The three major US stock indexes opened higher this morning, following on a positive debt sale by Portugal and some improvement in PMI numbers from Europe. ADP employment data did not meet expectations, but did not pull stocks down. ISM data fell a bit short of expectations, but construction spending rose sharply. In Asia, China posted mixed PMI reports and the country’s data on new loans was lower than expected. US oil and gasoline inventories rose more than expected, put a crimp in energy prices that had started our higher for the day (more coverage here). WTI crude finished the day down -0.9% at $97.61/barrel, its lowest level in six weeks. Brent crude rose 0.71% to $111.77/barrel. Gold closed up 0.41% at $1,747.60.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 83 points to 12,716.31 (0.66%), the NASDAQ rose more than 34 points (1.22%) to 2,848.27, and the S&P 500 rose 0.89% or nearly 12 points to 1,324.08.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) raised to ‘outperform’ at Wells Fargo; Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) cut to ‘hold’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) raised to ‘buy’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus (see our coverage here); and Monster Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: MWW) cut to ‘perform at Oppenheimer. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) had three ratings changes today: maintained as ‘neutral’ with target price cut to $190 at Credit Suisse; maintained ‘outperform’ but estimates cut at Baird; and target price lowered to $225 at Jefferies.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Amazon.com is down -8.2% at $178.51; Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) is up 8.24% at $37.18; Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET) is up 3.3% at $45.13; Corinthian Colleges Inc. (NASDAQ: COCO) is up nearly 34% at $4.05; Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) is up 3.8% at $50.13, after posting a new 52-week high of $50.35 earlier today; Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN) is up nearly 14% at $45.70; Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: MPC) is up nearly 10% at $41.98; Northrup Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) is up 2.22% at $59.34; and Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) is up 14% at $61.93.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Key Tronic Corp. (NASDAQ: KTCC) is up nearly 37% at $8.53, after posting a new 52-week high of $8.74 earlier today. The computer peripherals maker posted better-than-expected earnings and revenues after markets closed last night.

Sangamo BioSciences Inc. (NASDAQ: SGMO) is up more than 21% at $4.19. The pharmaceutical maker has announced a collaboration with Shire plc (NASDAQ: SHPGY) to develop a hemophilia treatment.

Medivation Inc. (NASDAQ: MDVN) is up more than 21% at $67.26, after posting a new 52-week high of $70.87 earlier today. The development stage drug maker has reported highly positive results on a test of its late-stage prostate cancer treatment. We have more coverage here.

JDA Software Group Inc. (NASDAQ: JDAS) is down more than -17% at $24.39. The software maker issued a fairly weak quarterly report and continuing investor wariness remains over an SEC investigation of the company’s accounting practices.

IXYS Corp. (NASDAQ: IXYS) is down more than 14% at $11.76. The integrated circuit maker posted poor quarterly numbers after markets closed last night.

Stay tuned for Thursday. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is speaking at 10:00 a.m. and Dallas Fed president Richard Fisher is speaking in the evening. We have noted the following events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

It seems that most investors have started adding income or dividend reinvestment plans to their portfolios by using dividend stocks. With the yields of the 10-Year Treasury close to 2% and the 30-Year Treasury close to 3%, investors are looking elsewhere for investment income. 24/7 Wall St. has compiled its own 2012 Model Dividend Portfolio. It has some new names and some deletions from prior dividend lists due to price appreciation or fundamental changes.

It turns out that many stocks with high dividend yields are now more attractive than sovereign debt in the U.S. and abroad. Part of the allure, besides income or reinvestment, is that dividend stocks often hold up better than other investments during jittery markets. It is hard to imagine, but the high-yield utility sector was one of the top performers of the S&P in 2011. In some cases, half of an investor’s total return through time may come from dividends. Warren Buffett generally picks dividend-paying companies for Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) after following some of the principles of Benjamin Graham.

The 24/7 Wall St. 2012 Model Dividend Portfolio includes the following stocks: American Electric Power Co., Inc. (NYSE: AEP); American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK); AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T); General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE); Government Properties Income Trust (NYSE: GOV); Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB); Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH); and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT).

While exchange-traded products have been avoided in the past, recent trends merit a look at the open-end or closed-end mutual funds and ETF products as follows: SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond (NYSE: JNK); JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSE: AMJ); ALPS Alerian MLP ETF (NYSE: AMLP); and PowerShares Financial Preferred (NYSE: PGF).

Two pipeline companies have agreed to a 50-50 joint venture to build a new 149-mile offshore gathering system in the Gulf of Mexico. Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) and Genesis Energy LP (NYSE: GEL) will build the system and Enterprise will be the operator.

The new gathering system will serve the Keathley Canyon area and serve producers Anadarko Petroleum Co. (NYSE: APC), Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), Eni SpA (NYSE: E), Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE: PBR), and Plains Exploration & Production Co. (NYSE: PXP). Keathley Canyon was the site of the first major oil discovery in the US Gulf once drilling was reopened following the Macondo well explosion in April 2010 that killed 11 workers on a rig operated by BP plc (NYSE: BP). Exxon, which made the discovery, has estimated the resource at 700 million barrels.

The joint venture, called the Southeast Keathley Canyon Pipeline Co. LLC (SEKCO), plans to build an 18-inch pipeline to transport 115,000 barrels/day of crude to a floating production platform and connect to Enterprise’s Poseidon pipeline system to move the oil onshore. The southeast portion of Keathley Canyon is estimated to hold about 300 million barrels of reserves.

In related transactions, Genesis is acquiring a 28% stake in the Poseidon pipeline system from Marathon Oil Corp. (NYSE: MRO), as well as a 29% stake in the Odyssey pipeline system which is majority owned and operated by Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS-A) and a 23% stake in the Eugene Island pipeline system owned by a group including Exxon, Shell, Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP). Genesis is paying about $206 million for these three acquisitions, which includes about $26 million for the value of the crude already in the pipelines. The company used its revolving credit facility to finance the purchases.

The SEKCO pipeline system is expected to be in service by mid-2014.

(NYSE: EPD) is cleaning out of its position in Energy Transfer Equity, L.P. (NYSE: ETE). The MLP has announced that it has agreed to sell 22,762,636 common units of Energy Transfer Equity, L.P. (NYSE: ETE) which are owned by an Enterprise subsidiary “in a private transaction to certain purchasers.”

The projected proceeds of the sale are put at about $825.1 million, which comes to roughly $36.24 per unit. The most recent price was $39.80 and the 52-week range is $30.78 to $47.34. Enterprise noted that the proceeds will be used for general partnership purposes, including funding growth capital projects and that the sale should close in January 2012.

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. is already massive with a $39 billion market capitalization, while Energy Transfer Equity has a market value of about $8.9 billion. Enterprise units trade at $45.52 and the consensus analyst price target objective from Thomson Reuters is $49.11. Energy Transfer Equity trades at $39.80 and the consensus price target objective.

This matters for “dividend investors” even though these MLP payouts are referred to as distributions of both income and a return of capital component. We just recently gave an MLP sector outlook for 2012 for the 24/7 Wall St. 2012 Model Dividend Portfolio.

JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSE: AMJ) and ALPS Alerian MLP ETF (NYSE: AMLP) both include these and many other key ETFs, and Kayne Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE: KYN) lists both of these MLPs in the top ten holdings with Enterprise representing 9.1% and Energy Transfer representing 4.2%.

What Enterprise did not say is that the proceeds are likely to allow the MLP to keep boosting payouts ahead. It is quarter after quarter that these MLPs keep hiking their quarterly payouts, and that is true for Enterprise as well.

This is an interesting point in time for the sector of Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). The oil and gas business could greatly unlock much of the domestic unemployment woes (and the trade balance) if the United States will develop even the hint of an energy policy. The allure of MLP distributions is continuing to attract investors who would otherwise be investing in Treasuries, bonds, CDs, and other dividend or income strategies. Our take is that MLPs have not even reached half of their potential over the next decade, and as such we have given MLPs a place in the 24/7 Wall St. 2012 Model Dividend Portfolio.

We overlaid some of the recent Fitch Ratings analysis after the individual MLPs. The aim is to show how the MLPs are valued at today as well as how they compare to their Thomson Reuters consensus price target objective and 52-week trading ranges. The individual MLPs we are including on our own are as follows: Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD); Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP); MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MWE); Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. (NYSE: PAA); Williams Partners L.P. (NYSE: WPZ); Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MMP); Buckeye Partners, L.P. (NYSE: BPL); and El Paso Pipeline Partners, L.P. (NYSE: EPB).

