The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 6 points to 13,239.06 (0.05%), the NASDAQ rose more than 23 points (0.75%) to 3,078.32, and the S&P 500 rose 0.40% or nearly 6 points to 1,409.75.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Arch Coal Inc. (NYSE: ACI) cut to ‘sell’ at Goldman Sachs; Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE: COF) raised to ‘buy’ at Jefferies; Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS) raised to ‘outperform’ at BMO; Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) cut to ‘underperform’ at Bernstein; and United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) raised to ‘overweight’ at JPMorgan.

Earnings reports since markets closed last Friday have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Hastings Entertainment Inc. (NASDAQ: HAST) is down -XX% at $XX; and InterOil Corp. (NYSE: IOC) is down -XX% at $XX. After markets close today Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE) and Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) are scheduled to report earnings.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) is down more than 5% at $4.64. The Chinese solar maker lowered estimates for the fourth quarter and issued soft estimates for 2012. More coverage here.

QR Energy Inc. (NYSE: QRE) is up more than 4% at $23.27. The oil & gas upstream company announced an acquisition this morning. More coverage here.

MONDAY, MARCH 5

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) has already recovered handily from when alleged accounting woes were surrounding this company.  This is the outdoor advertiser in China.  Estimates are $0.61 EPS and $225.1 million in sales.

Teavana Holdings Inc. (NYSE: TEA) remains a premium company with great products and growth, but at a price for a small tea retail empire trading at close to 40-times next year’s expected earnings.  Estimates are $0.32 EPS on $67.8 million in sales.

Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ: URBN) has recovered off of its lows but the company remains an early turnaround story.  The real question is what the growth opportunities are for the next decade compared to the growth of the last decade.  Earnings estimates are $0.20 EPS on $742.9 million in sales.

VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY) has estimates of $0.52 EPS on about $417.5 million in sales.

TUESDAY, MARCH 6

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) remains in limbo and investors are still trying to get a better grasp on its business model as far as how it will make money.  The company surprised before.  Estimates are -$0.02 EPS on almost $83 million in sales and the market value is $2.2 billion.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO) has estimates of $0.35 EPS and $1.05 billion in sales.

Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCE) has estimates of $0.89 EPS on just over $478 million in sales.

H and R Block Inc. (NYSE: HRB) is expected to report $0.05 EPS and $700 million sales, but next quarter is the tax-season money quarter and the estimates are currently $2.24 EPS on $2.11 billion in sales.  To emphasize how much the tax season matters, the entire fiscal year-end of April 2012 is expected to be $3.01 billion.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) is expected to report -$0.47 EPS and $287.6 million in sales.  While this is a homebuilder and while it has been widely followed before, this is probably not going to be a sector-mover for homebuilders.

THURSDAY, MARCH 8

A123 Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) is challenged with shares now down under $2.00 and a weak performance late in the week.  Estimates are -$0.41 EPS on almost $53.7 million in revenues.  It seems sad that lithium-ion batteries are not doing well and around $1.80 it has a 52-week range of $1.51 to $8.70.

Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) is a ‘business update’ rather than a formal earnings release but investors will be watching its guidance.  Estimates are $0.37 EPS and $426.8 million in sales.

Anheuser Busch Inbev SA (NYSE: BUD) has estimates of $0.91 EPS and $9.9 billion in sales, but keep in mind that this is now translated from Euros now that this is not a U.S.-based company.

Renren Inc. (NYSE: RENN) is down massively from its 2011 IPO but it is still very actively traded as a Facebook knock-off in China.  Renren is expected to report earnings of $0.02 EPS and $32.3 million in sales.

Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD) is expected to report earnings of $0.67 EPS and $3.5 billion in sales.

Williams Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM) is expected to report earnings of $1.13 EPS and $1.25 billion in sales.  Shares are down almost 15% from the 52-week high and the shares are still close to the consensus price target of $39.43.

