Earth Day is April 22, 2012, which is this Sunday. Many Americans and many people elsewhere will be thinking about how they can be more green. Sadly, there are going to be many investors who are going to be wishing that they had their greenbacks back from investing in green energy. This not meant as any bashing over the Solyndra SNAFU nor about the value erosion in ethanol and other alternative energy sources, but the public needs to know just how much money has been lost in the exchange-traded funds and stocks that track “going green.” Then think about the large companies and the open-ended mutual funds which track green investing.

If you combine the losses in the major stocks around solar, wind, and other alternative energies, the losses are billions and billions of dollars in the American companies alone. We have outlined the profile of each exchange traded fund and we have covered some of the losses elsewhere. We have tracked 20 stocks in a portfolio over the last year in the alternative energy sector and it is shocking that only 4 of the 20 stocks are not down by more than 50% from their 52-week highs. It is even worse that 10 of the 20 stocks are down by at least 70% from their 52-week highs if you include the implosions.

We used FinViz performance metrics for the returns, or a lack of returns. We counted the assets under management directly from each ETF’s website, although we would note that outflows of assets have been seen on top of absolute losses in share price.

First Trust Global Wind Energy (AMEX: FAN) is full of mostly foreign issue holdings and even the king of wind power called Vestas in Europe only has about a 6% weighting with other names coming from Europe and China. On Friday morning it was trading at $7.17 versus a 52-week range of $7.09 to $12.20. The loss here over the last year is about 38%. Assets under management: $24.8 million

First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index (NASDAQ: QCLN) is very thinly traded and at $10.10 on Friday it has a 52-week range of $9.00 to $17.02. It aims to track the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index and is supposed to invest at least 90% of assets in common stocks that comprise the index. Some names are not exactly what investors might consider as green, but Cree, Inc. (NASDAQ: CREE) and Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) are each weighted more than 7%. The loss here is 36.6% over the last year. Assets under management: $18.7 million

Guggenheim Solar (AMEX: TAN) is full of solar stocks which are both domestic and also trade as ADRs from foreign issues which you probably know well if you follow the solar sector. It invests at least 90% of its assets in common stocks which make up the MAC Global Solar Energy Index. At $22.77, the 52-week trading range is $22.00 to $88.70 and this has lost 69% over the last year. Assets under management: $60.7 million

Market Vectors Solar Energy ETF (AMEX: KWT) is also full of solar stocks, but many do not trade in the United States. The Van Eck Global ETF aims to track the Ardour Solar Energy Index and puts at least 80% of its assets into common stocks in the index. At $3.39 it has a 52-week range of $3.29 to $13.08 and this one is down 69.9% from a year ago. Assets under management: $12.7 million

PowerShares Global Wind Energy (NASDAQ: PWND) is thinly traded and aims to track the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index. The ETF is full of companies which are not US-based and which are not even traded in the U.S. markets. The top 5 names account for more than 40% weighting and the names are China Longyuan Power Group, EDP Renovaveis, ENEL Green Power, Vestas Wind Systems, and China High Speed Transmission Equipment. At $6.49, its 52-week range is $6.41 to $11.29, and the shares are down 40.8% from a year ago. Assets under management: $13.4 million

PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (AMEX: PBW) invests in all forms of clean energy and invests in companies globally. Eight of ten of its largest weightings do trade in the U.S. and it invests 80% of its assets into common stocks in the WilderHill Clean Energy Index. At $5.15 it has a 52-week trading range of $4.80 to $10.38 and it is down over 46% over the last year. Assets under management: $181.1 million

The only good news about the current value of more than $300 million ETFs above is that they have at least not fallen anywhere near as much as some of the key companies which Americans have tried to invest their retirement and speculative money in.

First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) is down over 84% over the last year and it still has a market value of $1.8 billion. The loss here is about $8 billion over the last year in what is supposed to be America’s best solar bet. First Solar generated $2.76 billion in sales in 2011. It is currently among the worst stock charts in technology.

SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR) received a huge purchase of a majority stake by Total but that has not kept its shares from sliding and sliding. At $5.62, its 52-week range is $4.94 to $22.36, and shares are down over 63% over the last year and Total is down probably about 70% in value on this one. Its market value is now barely $650 million but it generated over $2.1 billion in sales in 2011.

