Gold Fields Drops Pursuit of New Capital (GFI)

Gold ImageGold Fields Ltd. (NYSE: GFI) has just filed to withdraw a securities shelf registration statement.  It lists circumstances in the securities markets, although that seems a tad odd when you consider that the market has been willing to gobble up secondary offerings since we recovered off the lows.

Gold’s Value Without Fear & Inflation (GLD, GDX, ABX, GFI, GG, NEM)

gold-image3The recent move in gold may be saying something about how to value the commodity in an environment of low inflation and in an environment where fear brings less of a premium.  The London gold price today is down around $920/ounce. That’s about $25/ounce lower than yesterday’s close and gold had been down about $30/ounce earlier.  In fact, that decline reflects what may be a topping trend in gold prices for the last 30 days.  For the past year gold prices have trended upward, but the last thirty days have turned down. The SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) ETF is almost flat for the past 30 days and for the past year. The Market Vectors Gold Miners Index (NYSE: GDX) is down about 20% for the year and about flat for the last 30 days.

Newmont beat EPS estimates by a penny and missed revenue estimates by about $60 million. Gold Fields did a bit worse: it missed EPS estimates of $0.05, reporting just $0.01, and missed revenue estimates of $745.66 million, hitting $740 million.

Gold Fields Underscores Woes of Gold Sector (GFI, NEM, GG, ABX, AU, GLD, GDX)

Gold_pic_2South African gold miner Gold Fields Limited (NYSE:GFI) posted its fiscal year 2008 earnings today. The company has been hit hard by higher costs, lower production, and a cave-in that killed eight miners. The company reported net profit for the year of $662.6 million on production of about 3.64 million ounces of gold.  What is most interesting here is that the issues inside the company may offer some great insight to the problems inside other global gold miners.

52-Week Low Club (ELY, GHS, GE, GM, GFI, MRK, Q, SHLD, JAVA, TSCM, VIA.B, CBS, AMR, AAI, DAL, UAUA)

Today’s 52-week low list was full of some of the usual suspects, and you can count airlines as the top group of 52-week lows after that breather in oil prices did not hold.  There were also many other stocks that hit 52-week lows today, and we didn’t even bother including any of the usual suspects in financials.  Here is a sample of the 200+ we saw today:

  • Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) is seeing the same old same old, fewer golf club and accessories being bought as consumers are strapped and have to actually work rather than play golf.
  • Gatehouse Media (NYSE: GHS) keeps sliding… is Chapter 11 near?
  • General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is getting farther and farther away from that $33.75 fair value we assigned for the end of 2008.
  • General Motors (NYSE: GM) is still appearing here, poorer consumers can’t qualify for new cars.
  • Gold Fields Ltd. (NYSE: GFI) is a surprise with high gold prices.
  • Merck Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK)
  • Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q), wasn’t too long ago they juiced a huge dividend.
  • Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD) hit a 52-week low but that didn’t hold.
  • Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) is learning that the reverse stock split game isn’t a winning formula.
  • TheStreet.com (NASDAQ: TSCM) as financial subscribers may be less willing to shell out hundreds of dollars if their bullish investments have a hard time being that bullish.
  • Viacom (NYSE: VIA.B) and CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) as Sumner Redstone can’t save a crummy environment.

This list was far longer looking than you would guess by this short review.  Here are some of the airlines that hit new 52-week lows:

  • Airtran Holdings Inc. (NYSE: AAI), AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR), Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), and UAL Corp. (NASDAQ: UAUA).

Goldman Sachs Hints At $1,000 Gold Potential & Weaker Dollar (ABX, GLD, NEM, AU, BVN, GFI, FCX)

Goldman Sachs is RAISING ITS 2008 GOLD FORECASTS factoring for a recession in the U.S. in both Q2 and Q3 2008, leading to a weaker U.S. Dollar target of $1.51/Euro (up from $1.35) over the next six months.  The prior $800/ounce gold target is now put at an average of $915/ounce for all of 2008, with an exit 2008 commodity price of $850 (up from $825 prior).  The call is based on support from investment demand, purchases from emerging market central banks, and the ongoing declining mine supplies.  Goldman Sachs is also raising its 2009 and 2010 gold prices:

  • 2009 prices are now expected to be $870/ounce (up from $852);
  • 2010 prices are now expected to be $940/ounce (up from $907);

Near-term Goldman Sachs notes a possibility of a spike past $1,000.00 that could be the effect of further credit events and increases in oil prices.

Below is a summary of some of the equity calls from Goldman Sachs on its gold stock sector coverage:

  • Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX) is Goldman Sachs’ TOP PICK as a defensive and non consumer-sensitive pick within its basic materials coverage.  Its estimates were only raised 1 penny to $2.01 EPS this year but next year’s EPS is now targeted at $4.00 (up from $3.20 prior).  This was recently also Jim Cramer’s top gold pick.
  • Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) (neutral rated) estimates were raised from $1.31 EPS to $1.33 and next year from $1.94 to $2.76.
  • The new estimates for AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (NYSE: AU) (neutral rated) are $1.61 EPS from $1.57 for this year and $3.38 from $3.16 for next year.
  • Compania de Minas Buenaventura SA (NYSE: BVN) ADR’s (sell rated) are seeing this year’s EPS estimates raised to $2.54 from $2.50 and next year’s EPS estimates raised to $4.43 from $3.55.
  • Gold Fields Ltd. (NYSE: GFI) (Buy rated) estimates are being raised to $0.87 EPS from $0.69 this year and raised to $1.54 EPS from $1.39 next year.
  • Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX) (Buy rated) is seeing the estimate for this year down by 1 penny to $8.49, but the EPS estimate for next year is being raised to $10.03 from $9.75.

Traders can also look at the streetTRACKS Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) as the ETN (ETF) in the sector.  It trades at roughly one-tenth the price of gold bullion after trust expenses and fees.

Many traders thought that first $100 OIL super-spike price wasridiculous at the time, but then as prices soared and all of a suddenthe hiked and raised $135 OIL super-spike price didn’t get as muchcriticism.  For inflation’s sake, let’s hope Goldman Sachs proprietarytraders don’t go out on a massive buying spree.

The Week of Buyout Picks (April 9-13, 2007)

Stock Tickers: GOOG, AQNT, VCLK, TFSM, MSFT, YHOO, TWX, SLM, NNI, FMD, MEDI,HAL, WHT, MEH, AAI, COT, IPS, PALM, DELL, NFI, BCE, AA, DOW, WYN, NDAQ,GFI, KR, ABN, BNI, DCX

This week was a huge week for the all of the buyout investors and speculators.  There were more ongoing discussions being reported in the media than you could imagine.  In a world of private equity gone wild, its hard to not be a bit cynical on the raw number of these.  This is also after Google (GOOG) announced it would pay $3.1 Billion to acquire the master online advertising company DoubleClick.

Since the Google buyout of DoubleClick you might as well go ahead and throw these three into the hat: aQuantive (AQNT), ValueClick (VCLK), and 24/7 Real Media (TFSM).  We addressed these back pre-market on April 2 when the DoubleClick buyout was starting to surface.  Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo! (YHOO), and even Time Warner’s (TWX) AOL unit may have to all look after these companies now that they let Google takeover DoubleClick.

Sallie Mae (SLM)….media saying it could go to private equity, of course.  This even has Nelnet(NNI) and First Marblehead (FMD) up in hopes that if one student loancompany gets gobbled it means the others could too (or at least maybethe worst could be behind)…. who knows.

MedImmune (MEDI) exploring alternatives…."put itself up for sale."

Halliburton (HAL) for Weatherford (WFT)….WFT up 3% today as a result.

Midwest Air (MEH) snubbing Airtran (AAI) again, Airtran says the bid is high enough.  Do you believe them?

Cott (COT) in talks with private equity firms on a Cadbury Beverage combination…..stock up 28%…."Welcome Back Cot….."

IPSCO (IPS)….up $20 since earlier in the week, company confirmed "talks that could lead to a sale," but not with whom…..

Palm (PALM) re-rumored as potential bait for Dell (DELL), these rumors just won’t die.

Novastar Financial (NFI) exploring options….a Takeunder for subprime slime?

Bell Canada (BCE) now under potential takeouts by the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, so to speak.

Alcoa (AA) survived its earnings after a crummy history…..many think this one still gets gobbled…..

Dow Chemical (DOW) rumors of a private equity buyout just won’t die, even if they deny the rumor and fire 2 executives for "holdingunauthorized talks" with outside parties.

Wyndham Worldwide (WYN) could be the next buyout for its valueaccording to Cramer, as the only Cendant piece that hasn’t made thegrade.

Kroger (KR) denied it is interested in going private…..maybe WallStreet recalls that grocery store margins are low.  The good news isthat you can now get a huge portion of the items you can at WholeFoods, without the "Whole Paycheck" price.

NASDAQ (NDAQ) held talks with the Oslo Stock Exchange.  Supposedly nodeal is imminent, but right now if you are an exchange you arebasically takeover bait (hence, our BAIT SHOP).

ABN AMRO (ABN) still on deck…..who, what, when, where????? Barclays (BCS)?

Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI) went up on what may have been a fake "buyout rumor or interest" from a Mr. Pastorini…..can you say "Weird?"

Interest in rails after Warren Buffett disclosed stake in BurlingtonNorthern Santa Fe Corp (BNI)….looks like Buffett feels differentlyabout rail companies than airline companies.

Magna International confirmed its role in ongoing Chrysler talks, part of DaimlerChrysler (DCX).

Rumor Friday (APR 13, 2007)

Stock Tickers: SLM, NNI, FMD, MEDI, HAL, WHT, MEH, AAI, COT, IPS, PALM, DELL, NFI, BCE, AA, DOW, WYN, NDAQ, GFI, KR, ABN, BNI, DCX

What preceeds "Merger Monday"?  The answer isn’t really Sunday.  It’s "Rumor Friday," of course.

This week we even heard about private equity guys admitting the deals are getting crazy because of the financing available.  By the size of this list, you can tell that there is no way under the sun that these can all occur.  It’s truly an M&A world gone wild.  Oh well, here is the list of stocks that have been rumored to be in merger discussions or potential targets this week, and there are probably a dozen or more others:
