Markets opened lower this morning, and a modest gain of 80,000 non-farm jobs and a slight improvement of the US unemployment rate to 9.0% didn’t lift investors’ spirits before the opening. Today’s confidence vote in Greece kept financial stocks down as investors try to figure out what it will mean if the Greek prime minister is booted out and the country doesn’t accept the latest batch of austerity tied to the country’s $180 billion bail-out package. The IPO of Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) went off at $20, with shares rising to $31.44 before pulling back to $26.11 in the last half hour of trading. Crude oil is basically flat and gold has pulled back less than -0.5%. The dollar is slightly stronger against both the euro and the yen, putting weight on commodities.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 61 points to 11,983.32 (-0.51%), the NASDAQ fell more than 11 points (-0.44%) to 2,686.15, and the S&P 500 fell -0.63% or more than 7 points to 1,253.23.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Big Lots, Inc. (NYSE: BIG) raised to ‘outperform’ at Wedbush. Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) was raised to ‘outperform’ at Zack’s and was named the firm’s Bull of the Day; Royal Gold Inc. (NASDAQ: RGLD) was cut to ‘sector perform’ at National Bank; SandRidge Energy Inc. (NYSE: SD) was cut to ‘hold’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Sunpower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA) was cut to ‘underperform’ at Macquarie; and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) was cut to ‘neutral’ at Macquarie. We noted a change in the solar sector earlier today.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX) is up about 6.4%, at $44.04, after posting a new 52-week high earlier in the day; LinkedIn Corp. (NASDAQ: LNKD) is down more than -6%, at $82.09; Analysts International Corp. (NASDAQ: ANLY) is up nearly 28%, at $4.67; Oxigene, Inc. (NASDAQ: OXGN) is down -33%, at $1.22; Rosetta Stone, Inc. (NYSE: RST) is down more than -23%, at $7.77, after posting a new low earlier today; and MasTec, Inc. (NYSE: MTZ) is down -20%, at $17.52.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Alon USA Energy, Inc. (NYSE: ALJ) is up nearly 46%, at $11.40. The Israeli-based oil refiner has struck a deal to receive 25,000 barrels/day of WTI crude at its Louisiana refinery, which will give its margins a sharp boost.

DragonWave, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) is up 36%, at $4.91. The company has agreed to buy the microwave business from the joint venture Nokia Siemens Networks.

SemiLEDS Corp. (NASDAQ: LEDS) is up nearly 37%, to $4.04. The company got a huge boost from the Chinese government’s announcement that it will ban incandescent light bulbs beginning next year.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) is down more than -6%, at $27.24. The company reported better-than-expected earnings this morning, but asset sales to generate cash are causing concerns among investors.

Imperial Sugar Co. (NASDAQ: IPSU) is down more than -12%, at $6.01, after posting a new 52-week low of $5.75 earlier today. The company is suspending its quarterly dividend.

Seattle Genetics Inc. (NASDAQ: SGEN) is down about -18%, at $18.02. The shares posted an all-time high earlier this week, but the stock price run-up may have exaggerated the company’s growth prospects.

Stay tuned for Monday. Boston Federal Reserve president Eric Rosengren is giving a speech in the morning. We have noted the following events (all times Eastern):

11:00 a.m. – Four-week Treasury bill announcement

11:30 a.m. – Three- and six-month Treasury bill auction

3:00 p.m. – Federal Reserve consumer credit report

(NYSE: AA); J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM); DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI); Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP); Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (NYSE: FCS); Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS); Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT); SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE: SVU); Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: CBST); Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG); JB Hunt Transport Services Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT); Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC); and The Charles Schwab Corporation (NYSE: SCHW).

We have included some color on each if applicable and included Thomson Reuters estimates and price performance metrics.

Alcoa, Inc. (NYSE: AA) is out with earnings Monday after the close, and it is the first DJIA component and the one company that investors, traders, and speculators often try to use as a bogey for determining the strength of earnings season. At a minimum, the company may be used as a tool to judge how other metals companies are doing. Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $0.27 EPS and $6.30 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.35 EPS and $6.29 billion in revenues. Shares are around $18.00 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading at $16.49 about 90-days ago.

Wednesday morning we get to see financial powerhouse JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM). Jamie Dimon and friends will set the tone of how banking and financial firms are doing and how they see the current environment. Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $1.16 EPS and $25.6 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $1.17 EPS and $25.22 billion in revenues. Shares are around $47.00 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading around $44.00 about 90-days ago.

DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) is after the close of trading on Wednesday, and this one is sometimes used as a proxy for how Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) and Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR) are doing. That being said, we’ll leave it there for you to decide how tied these are. Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates for DragonWave of -$0.16 EPS and $15.14 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are -$0.07 EPS and $23.88 million in revenues. Shares are around $8.37 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading at $8.06 about 90-days ago.

