In Asia, equities were mostly higher following yesterday’s buoyant session in the U.S. The exception was Japan’s Nikkei, which finished lower on a strengthening yen. In Europe, Italy sold 5- and 10-year debt at higher yields, but the country sold them all. In the U.S., mortgage loans dipped again (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/02/27/another-slide-in-mortgage-applications/"title="Another Slide in Mortgage Applications" >here) and durable goods orders came in below expectations (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/02/27/why-the-awful-january-durable-goods-report-was-ignored-gdp-revision-looming/"title="Why the Awful January Durable Goods Report Was Ignored, GDP Revision Looming" >here). The report on pending home sales was sharply higher, though, (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/02/27/january-pending-home-sales-near-two-year-high/"title="January Pending Home Sales Near Two-Year High" >here) and helped push stocks higher in advance of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s second day of Congressional testimony.

The U.S. dollar index fell 0.33% today, now at 81.601. The GSCI commodity index is down 0.8% at 653.56, with commodities prices mostly higher today on the weaker dollar. Brent crude trades down 0.7% at $111.95 a barrel. Natural gas is down 1% today at about $3.42 per million BTUs. Gold settled down 1.2% today at $1,595.70 an ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 176 points to 14,076.22 (1.27%), the NASDAQ rose more than 32 points (1.04%) to 3,162.27, and the S&P 500 rose 1.28% or about 19 points to 1,516.032.

The three major US stock indexes opened higher this morning as markets were getting primed for the afternoon’s statement from the FOMC. Tomorrow’s announcement on interest rates from the European Central Bank now takes center stage. China’s PMI report came in weaker than expected (our report <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/01/more-china-pmi-trouble/"title="More China PMI Trouble" >here), but Asian markets finished higher, probably hoping that the weaker PMI would lead to more Chinese government stimulus. US and European PMI readings were mixed, with the Eurozone revised up, while both Germany and France posted downward revisions (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/01/sluggish-pmi-for-the-u-s-and-eurozone-in-july/"title="Sluggish PMI for the U.S. and Eurozone in July" >here). When the FOMC minutes were finally released, markets responded by dropping sharply on the lack of stronger hints for more stimulus (our coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/01/fomc-promises-easing-measures-as-if-needed/"title="FOMC Promises More Easing Measures As (if) Needed" >here).

The US dollar index rose today, now up 0.46% at 83.013. The GSCI commodity index fell by about -1.3% to 635.82, with commodities prices mostly lower again today. WTI crude oil rose 1% today, closing at $88.91/barrel, following the EIA’s weekly petroleum status report (our coverage here). Brent crude trades up 0.74% at $105.70/barrel. Natural gas is down -1.18% today to $3.171/thousand cubic feet. Gold settled at $1,603.70/ounce, down -0.4% for the day.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 31 points to 12,977.42 (-0.24%), the NASDAQ fell more than 19 points (-0.66%) to 2,920.21, and the S&P 500 fell 0.29% or nearly 4 points to 1,375.37.

Markets opened lower this morning and by mid-morning equities were trading down about -1% across the board, where they have mostly remained for the rest of the day. Worries about Spain have replaced worries about Greece, and both the high borrowing levels by Spanish banks (our coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/13/spanish-borrowing-hits-record-high/"title="Spanish Borrowing Hits Record High" >here) and the record high CDS rates stoked those concerns. China’s weaker-than-expected GDP growth also figured into today’s lower prices (our coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/13/chinas-gdp-slump-is-it-a-recession/"title="China’s GDP Slump — Is It a Recession?" >here). A flight to safety lifted Treasuries and the dollar. The US dollar index rose today, now up 0.76% at 79.885. The GSCI commodity index is up about 1.2% at 687.36, with most commodities falling on the rising dollar. WTI crude oil closed down -0.8% at $102.83/barrel, and Brent crude trades down -0.26% at $121.20/barrel. Gold settled down -1.2% today, at $1,660.20/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down nearly 137 points to 12,849.59 (-1.05%), the NASDAQ fell more than 44 points (-1.45%) to 3,011.33, and the S&P 500 fell -1.25% or more than 17 points to 1,370.26.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) reiterated as ‘buy’ and target price raised to $770 at BofA/ML; Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) cut to ‘equal-weight’ at Barclays (our coverage here); VMWare Inc. (NYSE: VMW) started as ‘overweight’ at Piper Jaffray; Edison International (NYSE: EIX) raised to ‘outperform’ at Wells Fargo; and Cloud Peak Energy Corp. (NYSE: CLD) cut to ‘neutral’ at Credit Suisse (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/13/coal-mining-stocks-easy-come-easy-go-btu-aci-anr-pcx-jrcc-cld/"title="Coal Mining Stocks: Easy Come, Easy Go (BTU, ACI, ANR, PCX, JRCC, CLD)" >here).

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is down -3.9% at $625.38 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/12/google-clouds-good-earnings-with-new-class-of-stock-split-goog/"title="Google Clouds Good Earnings With New Class of Stock & Split (GOOG)" >here); JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) is down -3.5% at $43.26 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/13/jpmorgan-sails-past-earnings-still-healthy-discount-to-book-value-jpm/"title="JPMorgan Sails Past Earnings, Still Healthy Discount To Book Value (JPM)" >here); Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) is down -3.3% at $32.90 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/04/13/wells-fargo-slumps-on-earnings-wfc/"title="Wells Fargo Slumps on Earnings (WFC)" >here); and iGate Corp. (NASDAQ: IGTE) is up 10.5% at $18.97 after posting a new 52-week high earlier today of $19.64.

Our preview of the top earnings reports due next week is available here. Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C), Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC), and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) are among the major reports we’re waiting for.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Good Times Restaurants Inc. (NASDAQ: GTIM) is up 98.2% at $2.18 after posting a new 52-week high today of $3.14. The small restaurant chain hired a consultant to help it review its strategic options, one of which would be more acquisitions.

The business outsourcing firm issued a forecast that was short of analysts’ expectations.
