes. Investors are also concerned at the company’s rising costs.

BMC Software Inc. (NASDAQ: BMC) fell -9.9%, from $38.56 to $34.76. The consensus price target is $49.50. The business software maker said last week that its bookings are weak through the end of the year, and the share price got crushed.

Hospira Inc. (NYSE: HSP) fell -15%, from $37.00 to $31.45. The consensus price target is $36.50. The pharmaceutical and medicine company could feel the impact of a recent executive order signed by President Obama related to the distribution of generic drugs.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) fell -15.5%, from $3.04 to $2.57. The consensus price target is $3.70. The wireless carrier has essentially bet the company on the iPhone, and there is plenty of skepticism on Sprint’s ability to win the bet.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) fell -21.3%, from $63.21 to $49.77. The consensus price target is $100.00. First Solar’s share price topped $175 in the past 12 months, but falling module prices and lower government support is killing the whole solar sector. As the largest company by market cap in the sector, First Solar has taken a vicious beating.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) fell -27.5%, from $113.27 to $82.08. The consensus price target is $185.00. The stock’s 52-week high is over $300 and it is trading today at around $80. Shares were pummeled following an announced price increase, vehement opposition from subscribers, and the loss of 800,000 of those subscribers. Things could get worse here before they get better.

We have been searching for deep value stocks of late now that the market sell-off has taken out a large bite from the value of many major companies. Some analysts group food differently than beverages, but our screen includes all of the following to identify the best value: Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB); The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO); ConAgra Foods, Inc. (NYSE: CAG); Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE: DPS); General Mills, Inc. (NYSE: GIS); Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL); Kellogg Company (NYSE: K); Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT); Pepsico, Inc. (NYSE: PEP); Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN); and Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD).

We are looking at food and beverages separately today in identifying the best value for investors looking for safe havens in the storm. This sector is already very defensive in nature, and we found that the defensive sector of consumer products actually has a market premium due to investors seeking safety. The good news is that the food and beverage sector has a few differences.

Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) recently traded at $30.85 and its market cap is $10 billion. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $29.69 to $36.99. The current value is trading at a price-to-book ratio of about 9 to 1. Its forward price earnings multiple is 12.2 and its return on equity is 78.8%. The canned soup company currently pays a dividend yield of about 3.8% to investors. Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target of $34.00, implying roughly 10.2% upside to the most recent price. Campbell is under a new CEO and undergoing some change. It is hard to imagine that this is a luxury good or a health food group stock, but the company has been under fire from private-label soups in the past and it is now going to add more salt and flavors to regain some market share. Due to the correction, there is almost a turnaround element here.

The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) recently traded at $69.37 and its market cap is $159 billion. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $56.01 to $71.77. The current value is trading at a price-to-book ratio of about 4.5 to 1. Its forward price earnings multiple is 16.1 and its return on equity is 41.29%. The beverage giant currently pays a dividend yield of 2.71% to investors. Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target of $77.86, implying roughly 12.2% upside to the most recent price. What is so interesting about Coca-Cola is that it just the magic 52-week high list right after Labor Day. Coke and water, you gotta drink! This is a huge position for Warren Buffett, but chances are that it will be that way in a decade from now (or for his successor).

We may have just witnessed an oversold bounce in the stock market, or we may be in for more days of recovery. The markets are flirting with six weeks of negative performance and one day is not going to take away the caution that many investors feel. The global growth and the U.S. recovery have both stumbled as far as many investors are concerned and now many are looking for cover while still keeping some stock market exposure. Dividends offer safety for investors, but the go-to sector for investors who want exposure to stocks and want some comfort about what they own is the defensive stock group. We keep a defensive stock universe and we routinely run screens in and around this list along with outside peers.

The big screen today is defensive stocks with the highest dividends. Our screen came to a near-tie from Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO), Reynolds American Inc. (NYSE: RAI) and Lorillard, Inc. (NYSE: LO). We also found Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB), Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY), HJ Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ), ConAgra Foods, Inc. (NYSE: CAG), Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP), Dr Pepper Snapple (NYSE: DPS), and American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK).

CIGARETTES: The cigarette space yields three industry leading players, each with a payout exceeding 5%. Reynolds American Inc. (NYSE: RAI) leads with a dividend of 5.61%, followed by Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO) paying 5.57% and Lorillard, Inc. (NYSE: LO) paying 5.23%. Among the three companies, dividend payout ratios range from LO’s low of 65.0% to RAI’s high of 80.88%. Forward P/E’s range from LO’s low of 11.76 to RAI’s high of 13.31. RAI’s shares currently trade around 38, with a 52-week range of $25.53 to $39.87. With shares trading near $27.50, MO’s 52-week range is $19.53 to $28.13. LO’s shares currently trade around $102, LO’s 52-week range is $70.87 to $116.90. Fitch recently gave a report that it expects that tobacco players can easily mitigate legal pressures and regulatory pressures ahead. Maybe some investors feel guilty for owning stocks that make a living by killing their customers, but those dividend checks are big enough to clean up a conscience.

CONSUMER PRODUCTS: Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB) is the winner here in dividends for the consumer products sector with a dividend of almost 4.2%. It leads consumer product peers by far and it was one of our own stocks to own for the next decade. That has not changed. At $65.65, its has a 52-week range of $59.62 to $68.49, and Thomson Reuters sees a consensus price target of $68.58. Some have been concerned that rising input costs and in-store promotion costs are too large of a challenge. We think that Kimberly-Clark (and most peers) can actually survive and thrive either way.

BIG PHARMA: With a dividend of 5.2%, Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) leads major drug manufacturers. Eli Lilly has a dividend payout ratio of 46.38% and a forward P/E of 10.05. With shares trading near $38, LLY’s 52-week range is $32.81 to $39.40. Five other significant drug companies also pay attractive dividends in excess of 4%, including AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE: AZN), GlaxoSmithKline plc (NYSE: GSK), Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY), Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) and Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK). Dividends in this group range upward from Merck’s 4.25% to AstraZeneca’s 4.94%.

FOOD – MAJOR DIVERSIFIED: HJ Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ) leads its industry with a dividend of 3.6%. The company’s forward P/E of 14.56. With shares trading near $53.50, Heinz’s 52-week range is $42.88 to $55.00. The consensus price target is $56.81 per Thomson Reuters, so most of the return here may be left in the form of dividends. Goldman Sachs may have cut its rating to “SELL” recently but it still offers what looks to be the top dividend.

FOOD – PROCESSED & PACKAGED GOODS: ConAgra Foods, Inc. (NYSE: CAG) leads this segment of the food industry with a 3.8% dividend. ConAgra has a dividend payout ratio of 55.20% and a forward P/E of 12.88. With shares currently trading around 24.50, CAG’s 52-week range is $21.02 to $25.82. ConAgra is one which does not always feel as defensive as some food stocks, but that dividend is hard to beat.

BEVERAGES – BREWERS: Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP) leads brewers with almost a 2.9% dividend. The company’s payout ratio is 26.26%. Its forward P/E is 11.26. With shares trading near $44.50, TAP’s 52-week range is $41.88 to $51.11. The beer sector has not acted quite as defensive as other defensive sectors. Trends of micro-brews and smaller brews have been troublesome, as has input price trends. Still, we recently named the now-Canadian Coors owner as a value stock likely to benefit from the summer trends. In this heat wave, how many people can drink big red wines?

BEVERAGES – SOFT DRINKS: With a dividend of 3.2%, Dr Pepper Snapple (NYSE: DPS) leads this segment of the beverage industry. Dr Pepper’s dividend payout ratio is 41.30% and its forward P/E is 13.34. With shares trading around $40, DPS’s 52-week range is $33.60 to $42.44. Dr. Pepper may still be more growth-oriented than a Coke or Pepsi and it has raised its dividends. It is now paying a higher payout than both Coke and Pepsi. Shares are also close to the analyst target of $42.92.

