Still Too Many Mixed Solar Signals (FSLR, ENER, AMAT, CSIQ, VECO, ED, WFR)

Solar Roof ImageThere are many things that help solar power and orders for the sector, but arguably higher energy prices and tax incentives or subsidies probably dwarf the overall economic situation.  There seems to be a steady series of ups followed by more downs, and you can blame part on the economy and on energy prices.  First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER), Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO), Consolidated Edison Inc. (NYSE: ED), and MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (NYSE: WFR) have all been in solar light with news.

Getting a Grip on Carbon Emissions (CEG, ED, PEG)

Carbon_emission_pic_2Last week, a consortium of ten states in the northeastern US held its initial auction of allowances to emit CO2. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) has set a cap on carbon emissions of 188 million tons in 2009. Each of the more than 230 power plants in the ten states will be required to "pay" for carbon emissions with the carbon allowances at a rate of one allowance (usually called a credit) for each ton of CO2 emitted. Companies doing business in various aspects in these states include Constellation (NYSE:CEG), Consolidated Edison (NYSE:ED), and Public Service Enterprise Group (NYSE:PEG), among others.

Cramer Goes Trolling For High Yields (ED, PBT)

On tonight’s MAD MONEY on CNBC, Jim Cramer was talking about the decline and fall of the value of cash compared to being invested, and in particular how to avoid the value of the declining dollar.  His answer here is chasing high yield stocks because you yield less and less in cash right now.  He thinks this is even more the case with only 15% income tax on dividends.

His first stock noted was Consolidated Edison Inc. (NYSE: ED) with its 5.7% yield and steady and solid business in power supply.  This jumped almost 1% after he noted it in after-hours to $41.38 and its 52-week trading range is $40.57 to $52.90.

His second stock is a US energy trust because the companies here (LP’s usually) do not pay taxes as long as they pay out almost all of their income.  With oil prices staying high he likes the U.S. trusts better than the Canadian trusts because the 15% tax penalty for U.S. citizens that buy these. His favorite is the Permian Basin Trust (NYSE: PBT) because of a mix between oil and gas located in Texas.  But this one has a 12% yield and he thinks it could actually become a higher yield.  This popped 3% in after-hours to $20.00 after he talked it up, and that is above the 52-week range of $12.45 to $19.43.

A while back, Cramer gave some of his Canadian picks in the group he thought that could be acquired in the space.

The 52-Week Low Club (AMLN, ARRS, AU, ED, GCI, IACI, IUSA, PCG, SLRY)

Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: AMLN) is becoming a regular in this club. Yet another low of $28.02 intraday from a high of $53.25. It actually closed at $28.62, so it closed above the prior $28.41 low.

Arris Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS). After an 86% drop in profit, shares plunge, targets are cut, and analysts downgrade, Arris lost 30% today and closed down at $5.50 from a former low of $6.91. The 52 week high is $17.89.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (NYSE:AU)  A gold stock on the 52-week lows? Power issues prevail over high commodity prices… ouch! Trading at $33.75. The 52 week range is $33.80 to $51.35.

Consolidated Edison Inc. (NYSE:ED). $10 million lawsuit in the working from a mid-summer accident. Shares  down to $42.40, but $41.96 was the intraday low. The 52 week range is $42.35 to $52.90.

Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI). It’s amazing when even a Warren Buffet stake won’t help a newspaper. Shares down to $31.90, prior 52-week range $31.97 to $63.50.

IAC/InteractiveCorp. (NASDAQ: IACI) has been under review for our special situations letter, although it has not yet been added with any formal recommendations. Shares actually closed up marginally at $21.88 after falling down to a low of $21.56; with a 52 week range of $21.80 to $52.90.

infoUSA Inc. (NASDAQ: IUSA) With such a lame Super Bowl commercial, what else could one ask for? Trading in at $7.82, but it traded as low as $7.50 today; preior range was $7.76 to $11.30.  We recently panned this one for our "10 Stocks Under $10" letter ahead of the big game.

PG & E Corp. (NYSE: PCG). As a reward for awards for environmental stewardship, this utility is given a new low. Trading at $39.85 it closed up marginally at the end of the day, but it saw $39.19 earlier today; 52-week trading range is $39.45 to $52.17.

Salary.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: SLRY).  We featured Salary.com on our "10 Stocks Under $10" letter as one of the worst ideas for an IPO of internet stocks and having potentially a fair value of $5 to $6 per share. Today, it reached a new low of $8.00 after a late morning nose-dive before coming back to close "only" down 2.8% at $8.32. The prior 52-week range was $8.31 to $16.32.

Cramer’s Tight End Fantasy Stock Picks (T, ED, EPD)

On tonight’s MAD MONEY, Jim Cramer continued his ‘fantasy football draft pick’ methodology in picking stocks for a portfolio that will withstand a recession.  Tonight after a strong market he wants to review a portfolio of tight end picks.  These will stand firm and are still on offense and score touchdowns occasionally (upside, with high dividends that protect).  Here are his three picks:

  • AT&T (NYSE:T);
  • Con Edison (NYSE:ED);
  • Enterprise Partners (NYSE:EPD).

In the prior segment he gave his "wide receiver picks" that are the aggressive big scoring stocks.

Last night he gave his picks that were not defensive, but still the leaders as the quarterback.  But before that he gave his solid Defensive linemen picks that are defensive stock picks, and four of those were in our own LIST OF 17 DEFENSIVE STOCKS that we modified last Friday morning.  Sixteen of those seventeen stocks closed up today.

I use baseball analogies quite frequently, but if you aren’t American or if you aren’t a football fan these shows this week are probably a challenge to watch.