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (NYSE: WFR) is down 69% over the last year and at $3.50 its 52-week range is $3.31 to $12.00. Its market value is still more than $800 million and its total revenue in 2011 was $2.71 billion. The loss is far worse when you consider that this was a $90 stock at the peak of the alternative energy and oil boom in 2008.

The losses here have been in the billions and it only scratches the surface on the alternative energy sector losses. This takes no consideration of the disappearance of Evergreen Solar, Energy Conversion, Solyndra, and Solar Trust. This also skips over the ethanol losses as well. We do not want to only seem one-sided here even if billions upon billions of real money has been lost in the alternative energy sector that is reminiscent of the losses after the dot-com bubble burst a decade ago. Some of the blame may be austerity and Chinese dumping, but investor losses do not come with an asterisk in the monthly statements.

The losses in alternative energy are massive, but oil companies have generated trillions of dollars in sales. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) is worth $401 billion in market value and sales for all of 2011 were $486.4 billion. Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) is worth about $203 billion in market value and it generated $253.7 billion in sales in 2011. This also marks the two-year anniversary of the BP PLC (NYSE: BP) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and BP generated the equivalent of $375 billion in sales in 2011.

It is sad to make jokes about losses this big, but a couple quickly come to mind:

Alternative energy stocks and ETFs have turned 401K plans into 201K or 101K plans.

How do make a small fortune? Take a large fortune and buy some alternative energy funds.

Shares in American Superconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: AMSC) have been taking a beating since early April. The company’s largest customer, China’s Sinovel, has refused to pay for $56 million in wind turbine parts it received in 2010 and has refused to accept any more shipments from American Superconductor. The company missed the filing deadline and an extension for its 2010 Form 10-K, which has led the Nasdaq to send the company a de-listing warning. How big a problem does American Superconductor really face?

Among a group of ten large wind power companies, Sinovel ranks tenth in installed megawatts, but significantly higher in market share. General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), Siemens AG (NYSE: SI), Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OTC: VWDRY), Gamesa Corp. (OTC: GCTAF), and Nordex SE (OTC: NRDXF) all have larger installed bases than Sinovel, but due to Sinovel’s presence in China its market share was second only to Vestas’s, and ahead of GE.

Among US utilities, NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE) claims the largest installed base of wind generation, with 85 wind farms and about 8,300 megawatts of generation. The AES Corp. (NYSE: AES) operates about 1,700 megawatts of wind generation globally. Utility-scale wind is on most US utilities’ radar screens for more development.

American Superconductor depended on Sinovel for about 70% of its 2010 revenues. Many of the rest of the company’s wind systems customers also came from Asia, particularly China. The US company put a lot of eggs into a single basket, and that decision has come back to haunt them.

At one time, it didn’t seem like such a bad decision. China installed more wind turbines in 2010 than any other country and has plans to install many more. And to top off the good news, Sinovel held a Shanghai IPO in March of this year and raised $1.4 billion. The company out to be able to pay a bill for $56 million.

But the issue probably revolves around technology. As a condition of doing business in China, alt-energy companies must have a Chinese partner and must share their technology with those partners. The trade-off appeals to companies like American Superconductor because it opens up a huge market at a cost that will only have to be paid sometime in the future. For American Superconductor, payday may have arrived.

One might look at the company’s current troubles and decide that this will be a good test of management’s talent and skill. So far, management has not done a very good job. Sure, they’ve lost $56 million in revenue and have lowered their revenue expectations for 2011 by a quarter. That’s no longer news, nor should a possible de-listing be news.

Is there anyone at company headquarters who knows how to play this game? The company’s wind power systems division was destined to fall behind Chinese competitors eventually. It happens all the time when US companies try to compete with Chinese companies. Nothing new here either.

Management should have been ahead of the curve though, and managed that decline. American Superconductor’s cable division has a virtual stranglehold on high-performance superconducting cable. This is the stuff that every major grid operator in the world will be ordering thousands of miles of in the not-too-distant future. This is American Superconductor’s future, not wind turbines.

The First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE: FAN) is up about 1.25% today, to $10.35, in a 52-week range of $9.30-$12.38. American Superconductor is one of the smallest holdings in this fund.