WATER UTILITIES: American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK) leads the municipal water space with a dividend of about 3.1%. AWK’s payout ratio is 54.64%. Its forward P/E is 15.54. With shares trading near $28.50, the stock’s 52-week range is $19.92 to $30.70. This one is as defensive as you can get. You don’t have to an iPhone to live but try living without your water company. The company’s dividends have risen and are likely to keep rising though time, it has nothing short of monopolies in the local markets which it operates, and its stock has risen and risen until recently. There is a reason that this was one of our stocks to own for the next decade.

Call this what you want… value investing, dividend investing, or income investing. Many of these stocks are held by investors for years and years.

24/7 Wall St. has done an analysis of the largest companies in the United States based on the size of their portfolios of major consumer brands. Many of these brands are worth billions of dollars if brand valuation firms are correct. All certainly generate tremendous sales. The Procter & Gamble brand portfolio creates more than $40 billion in revenue each year. P&G has a market value of $186 billion. Coca-Cola, another company on the list, has a market value of $155 billion. The success of these corporations is based almost entirely on their brands.

Most of the corporations on this list have flagship products that are decades old and some were first introduced before 1900. None of the companies on the list is a one-trick pony. Brand diversification has been one of the most successful American business strategies over the last several decades. Mars has a large array of chocolate and pet food products. Kellogg has dozens of cereals. Each company used manufacturing, marketing, and distribution expertise as leverage for commodities purchases and product placements in retail outlets.

Read The American Companies With The Most Valuable Brands

Some of the corporations on the 24/7 Wall St. list have even gone beyond diversification within their core businesses. Pepsi sells soft drinks, bottled water and Frito Lay snacks. That, in theory, gives the company revenue diversification which helps create a steady flow of cash. A slowdown in beverage sales or an increase of the price of sugar used in its sodas may be offset by success in its grains-based snacks operation. This 24/7 Wall St. examination of brands is as much about brand management and aggregation as it is about brand value and earnings.

The list was created after our researchers looked at more than 100 large American companies which rely heavily on sales of branded products to the general public. The firms reviewed ranged from magazine publishing houses to broadcast companies to suppliers of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Each of the companies that made the list has more than 25 major brands. Procter & Gamble, at the top of the list, has nearly 50.

The reason that these firms are among the largest companies in the US, and in many cases, the world, is that they have been intelligent and aggressive brands stewards which have maintained and acquired brands as well as any other firms on earth.

The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) has turned in its first quarter earnings for 2011. The beverage giant said earnings rose to $1.9 billion, or $0.82 EPS… On an adjusted basis the earnings came to $0.86 EPS. The numbers a year ago were $1.61 billion in earnings and $0.69 EPS, and Thomson Reuters had estimates for this quarter of $0.87 EPS.

Revenues at Coca-Cola were up over 39% year over year to $10.52 billion against Thomson Reuters estimates of $10.57 billion. All in all, case volumes were up 6%. The huge gain in revenues is due in part to the numbers now including its bottling roll-ups.

One issue the company has brought up is hedging activities on exposure to commodity prices at the new CCE operating units. The hedging would have added $0.01 to EPS, while the company said that the impact of Japan probably took off $0.01 from the reported EPS figures.

The DJIA component is trading down about 1.8% at $66.52 versus a $67.74 close on Monday and against a 52-week trading range of $49.47 to 68.47. Unfortunately, Coca-Cola shareholders are still in a stock worth less than the peak of the late-1990′s.

Pepsico, Inc. (NYSE: PEP) is down 0.5% at $66.69 and its 52-week trading range is $60.32 to $68.11.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE: DPS) is due out with its earnings on Wednesday morning and its shares have yet to trade so far on Tuesday morning.

Last week we began a series of companies which we expect will raise their dividends in 2011. It was the first piece of a series and there are many other companies which we expect to boost their dividends in 2011. Some may seem obvious while others will not. We are looking for dividend hikes in 2011 from companies such as Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT), American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE: DPS), Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM), Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB), NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYS: NEE), NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYS: NEE), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT).

We have gone through the dividend history of each company here to outline a proper dividend growth history. Then we have looked at industry trends and earnings trends to interpolate the dividend coverage ratios to see how high companies could raise their dividends and even what the realistic dividend hikes would look like. There is also of course a yield analysis attached and the prospects ahead that make each attractive to dividend growth investors.

Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) is a company which could announce a dividend hike later in the first quarter of this year. After all, Abbott generally raises its dividend yearly and it is due after four quarters of $0.44 for a dividend. Abbott’s yield of 3.7% tops J&J, but lags Merck and Pfizer. At $47.92, its 52-week range is $44.59 to $55.66 and it already carries a 3.70% dividend yield. The company may want to draw attention to its stock and a dividend hike after earnings season may just be what the doctor ordered.

American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK) is still one of our Top 10 Companies To Hold For The Next Decade and it was also named The Best Water Stock for 2011 of our own water sector coverage. The growth will continue as long as it stays on its current path. The company has the broadest public water utility portfolio out there and that gives it a virtual monopoly in each of its local markets. It has about 16 million customers in 35 states and two Canadian provinces and a fresh asset sale in New Mexico and Arizona for $470 million changes nothing by our count.

We have identified this as a dividend grower in early 2010 and we expect a repeat performance in 2011. The current $0.88 annualized payout compares to earnings expectations for 2010 of $1.52 EPS and $1.62 EPS for 2011. We won’t expect another dividend hike before the summer here, but that $0.22 quarterly payout is likely to rise to $0.23 or $0.235 this year. At $25.59, this one keeps hitting new 52-week highs almost each month and it has rarely offered any pullbacks to eager investors.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE: DPS) is much younger as a public company compared to PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, at least this time around. Last year the company noted that it intended to hike its payout after it paid off more debt and regained its investment-grade rating. Even after fresh debt offerings after retiring debt at the end of 2010, those investment-grade ratings hold. We do not expect an imminent hike from the beverage giant with some 50 different brands. We would also did not expect the same 67% hike seen in 2010 as it caught up to peers on the shareholder payout game.

Dr. Pepper’s $0.25 dividend is likely to be boosted to $0.30 per quarter or $1.20 per year. Earnings expectations are $2.38 EPS for 2010 and $2.77 EPS for 2011. This offers more than ample dividend coverage as its 2.8% dividend is pretty much on par with Coca-Cola and Pepsi. We believe that Dr. Pepper Snapple wants to differentiate itself as a higher dividend yield. This dividend hike may come closer to the middle of 2011. At $65.87, its 52-week range is $58.75 to $68.11.

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) has a surprisingly low dividend considering that it is America’s largest oil and gas play. The company continues to repurchase stock as if there is no tomorrow, and the reason the dividend is not even higher is because it had to digest that XTO acquisition. Fortunately, that was a stock-for-stock merger rather than a buyout which would have eaten up all of its cash and available liquidity. The two most recent dividend hikes were only by two-cents per quarter and the current $0.44 dividend (or $1.56 per year) is one we expect to be raised higher than just two-cents this year.

This Exxon dividend hike may not come before the second quarter, but there is more than enough dividend coverage here to reward shareholders more. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $5.91 EPS for 2010 and $6.77 EPS for 2011. Shares just hit a new high last week and its $78.98 closing price offers a current yield of about 2.2% to investors today. It is time for Big Oil to boost its payout here yet again. Our take is that the dividend gets hiked to $0.48 per quarter at the next dividend hike.