Thursday morning comes data-security leader Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP). Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $0.62 EPS and $276.71 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.65 EPS and $293.17 million in revenues. Shares are around $51.70 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading around $47.00 about 90-days ago.

Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (NYSE: FCS) reports Thursday morning. After the TI-NSM merger, investors will be paying closer attention than before. Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $0.36 EPS and $413.25 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.39 EPS and $422.76 million in revenues. Shares are around $19.00 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading at $16.00 about 90-days ago.

Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) is due Thursday morning and it is probably safe to assume that investors will of course bet watching Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) on the news ahead of its earnings due Friday… Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $0.17 EPS and $661.69 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.38 EPS and $842.07 million in revenues. Shares are around $47.35 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading at $46.00 about 90-days ago.

SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE: SVU) is no market mover, but it has been cut in half over the last year and remains a giant turnaround stock for many investors. Thomson Reuters has consensus estimates of $0.34 EPS and $8.75 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.32 EPS and $11.35 billion in revenues. Shares are around $9.33 in Friday afternoon trading and shares were trading at $8.91 about 90-days ago before challenging the $7.00 mark thereafter.

Shares of Clearwire Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) have fallen more than 30% in the past year, and there are plenty of signs that things are not going to get better any time soon. This is a situation where there is a huge opportunity but also a set of huge hurdles ahead. The company’s recent management shake-up calls attention to heightened competition in wireless broadband service, Clearwire’s huge debt, and its disagreement with majority owner Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) over distribution fees.

That’s most of the bad news. The good news is that Clearwire owns more spectrum for delivering wireless broadband than any other company. In order for the company to survive and thrive, it needs to parlay its spectrum into cash flow. And a lot could depend on whether the rumored merger between Sprint and Deutsche Telekom AG’s (OTC: DTEGY) T-Mobile USA occurs.

Clearwire’s most pressing problem is, as usual, cash. Clearwire burns through cash at a ferocious rate as it continues to build out its new fourth-generation (4G) wireless network. The company claims enough cash to last through the first half of 2011. Negotiations with Sprint over distribution pricing must be completed before Clearwire can reasonably expect to round up more cash.

Clearwire’s lack of cash is also hurting some of its suppliers. Large companies like Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) and Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) have enough other customers to pick up the slack, but smaller outfits like DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) have seen share prices fall right along with Clearwire.

Clearwire has tried to rein in costs by halting expansion of its retail outlets and killing a plan to sell its own branded smartphone. The company is also considering selling some of its spectrum. The company’s former CEO was shopping about a third of Clearwire’s spectrum for up to $5 billion. Unfortunately, he recently left the company and teh company is now under an interim-CEO. Even if Clearwire eventually sells spectrum for just half that amount, the company’s main asset is worth $7.5 billion, more than double its current market cap.

There is plenty of value in Clearwire, so why can’t the company unlock it? Sprint, which owns 54% of Clearwire, has nearly $5.5 billion in cash and short-term investments, but won’t put more cash into Clearwire until the pricing issue is settled. Even then, Sprint is likely to want changes to Clearwire’s build-out plans, something the companies have disagreed about before.

A merger between Sprint and T-Mobile would enhance the probability that Clearwire would get fresh infusion of cash. The company’s spectrum would be a big help in bringing some rationality to the different network services that Sprint and T-Mobile support. Making relatively inexpensive changes like installing more antennas and base station cards would allow Sprint/T-Mobile to support the 4G LTE networks that Sprint is building, the WiMax network of T-Mobile, the iDEN push-to-talk network of Sprint, and both 3G wireless networks, GSM and CDMA. It could be a network nightmare in the short haul, but such an integration could give Sprint/T-Mobile an unequaled US network.

Clearwire owns such a significant asset that about the only thing that will force the company off a cliff is a sudden collapse in demand for wireless broadband spectrum. Such a collapse simply won’t happen. Whether or not Clearwire can do what needs to be done to prosper is not such a sure bet.

Paul Ausick

Cytori Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CYTX) is being punished after it priced a 4 million share secondary offering $4.50 per share. Shares are down 12.9% at $4.65 after closing at $5.34 Thursday.

DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) is up over 5% at $7.01 holding on to last night’s gains on positive earnings guidance news. Volume is thin.

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV) is lower now that Goldman Sachs cut the rating to a SELL based on valuations and a lack of a deal coming per its belief.

Genzyme Corporation (NASDAQ: GENZ) formally rejected Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) and its $69 cash bid and now is exploring alternatives to seek a formal sale process to other buyers. Shares are up only 0.8% at $72.95 as skeptics feel a higher bid is not going to be coming or will not be much more than the $69 already on the table.

Kulicke & Soffa (NASDAQ: KLIC) proved that dirt cheap valuations did not even factor in all the bad news that should have been priced in. Shares are down 12.6% at $5.67 on more than 1.8 million shares pre-market; the 52-week range is $4.03 to $9.58. KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ: KLAC) is viewed as the larger version of KLIC by traders on many days and its shares are down 2.5% at $34.10 in thinner volume in sympathy with KLIC.

National Bank of Greece SA (NYSE: NBG) is lower by 2.3% at $2.50 this morning on 65,000 pre-market shares, probably on more Greek and PIIGS concerns.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONXX) is trading lower after it delayed its FDA New Drug Application for carfilzomib. Shares are down in line with the move last night and the stock is down 6.6% at $25.69, but volume is thin compared to its 500,000 shares traded after the close last night.

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSYS) is up by 7.71% at $4.89 on more than 30,000 shares after it received a telecom systems order of $9.3 million for global satellites from the US Army though August 2011.

(NYSE: C) is trading up 0.5% at $3.92 on active trading volume. The company reportedly sold off some of its private equity group for $900 million. Citi’s price move was muted compared to many of the banks yesterday, part of which may be due to the ongoing overhang of Uncle Sam selling shares.

DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) is leading the loser-board this morning. The company said its quarterly revenue rose 275% to $48.7 million, but its guidance now expects revenue for Q2 FY 2011 to be about $25 million. Shares are down 16% at $4.70, far worse than the 10% to 12% drop last night.

Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER) is surging this morning by 8% at $4.58, but on thin trading volume. An active message board discusses strategic alternatives, but that is just chatter and not news from the company so far.

Limited Brands, Inc. (NYSE: LTD) is up big after posting June same-store sales gains of 6%, twice the gain that was expected during a soft month. The problem is that volume is very thin, so this could be grossly different by the time the market opens up. Shares are trading up about 7.5% at $25.46 on very thin trading volume.

Madison Square Garden, Inc. (NYSE: MSG) is playing a give-back game this morning after yesterday’s speculative trading that LeBron James might go to the New York Knicks. There was highly unusual options trading. In early trading, MSG is down 3.6% at $20.79.

Nanometrics Incorporated (NASDAQ: NANO) is looking painful this morning after Oppenheimer cut the shares to Perform with a $10 price target. Shares are down 13% at $9.46 after a $10.86 close yesterday.

Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. (NYSE: SKH) is trying to bounce a bit, but this may just be the proverbial dead cat bounce after yesterday’s implosion. The stock was downgraded to Hold at Jefferies and was also cut late yesterday at JMP Securities and at Credit Suisse after the stock imploded. Shares are up 2% at $1.55 but the pre-8AM trading showed indications up over 5%.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is trying to pose a bounce this morning but this is still a busted IPO for all practical purposes. Shares closed at $15.80 and the stock is up almost 3% at $16.25 on about 25,000 shares in early pre-market trading.

Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) and Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) are gone from the NYSE. Fannie is now OTC-BB “FNMA” and Freddie Mac is now OTC-BB “FMCC” on the over the counter markets. Here is a list of their full ticker list for all the preferred shares as well.

Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. (NASDAQ: BWLD) opened up this morning but slid steadily after the first few minutes of trading. Shares are down 1.2% at $37.40 after continued fears of same-store sales gains. Volume is rather light here today.

Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is down 1.1% at $18.16 and Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) is down 1.4% at $24.30 in early afternoon trading after a Bernstein downgrade.

Dean Foods Company (NYSE: DF) is down a whopping 24.7% at $11.03 on major volume of well over 20 million shares half-way through the trading day. Dean saw an earnings slide and it suspended earnings guidance, and this technically a decade low.

DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ: DRWI) is down after four or five analysts either cut estimates or downgraded the stock after last week’s troubled earnings showing that its growth may already be capped. Shares are down almost 8% at $5.53 on the day.

Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) is down 0.15% at $27.47, likely on more and more fears about the Gulf of Mexico spill.

Moody’s Corporation (NYSE: MCO) is down over 7.5% at $21.58 today after reports that it may face SEC action(s) for misleading regulators in a license application that may have added fuel to the fire over the credit crisis. Throw in The McGraw Hill Companies, Inc. (NYSE: MHP) in there for its S&P unit to have a near-7% drop to $28.19. Wait one second here, ratings agencies having a stake in the credit bubble and crisis…. Duh!!!!

NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NRG) was down 0.2% at $22.60 this morning after its net income was down 70% net on less derivative gains and as results from operations missed expectations.

Pacific Capital Bancorp (NASDAQ: PCBC) is at it again… today for a 6.1% drop to $2.29 on well over 8 million shares.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is the only of the 30 DJIA components not up on the day, and shares are down 0.2% at $52.24 as investors go back into “recovery retail winners” rather than the winner of the recession.

Of the “barely up crowd” there are the following:

Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) is up only about 1% today at $57.95 on light volume, a surprise considering that this is one of the retail investor favorites.

Genzyme Corporation (NASDAQ: GENZ) is one where investors are choosing other growth over current problems. Shares are up not even 0.2% at $51.87 on a day that almost every major biotech is far higher.

These are not the only losers on a strong day, but this is a solid example of the stocks which are just not performing along with the market.