We tracked unusual short selling moves, gains and drops, in the following companies: Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN); Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL); Diamond Foods, Inc. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) saw a drop in the short interest despite the building pressures we have been seeing around margins, Kindle margins, and valuations.  This short interest fell to 10,960,797 shares in mid-November versus 11,041,106 shares short at the end of October.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) saw another drop in the short interest to 9,440,115 shares short in mid-November versus 10,683,440 shares at the end of October.  This is actually the lowest short interest since mid-January.

Diamond Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) has been under increased fire for its deal delay after an accounting inquiry into payments to Walnut farmers and now due to the death of a board member that may have been integral in the situation.  The Short Interest for mid-November was up close to 10% to 12,128,071 shares, but take note: THIS WAS THE TENTH CONSECUTIVE RISE IN SHORT INTEREST!

Focus Media Holding Limited (NASDAQ: FMCN) was recently hit hard by the Murky Waters group who was short, but the increase looks big on the surface until you compare it to the past.  The short interest rose to 5.54 million shares short versus 4.27 million shares just two weeks earlier.  This was over 10 million as recently as August 31.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) remains under fire by short sellers as the mid-November short interest was 27,261,029 shares versus 24,748,979 shares at the end of October.  This was the highest reading since January 14.

Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) already had 2,919,091 shares in its short interest as its first-ever report in the short interest.  That is a highly shorted stock and it now has options.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) was recently added as a huge position by Warren Buffett, a very unusual play since Buffett has avoided tech in the past.  This was the third consecutive drop: 122.69 million shares versus 131.06 million shares.  Oddly enough, the short sellers had already made their bets without knowing a single thing about Warren Buffett’s involvement due to trade-dates versus when we knew about the position.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) saw a substantial drop in the short interest from late October to mid-November: 8,870,727 shares versus 9,285,174 shares, although trading volume was down lower so the days to cover was actually higher at 1.35 days versus 1.0 days.

Research in Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM) saw a small drop in the short interest yet this remained the second highest in months and months.  The mid-November short interest was 44,658,200 shares versus 46,371,993 in late October.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) started as ‘hold’ at ThinkEquity. Other ratings actions included Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) raised to ‘outperform’ at BMO and raised to buy at Citigroup; Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) re-initiated as ‘sell’ with a $60 price target at Canaccord Genuity; Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) cut to ‘market perform’ at BMO; Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN) cut to ‘neutral’ at Janney Capital; and Cree Inc. (NASDAQ: CREE) maintained as ‘buy’ with $33 target price at Canaccord Genuity.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK) is up nearly 7.5%, at $3.04; Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) is down about -5.6%, at $31.74; Hormel Foods Corp. (NYSE: HRL) is a fraction at $28.82; Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE: STP) is up more than 17%, at $2.62; and Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BRCD) is up more than 13%, at $5.08.

Be sure to check our story on the dismal showing of the Chinese solar stocks and then try to figure out why LDK and STP shares are up today. Investors have got to believe the stocks have hit bottom. Perhaps, but LDK is pretty shaky, regardless of investors’ hopes.

Frontline Ltd. (NYSE: FRO) is down nearly -41%, at $3.07, after posting a new 52-week low of $2.97 earlier today. The company reported awful earnings and said that it would either need to restructure or go out of business.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) is down nearly -15%, at $1.59, a penny more than a new 52-week low set earlier today. The company is dogged by liquidity and cash flow concerns.

Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) is down nearly -13.5%, at $20.40, after posting a new post-IPO low of $20.03 earlier today. Apparently investors have figured out that there are other companies competing hard in the same space and that there are few barriers to keep more competitors out.

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) is up more than 15%, at $17.80. The company was torched yesterday by allegations of mis-statements related its reporting. The CEO disputed yesterday’s allegations in a conference call today, and reiterated the company’s intention to continue buying back shares.

Royale Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: ROYL) is up nearly 12%, at $3.27. The company announced a new gas well flowing at 3 million cubic feet/day and said that it would begin selling the gas within 2 weeks.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) is actually indicated higher this morning by over 1% at $5.57 despite reports that it has been warned by regulators to bolster its financial position.

Brocade Communications Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BRCD) may have turned in a net loss after items and options, but non-GAAP earnings were $0.16 EPS and $550 million versus estimates of $0.14 EPS and $527.4 million.  Shares were up 6% last night and the $4.48 close of Monday is still up 6.7% at $4.78 on Tuesday morning. 

Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) reported that normalized earnings were down nominally from a year earlier at $0.82 EPS and that sales fell 1% to $2.16 billion; estimates were $0.79 EPS on $2.2 billion in sales.

Chico’s FAS, Inc. (NYSE: CHS) reported that its third-quarter earnings was $0.16 EPS but after $0.02 in acquisition costs, while estimates were $0.20 EPS.  Sales were $538.5 million versus estimates of $548.5 million. Same-store sales in the quarter rose 3.7% versus 5% or more expected and it turned in another $0.05 dividend for a 1.8% or so dividend yield.

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) was crushed yesterday with roughly a 40% drop after short seller Muddy Waters raised concerns about the company.  The company has denied the allegations and said that the information provided was misrepresented.  Shares are trading up 12% at $17.40 so far this morning, but this is a fluid situation and the “Muddy Waters” stocks tend to remain highly volatile for a period after a report of this sort is issued.

Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (NYSE: EGPT) has not traded but trading on the Egyptian Exchange was halted after a 4.5% broad market drop due to continues protests and violence in Cairo after reports of dozens of deaths.

Harman International (NYSE: HAR) had its CEO featured on a Jim Cramer interview last night and Cramer said it is now getting to be a bargain at barely 10-times earnings with 20% growth possibilities.  Zacks also named it the value stock of the day this morning. 

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) is now down 1% at $26.59 despite having been up almost 4% after earnings.  Some wanted a better path to a return of growth but frankly the report and even the lower guidance should have been enough to quell at least some fears about the company.

Jack in the Box Inc. (NASDAQ: JACK) was up 4% in the after-hours on Monday after beating earnings estimates with higher same-store sales. Volume is very light and the stock is only indicated up 1% so far in early bird trading.

Medtronic Inc. (NYSE: MDT) has reported earnings of $0.84 EPS adjusted on $4.13 billion in sales; estimates were $0.82 EPS and $4.1 billion in sales. The medical devices giant has guided its fiscal year (April-2012) to $3.43 to $3.50 EPS versus estimates of $3.44 EPS.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) had its secondary and placement offering announcement last night and now shares are getting hit all over again after a SELL rating was slapped on the stock.  Netflix is trading down 5.2% at $70.60 in active trading.

Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: SNDA) is getting acquired after receiving a “going private” letter a month ago.  Monday’s ADS close in New York was $39.39 and the buyout price $41.35 per ADS.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $500 price target at Credit Suisse. Other ratings actions included DeVry, Inc. (NYSE: DV) cut to ‘underperform’ and ‘Bear of the Day’ at Zack’s; Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) raised to ‘buy’ at Argus; Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $72 price target at Argus; Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) cut to ‘neutral’ at JPMorgan; and Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) raised to ‘overweight’ at Barclays.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Hastings Entertainment Inc. (NASDAQ: HAST) was down more than -13%, at $1.65, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.55; Tech Data Corp. (NASDAQ: TECD) was down -0.9%, at $47.47, and Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN) was up about 0.3% at $19.51. We took a closer look at Tech Data’s earnings earlier today.

After markets close today and before they re-open for tomorrow, there will be an avalanche of earnings reports. Perhaps the most closely watched will be Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and a half dozen Chinese solar PV makers: JinkoSolar Holding Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO), LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), and Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP). Shares in all these solar makers are down today, as investors anticipate the bad news that’s coming.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

LinkedIn Corp. (NASDAQ: LNKD) is down more than -4%, at $68.95. The company’s 180-day lock-up period ended today, adding another 24 million shares of the company available for sale. LinkedIn tied up another 56 million shares for an additional 90 days or the damage could have been worse.

Pharmasset, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRUS) is up nearly 85%, at $134.03, after hitting a new 52-week high of $135. The company has agreed to be acquired by Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) for $11 billion.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) is down nearly -9.7%, at $36.02, after posting a new 52-week low of $34.45. Investors tend to believe that Gilead is paying too much for Pharmasset.

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) is down nearly -39%, at $15.56. The Chinese advertising company is the target of a report by short-selling firm Muddy Waters alleging that Focus Media has signififcantly overstated the number of screens in its LCD network.

Global Education and Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: GEDU) is up more than 97%, at $10.60, after posting a new 52-week high of $10.70. The company is being acquired by Pearson plc, owner of the Financial Times newspaper and other media properties.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) is up more than 10%, at $55.02. The company received USDA approval for its eye drug Eylea.

Zillow, Inc. (NYSE: Z) is down more than -13%, at $23.52, after posting a new 52-week low of $22.55. There is no specific news about the company, but, like LinkedIn, a pile of shares will be available on the market when the company’s lock-up period ends in about another two months.

Other gainers early this morning are Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN), Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (AMEX: NAK), and Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM).

Yahoo Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) is getting a boost from statements from China’s Jack Ma, founder of the Alibaba e-commerce site. Yahoo owns about 40% of Alibaba and Ma has made several offers to buy back that stake, all of which have been rebuffed by Yahoo. Alibaba would acquire all of Yahoo if Ma has his way. Yahoo’s shares opened up 4%, at $13.70, in a 52-week range of $11.09-$18.84. Volume is fairly heavy.

Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) opened higher this morning as well, following a Morgan Stanley analyst’s ‘tactical Buy’ on Netflix shares. The shares were already rated at long-term ‘Overweight’, but the recent dumping of Netflix shares has strengthened the stock’s valuation. The stock’s forward P/E is 17.91, much lower than its trailing P/E of 29.63, and the price/book ratio is 17.82. Not exactly bargain rates, but getting there if investors believe that Netflix’s streaming plan is going to be a winner. Shares opened up nearly 2%, and are trading up about 2.7% a half-hour later, at $116.34, in a 52-week range of $107.63-$304.79. Volume is heavy.

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) reaffirmed its third-quarter guidance and increased its share buyback program from $450 million to $650 million through December 2013. The Chinese media company guided net revenues at $175-$177 million and non-GAAP net income at $68-$70 million. The stock opened up about 3.5% and is trading now at $18.21, up more than 8%, in a 52-week range of $16.54-$37.58. Volume is very heavy.

Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) opened about 2.3% higher this morning on higher gold prices. Gold is up more than $35/ounce, to $1,656/ounce. One analyst thinks that gold prices have hit bottom and are on their way back up, with large miners like Newmont best positioned to benefit. Newmont shares are now trading up nearly 4%, at $65.45, in a 52-week range of $50.05-$71.25. Volume is about normal.

Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (AMEX: NAK) opened nearly flat this morning, but has since risen by about 1.5%. Another gold miner, although a much more prospective stock than Newmont, that is getting a boost from rising gold prices. The stock is trading at $5.44, after tumbling to a new 52-week low this morning of $5.34. The 52-week high is $21.76.

Just for comparison, the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) is up about 1.8%, at $56.19, in a 52-week range of $51.10-$66.98. Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) has estimates of $0.37 EPS and $162.7 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.43 EPS and $174 million in revenues.  Shares are trading around $28.02 and the 52-week trading range is $17.71 to $37.58.  So far, Focus has managed to avoid the China bashing trades because it is more established and investors believe that it is one of the real-deal companies.  Valuations still remain high but that is because growth expectations remain here for the long-term.

(NASDAQ: COCO) has estimates of $0.11 EPS and $427.6 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.15 EPS and $427.02 million in revenues.  Shares are trading around $2.36 and the 52-week trading range is $2.315 (hit on Friday) to $7,35.  Just another down and out education stock.

H J Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ) has estimates of $0.76 EPS and $2.78 billion in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.85 EPS and $2.89 billion in revenues.  Shares are trading around $52.20 and the 52-week trading range is $45.52 to $55.00.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) has estimates of $0.47 EPS and $599.44 million in revenues; next quarter estimates are $0.60 EPS and $644.43 million in revenues.  Shares are trading around $13.75 and the 52-week trading range is $12.75 (hit Friday) to $31.89.  What can the solar sector look forward to right now?

Williams Sonoma Inc.