As the end of 2012 approaches rapidly, we wanted to take a year-end look into the sector to see where there is opportunity versus risk. We have shown the basic fundamentals of some of our top go-to names in the MLP sector and have shown a chart of the key ETF in this sector. A report from Fitch Ratings earlier this month called MLPs fairly well positioned against economic regulatory risks and has noted that the sector should generate stable operating performance and financial credit measures for 2012. The belief was that these should remain consistent with recent past performance and the outlook includes natural gas pipelines as well as crude oil and refined products pipelines.

Income and dividend investors have become more aggressively interested in MLPs after a couple of years of Treasury rates and CD rates not paying anything of substance any more for income. Retirees need cash flow from their investments in order to live. Even though these distributions paid to investors act as dividends, there is usually a mixed combination of income and a return of capital. In short, not all of the distributions paid out are treated the same by the tax-man.

Our individual valuation analysis on some of the key individual MLPs is as follows:

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) is valued at $39.2 billion now and trades at $45.00, under its consensus target of $49.11 and it has a 52-week range of $36.00 to $46.70. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was about 5.5%.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP) is valued at $26.9 billion and trades at $81.00, above its consensus target of $76.11 and against a prior 52-week range of $63.42 to $80.52. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 5.8%.

MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MWE) is valued at $4.6 billion. This unit trades at $54.20, and is under the consensus target of $61.88 and it has a 52-week range of $39.00 to $56.82. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 5.4%.

We have overlaid some of the Fitch Ratings analysis after the individual MLPs because we wanted to show you what the MLPs are valued at today as well as how they compare to their Thomson Reuters consensus price target objective and 52-week trading ranges. The individual MLPs we are including on our own are as follows: Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD); Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP); MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MWE); Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. (NYSE: PAA); Williams Partners L.P. (NYSE: WPZ); Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MMP); Buckeye Partners, L.P. (NYSE: BPL); and El Paso Pipeline Partners, L.P. (NYSE: EPB).

Our individual valuation analysis on some of the key individual MLPs is as follows:

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) is valued at $40 billion now and trades at $46.10, under its consensus target of $49.11 and it has a 52-week range of $36.00 to $46.70. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was about 5.3%.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP) is valued at $26.1 billion and trades at $78.50, above its consensus target of $76.11 and against a 52-week range of $63.42 to $79.34. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 5.9%.

MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MWE) is valued at $4.7 billion. This unit trades at $55.80, and is under the consensus target of $58.38 and it has a 52-week range of $39.00 to $56.40. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 5.3%.

Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. (NYSE: PAA) is valued at $10 billion, and its $67.30 price compares against a price target of $71.96 and its 52-week trading range is $54.90 to $67.74. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 5.9%.

Williams Partners L.P. (NYSE: WPZ) is worth some $17.3 billion and its $59.65 price compares to a target of $60.81 and a 52-week range of $44.81 to $61.22. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was about 5%.

Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MMP) is worth $7.35 billion and its $6.30 price is just under the $66.64 consensus price target. Its 52-week range is $51.00 to $65.92. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was only about 4.9%.

Buckeye Partners, L.P. (NYSE: BPL) is valued at $5.95 billion and its $63.98 price is pretty far under the consensus price target of $70.25. It has a 52-week range of $54.51 to $68.92. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 6.5%.

El Paso Pipeline Partners, L.P. (NYSE: EPB) is valued at $6.7 billion with a $32.60 share price. That is one of the largest discounts to the consensus price targets of peers as its target is $39.00. Its 52-week range is $31.34 to $38.36. The implied distribution per year based on the last payout was 6.1% based on today’s price.

Because many of the largest MLPs are so close to or above the consensus price targets, we recently gave the 24/7 Wall St. Model Dividend Portfolio some changes to focus more on the funds and ETFs (with payout rates based upon the average of the last two payouts): Kayne Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE: KYN) with a distribution of about 6.9%; JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSE: AMJ) with a distribution of about 5.2%; and ALPS Alerian MLP ETF (NYSE: AMLP) with a distribution of about 6.3%.

(NYSE: TSO) closed down nearly -10%, and Western Refining Inc. (NYSE: WNR) was off -13.5%. CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CVI) shares plunged more than -16%.

The major integrated oil companies with refining operations also experienced a down day, with Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) off about -1%, Conoco down about -3%, Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) down about -2%, and BP plc (NYSE: BP) down about -0.5%.

All this carnage over a 150,000 barrel/day pipeline that currently carries almost no oil from the Gulf Coast to the storage tanks at Cushing, Oklahoma, and will not be reversed until sometime later next year. The US consumes about 9 million barrels/day of crude just for transportation use, so less than 2% of that crude should not have such an outsized effect on refiner stocks.

The Seaway pipeline transaction, the other 50% of which is owned by Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD), was merely the trigger. Refiners’ profits have been strong in recent months as those with access to WTI and cheaper crudes have been able to price the refined output based on Brent crude input costs. The differential once reached nearly $28/barrel. The price difference closed to about $11/barrel yesterday and is around $8/barrel this morning.

Brent prices are falling, but not as fast as WTI prices are rising. The reversal of the Seaway pipeline means that landlocked WTI can now get to the Gulf Coast refineries where it will be priced the same as Brent. As the two crude prices converge, refiners will not be able to feast off that differential.

Another factor weighing against the refiners is the start-up of the Bakken Oil Express, a tank-car train running from North Dakota to Louisiana. The first train-load of crude left North Dakota on November 7th with 70,000 barrels, with current rail capacity of 100,000 barrels/day expected to increase to 250,000 barrels/day. Rail transport of crude and refined products has risen by more than 9% in the past year, to about 7,600 tank-cars/week.

The price of Brent is falling because production from Libya has ramped quickly, to reach about 700,000 barrels/day already, more than half its total production before the upheaval of last Spring. Full production of 1.3 million barrels/day could be reached before mid-2012, again keeping downward pressure on Brent pricing.

The final factor pushing WTI prices up is the tentative agreement between TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP) and the state of Nebraska on a new route for the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. This pipeline could carry up to 1.1 million barrels/day when (if) it is built. Because Canada’s synthetic crude is priced even lower than WTI, getting this pipeline into service is critical to oil sands producers who want to see the differential between synthetic crude and WTI/Brent close if not disappear altogether.

TransCanada has said that it is considering moving ahead with the section of the Keystone XL that runs from Cushing to the Gulf Coast and Enterprise has said that it will scrap plans for a new pipeline from Cushing to the Gulf but now plans to expand the Seaway pipeline to as much as 400,000 barrels/day by 2013. The two pipelines combined could carry nearly 1 million barrels/day from Cushing to the Gulf.

That million barrels represents crude that would not need to be imported by ship to the Gulf, but rather than lowering crude prices, it would raise them. That raises refiners’ input costs and raises the price of gasoline at the pump for consumers.

BP and Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS-A) probably stand to gain the most of any of the integrated oil companies from the new outlets to the Gulf. Shell is a big producer from the oil sands and BP is upgrading its refinery in Indiana to process the heavy Canadian synthetic crude, as well as owning production properties in the US midwest.

Refiners’ stocks are likely to take more losses today, though not as bad as the beating they got yesterday. Big oil companies could lose a bit more today, but the rising price for crude more than offsets any hits to their refining operations.

Each morning 24/7 Wall St. issues a summary list of key analyst upgrades, downgrades, and initiations issued by Wall Street research firms. We review these calls and other calls made throughout the week to see which stand out the most. Some are great calls that were full of insight, while others were total flops. After reviewing and filtering all of these research reports, we end up with the top analyst calls of the week.

We had many key calls that stood out this week in shares of the following: Alcatel-Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU); Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN); Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL); Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO); Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC); Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE:CXW); Dean Foods Company (NYSE: DF); Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE: EPD); Genworth Financial Inc. (NYSE: GNW); Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR); Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN); The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD); Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: MPEL); Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (NYSE: PIR); SurModics Inc. (NASDAQ: SRDX); Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NASDAQ: TEVA); Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX); and YRC Worldwide. Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW).

We have broken each of these calls out and added in color where applicable.

Alcatel-Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU) can’t get off the floor and it keeps disappointing. Shares even closed at $1.99 after seeing a year low of $1.92 on Friday. Alcatel’s chart looks almost the same as the chart of late-2008, but it cannot blame the market this time. We saw three downgrades worth noting this last week: Cut to Sell at Citigroup; Cut estimates and target at Argus; and Cut to Neutral at BofA/Merrill Lynch.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) had two big calls this last week. The main call was on Friday when Nomura issued a very unenthusiastic NEUTRAL rating. The other call came on Thursday when Zacks added it to the STRONG SELL list. With valuations still very high and with profit margins running razor-thin, it seems that at least some caution should prevail unless the holiday season is going to blow the doors of the hinges here.

Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE: EPD) is winning in part from an analyst research call and mostly on its own merits. While the MLP has stalled out in the last couple of weeks, the MLP is up 10% from the October lows and up 15% from the August lows. After seeing some fresh research notes on the company, we wanted to take a look under the hood to see if there is still upside for what is one of the three leaders of the limited partnership segment for investors.

The “units” have been extremely popular with income-oriented investors as investors look for high cash flow back into their accounts and while still looking for upside participation from the markets. This morning came a report from Zacks naming Enterprise as the “Bull of the Day” when it raised its rating to Outperform from Neutral. More important than the Zacks upgrade is that it has a $54.00 price target objective and that appears to be a “street high” target.

As far as how this compares to analyst calls elsewhere: BofA/Merrill Lynch has a “Buy” rating with a $50.00 target, Morningstar has a “Hold” rating, and S&P has a “Buy” rating. Thomson Reuters has a $48.40 consensus price target, almost 10% above the $44.13 close on Wednesday.

Here are ten things we have considered…

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK) recently announced that it reached an agreement to supply Enterprise with ethane for its proposed pipeline that connects the Marcellus Shale with the Gulf Coast.

The integration of Duncan Energy Partners LP should be beneficial for the partnership and unit holders. The partnership with Enbridge Energy Partners LP (NYSE: EEP) and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: APC) for building a pipeline called the Texas Express should address transport constraints in place today on the Gulf Coast NGL market.

It is a heavy-weight in the sector with its $37 billion market cap. The JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSE: AMJ) lists that Enterprise is the largest single holding in its underlying index with a weighting of almost 15.8%. Kayne Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE:KYN), a closed-end MLP fund, also has Enterprise as its highest weighting at 9.4% in its latest report.

Besides being a leader above many peers, its projects tend to generate stable cash flow and they tend to add to the value in the company’s existing portfolio.

The company’s opportunity in the Eagle Ford and Haynesville Acadian Expansion should be great long-term catalysts. Here is its existing pipeline and facilities system-wide map.

The company increased its quarterly distribution for the umpteenth time in a row and its dividend equivalent is currently over 5.5%.

Distributable cash flow was $856 million with a coverage ratio of 1.7, and the $341 million in retained cash flow has seemingly lowered its financing needs.

The most recent earnings report was a record for the third quarter in part due to growth in the shale regions and high demand for NGLs in the petrochemical sector. Earnings per unit were $0.55 (above a $0.50 target from Zacks) and up over 200% from a year earlier.
Revenues was up 40% from a year earlier.

Operating income in the NGL pipeline & services unit was up over 37% and gross operating income in its nat-gas processing segment rose 55%. Its gross operating income from onshore crude pipelines and services were up over 90% from a year earlier.

The area of contraction was the Offshore Pipelines & Services on the gross operating income, which came down to $53.9 million versus $68.3 million a year earlier, on what was called lower Gulf of Mexico exploration and development on federal regulations.

There are many other things to consider for Enterprise (and other MLPs) for longer term income-oriented investors. Investors in MLPs in general have to consider the tax ramifications as many quarterly payouts have to be considered “yield equivalent” rather than true income because a large portion of the payouts in the MLP sector are treated as return of capital with a variable portion often treated as income. Barron’s noted it in the “Top MLPs for Investors” but we would note that Seeking Alpha recently raised a flag of caution on the group and on Enterprise itself. We like to feature both good and bad when possible.