American Superconductor’s shares have risen today, by about 2.5%, to $7.79, in the first hour or so of trading. The stock’s 52-week range is $7.40-$38.88. The stock’s trailing P/E ratio is around 9, and its forward P/E is nearly 19, but these are way down from earlier this year. Results for 2011 are not likely to push those ratios up, but this is a better stock than that. Provided of course that the company’s managment stops looking in the rear-view mirror.

Alt-energy news today looks at some coming IPOs in biofuels, some comments from a hedge fund manager on clean energy, and a new design for a natural gas-fire power plant. Biofuel maker Solazyme, Inc. is expected to begin trading this week on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol ‘SZYM’. The company produces a drop-in substitute for petroleum (among other things) using a unique fermentation process. The company hopes to raise $160 million at an offering price of about $16/share. This would value the company at about $900 million.

Solazyme follows Codexis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDXS), Amyris, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMRS), and Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEVO) into a market with a lot of promises and very little else. That may sound harsh, but none of these companies makes much biofuel or much revenue from biofuel. Solazyme, like the others, plans to make nutrition and personal care products in addition to biofuels.

Another biofuel maker, Ceres, Inc., recently filed for an IPO and plans to trade on the NASDAQ under the symbol ‘CERE’. The company wants to raise $100 million to develop and market its modified seeds that are used to raise feedstocks for biofuel production. Agribusiness giant Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) owns 6.4% of Ceres.

The largest single user of petroleum products in the US is the Air Force, which has been experimenting with biofuels as a substitute for kerosene-based jet fuels. Tests of the biofuel substitute have been promising, but it costs about 10 times more than jet fuel. It is not realistic to believe that biofuel’s cost will come down by an order of magnitude in the near future. In fact, it is unlikely ever to fall that far. Oil prices will have to rise much higher than they are today, and biofuel costs will have to fall significantly before biofuels will replace jet fuel.

The hedge fund manager who predicted the collapse of Enron, Jim Chanos, told an investor conference that wind and solar energy will never be cost-effective sources of energy because they are not efficient. He especially suggested that investors dump shares of First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) and Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OTC: VWDRY).

Chanos notes that Vestas’s revenues keep falling and that the company has run afoul of certain accounting procedures. First Solar is experiencing quality control issues and negative cash flows, as well as having difficulty hiring and keeping managers with experience in the solar industry. Chanos also noted that China’s growth is propped up by a real-estate bubble and he recommends short positions there as well.

Because China now leads the world in clean energy spending, it’s not a stretch to say that companies like Vestas and First Solar, both of which have huge projects pending in China, could get some real headaches if China’s real estate bubble should pop. Such an event could see the government pull back on its grand plans for investments in green energy and put a big hurt on a number of alt energy companies.

Finally, General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) has introduced a new high-efficiency natural-gas fired plant design that can respond more quickly to fluctuations in wind and solar electricity generation. The new design, which GE calls the FlexEfficiency 50, is a 510-megawatt plant that can ramp up power by 51 megawatts/minute, reaching full capacity within 10 minutes.

The plant’s fast response time means that sudden cloudiness or stillness won’t cause system operators to substitute coal generation for those times when the wind and solar plants aren’t generating. By evening out the intermittent nature of solar and wind generation, the new design could be appealing to utilities facing renewable portfolio standards in many states. The new plants are expected to be launched first in Europe, due to regulatory uncertainty and lack of demand for new gas-fired plants in the US.

If one ETF for covering the global trend towards wind power wasn’t enough, we have the announcement of a second wind energy ETF. Invesco’s (NYSE: IVZ) PowerShares Capital Management ETF unit has announced the anticipated listing of a global wind energy portfolio. The new ETF is PowerShares Global Wind Energy Portfolio will trade under the "PWND" stock ticker on NASDAQ. This ETF is based on the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index that tracks manufacturers, developers, distributors, installers and users of energy derived from wind sources.

Just on June 18 we ran a piece describing the The First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE Arca: FAN), so it appears there will be two new fresh wind ETF’s trading in short order. On the surface, it looks like there are also going to be many overlaps within these similar ETF’s.

There was an interesting ETF launched today on the NYSE Euronext as a Wind Energy ETF. The First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE Arca: FAN) launched today. This index has a criteria based upon an equity’s market capitalization, liquidity and weighting concentration requirements. Most of the major players in this ETF are global in nature and many do not even trade in the U.S.

These are the top holdings of the index as of today’s fact sheet:
