It is rare for one of America’s largest companies to lose a third or more of its sales in a brief time. When it happens, it is usually either because of market or economic forces, or because of a designed refocusing. 24/7 Wall St. identified the eight largest American companies whose revenue fell the most in the past five years and analyzed the reasons behind the drops.

Read America’s Ten Shrinking Corporate Giants

Large companies can lose a significant amount of their revenues because they get into a great deal of financial trouble. A company may lose part of its customer base quickly because of economic forces, or it may be part of a financial catastrophe. As a result, the company’s revenue declines, and it begins to post large losses. In cases like these, companies often are forced to sell divisions to fund their survival. Alternatively, companies may close some of their operations that drain capital. General Motors and Citigroup are good examples of this category. Each moved from relative prosperity to difficulty in a very short period.

The other reason large companies shrink quickly is by design. The management of a corporation created by merger or acquisition activity may find that some of its pieces no longer fit together. One division may grow at a much higher or slower rate compared to others. Also, the way the stock market values one part of a large corporation may change because it is in a category Wall Street no longer favors. That, in turn, becomes a burden on the stock price of the entire enterprise. Telecom hardware company Motorola Solutions and media giant Time Warner fall into this category. Each is smaller than it was five years ago because it spun out a major business.

24/7 Wall St. used Capital IQ to screen the largest companies in America based on total revenue in 2006. We then screened for those that had the largest drops in total revenue between 2006 and 2010. Most of the eight companies on this list lost a third of their total revenue over the period, and some lost more than half. The list is ranked by total revenue loss from greatest to least.

This is 24/7 Wall St.’s list of America’s Shrinking Corporate Giants

All three major equity indexes opened lower this morning and while all have tracked back to last night’s close, only the Nasdaq Composite has managed to wobble to a small gain for the day. The stalled negotiations between Greece and its bondholders are weighing down European markets and the effects are felt on this side of the Atlantic. Earnings reports haven’t boosted the market at all today, even though some have been quite good. The euro has hit $1.30 again. In commodities, WTI crude oil is down -0.51% at $99.07/barrel and Brent crude is down -0.36% at $110.18/barrel. Gold closed off -0.77% at $1,665.30/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 33 points to12,675.75 (-0.26%), the NASDAQ rose just 2 points (0.09%) to 2,786.64, and the S&P 500 fell -0.10% or just more than 1 point to 1,314.63.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) maintained as ‘outperform’ with a $100 target price at Credit Suisse; Pan American Silver Corp. (NASDAQ: PAAS) maintained as ‘outperform’ but estimates lowered at Credit Suisse; Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) maintained as ‘buy’ but target price lowered to $54 at Argus; Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) reiterated as ‘buy’ and target price raised to $51 at Argus; ;and Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: KORS) started as ‘overweight’ at Morgan Stanley, as ‘outperform’ at Baird, and as ‘buy’ at Goldman Sachs.

Earnings reports since markets closed on last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Air Products and Chemicals Inc. (NYSE: APD) is down nearly -3% at $87.29; Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI) is down -0.57% at $47.46; Clearwire Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) is up 2% at $1.79; EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC) is up 6.7% at $25.01; Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) is up 6.2% at $36.85; CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX) is down -3.5% at $21.89; and Zions Bancorp. (NYSE: ZION) is down -7.6% at $17.15. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) reports earnings after markets close today. See our coverage here.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

BioLineRx Ltd. (NASDAQ: BLRX) is up nearly 79% at $5.88 after posting a new 52-week high today of $6.87. The biopharmaceutical company has signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with a French company to develop and market its hepatitis C drug.

Lee Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: LEE) is up more than 26% at $1.39. The newspaper company has been granted permission to exit bankruptcy protection.

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: BONT) is up nearly 18% at $3.81. The department store operator has hired a new CEO who was previously the CEO at Lord & Taylor, before that chain was acquired by a Canadian company.

InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) is down nearly -20% at $35.68. The wireless technology developed has shut down its “strategic review” without finding a buyer and will continue to seek additional patent sales and licensing agreements.

Achillion Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ACHN) is up more than 17% at $10.79. The drug company, which is developing its own hepatitis C drug, is enjoying a halo effect from BioLineRx’s announcement.

The big question is whether or not the economy can hold up enough to support gains of that magnitude. China and India are both still soft, Europe is in crisis, corporate profits are slowing, and many are still very uncertain in the economy. The good side of the equation is that many corporations are still managing to grow their profits, companies are buying back stock, and they are still raising their dividends. After our peak forecast of 13,678 for the DJIA at some point in 2012, we just published the five DJIA stocks with the most implied upside but now we want to know which five of the thirty DJIA stocks may have the least appreciation opportunity for investors in 2012.

The least attractive stocks in the DJIA are The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD), McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD), The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV), Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT). We took a look at the share prices with the expected move to the Thomson Reuters consensus data on each and added color and other data on each.

The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD) might seem like a no-brainer for limited upside when you consider the poor state of the housing market. Amazingly, this one was a major performing stock at the end of 2011 and the stock was up a massive 50% from its 52-week low. It is as if the market is trying to signal a major resurgence of home improvements ahead. At $42.04, the implied upside is only 1.2% if the consensus price target from analysts of $42.55 is all that the stock can rise to. Imagine if the company starts giving really good news again.

Read Also: The Highest Yielding DJIA Stocks, The Dogs of the Dow

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) was the top DJIA performing stock in 2011, so it should be no shock at all that there is little implied upside to the consensus analyst price target. At $100.33, the consensus upside is only about 3.1% to the target of $103.48. Its shares also just at the end of 2011 hit new all-time highs and media and market pundits expect strong performance ahead to remain. if so, then analysts will have to raise their price targets. It already yields close to 3% in dividends and its payout was recently raised.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV) has been an anomaly for investors. While banks and many financial stocks have been in the gutter for 2011, it ended 2011 within just a few percent of a multi-year high. At $59.17, the Thomson Reuters consensus price target of $61.37 leaves only 3.7% implied upside and the 52-week trading range is $45.97 to $64.17. It does have a 2.8% yield. This is often considered the least visible of the thirty DJIA stocks, so maybe there is more to this story than what the analysts think.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) was the only one of the thirty DJIA stocks which ended up above its consensus price target objective. Shares closed at $40.12, about 2.5% above the Thomson Reuters target of $39.14. Still, the telecom giant has a massive 5% dividend yield and its shares just hit a 52-week at the end of last week.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is almost odd to see here because it was so unattractive for years. This time is has the least implied upside to its consensus price target from Thomson Reuters of $61.70 because its stock has been trying to make new multi-year highs. At $59.76, that leaves only about 3.2% implied upside, but it has a 2.4% dividend that should be raised very soon and its 52-week trading range is $$48.31 to $60.00. While it has a low dividend, this is actually a really high yield compared to most retail stocks. It will not be surprising if analysts start to see more upside by raising their price targets.

Before you run out thinking that all of the analysts will be right, consider how the game is played on Wall Street. As share prices rise, analysts tend to get more positive and tend to raise their price targets further. Conversely, they tend to lower expectations and price targets if share prices fall. It is just part of the game.

If the DJIA does somehow manage to hit that 12% gain to 13,678, it would seem very unlikely that these five get left in the dust.

It turns out that when you blend the targets of the 30 DJIA stocks equally, the target prices have come within about 1% in each of the past two years.

In 2010, the methodology called for a target of 11,455 and the DJIA closed out at 11,577.51 for the year. In 2011, the methodology called for a blended peak consensus of 13,042.06. While the DJIA closed 2011 up 5.5% at 12,217.56 for the year, the peak 2011 DJIA price was 12,928.50. Using stock market projections often feels like a game of horseshoes, or a bit like throwing hand grenades, because being close enough is generally all that matters. The blended DJIA price target peak for 2012, using the 24/7 Wall St. methodology is 13,678, or a gain of 11.96%.

Amazingly enough, this year’s projected figure may actually be understated because this removes the wild card performances of Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM). Bank analysts have price targets that are still much higher than current prices and these have a low weighting in the actual share price weighting of the DJIA methodology. For that reason, the 13,678 is based upon 28 components. If we included the target using our methodology with just J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) shares, we would get an expected gain of 12.9% to 13,793; but if we also include the large upside targets to Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC), then the DJIA target would be 14,035 for a gain of 14.88%.

There are caveats that have to be considered, particularly for a projected gain of almost 12% in 2012. The first is that analysts as a group are often too bullish, and the second is that this is intended to represent a peak level of 2012 rather than a year-end call. Only one of the 30 DJIA components, Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), is trading above its consensus price target from Thomson Reuters due to fresh highs in the stock. Many DJIA stocks closed well under their 52-week highs, but most consensus price targets on the 30 DJIA components would actually hit new 52-week highs in 2012 if the analysts are correct. A solid fourth quarter for U.S. stocks is part of why the analysts are still excited on individual stocks in 2012.

2011 was a very volatile year. The United States lost its prized Triple-A rating by S&P, emerging markets cooled off, the European Union went into meltdown mode, and all the while the big American companies managed to grow earnings, buy back stock at a feverish pace and even managed to grow their dividends. The last quarter for the DJIA was actually up about 12% versus 5.5% for the year. The broader market of the S&P 500 was up 11% in the fourth quarter but managed to close out the year literally 0.04 points lower than a year earlier.

The best of the 30 DJIA stocks was McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) with a gain of about 31%. It rose so much that analysts now only see about 3% upside, based on year-end price target objectives. The three highest price components helped the DJIA gain as follows: International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) rose about 27%, Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) rose almost 20%, and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) rose over 30%. Warren Buffett even bought about $10 billion worth of IBM shares.

There were also many big losers out of the 30 DJIA components. A 58% drop in Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) shares made it the worst performer of the 30 DJIA stocks. Other big losers were Alcoa, Inc. (NYSE: AA) at -43%, Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) at -38%, and even J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) was dragged lower by almost 20% as the bank stocks slid. A couple of key components were barely changed. General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) managed a small gain of almost 1.4% and Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) closed down 1.5%.

The DJIA projection methodology has come within about 1% in each of the past two years. Does it seem too good to be true for 2012? With how sensitive the economy is today, it feels like it may be too good to be true. 2011 was so volatile and the DJIA performance of 5.5% compared to basically a total wash on the S&P 500 performance. Is it fair to question a methodology that worked for the past two years? If the DJIA hits 13,678 in 2012, that would compare to a high of 12,928.50 over the past year.

There are at least some things that could drive such a bullish projection. 2012 is an election year and that has often helped stocks. Will the gridlock of today interrupt 2012? The recession is now two and a half years in the rear-view mirror. The problems at the end of 2011 are likely to act as continued headwinds in 2012. Europe is still on the border of crisis. China is not posting the blazing growth needed to drive mature economies. Many segments of the manufacturing sector have excess capacity and moderate demand. Still, traditional valuations of stocks today are very low by historic standards. Companies are still raising dividends and still repurchasing stocks.

The Dogs of the Dow have a yield of roughly 4% for 2012. The 10-Year Treasury yield closed out 2011 at only 1.87% and the 30-Year Treasury Bond closed out 2011 with a yield of only 2.89%. After a rough glance, it looks like 24 of the 30 DJIA stocks have a higher yield than the 10-Year Treasury Note, and 13 of 30 even outyield the 30-Year Treasury Bond. This sets up a scenario where income-oriented and yield-hungry investors may use the DJIA and other established dividend players as competition for income rather than buying Treasuries.

Will Ben Bernanke’s promise to keep interest rates exceptionally low through mid-2013 hold true? Even if it does hold true, by the end of 2012 that promise will have only six months or so left to it. Are not markets supposed to be price exploration mechanisms for the months and year ahead?

Of the other 30 DJIA stocks, there are some good things to look forward to and some headwinds at the same time. Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) is trying to turn itself around. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) recently gave a big revenue warning, and that may hold back more interest in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT). Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) and Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) both made good gains in 2011 despite a patent expiration cliff and less-than-exciting drug pipelines. And Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is entering 2012 after a near 14% gain and is acting like it wants to surge to new multiyear highs.

If the implied gains of almost 12% do somehow manage to come true in 2012, the implied peak target on the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) would be roughly $136.47, if the performance of the ETF matches the index performance tick for tick.

Many American companies have done incredibly well this year. A number posted extraordinary financial results in 2011. Others have launched products that revolutionized markets.

Of course, many big public corporations also did very poorly. Several nearly destroyed their business and dragged down shareholder value with it. 24/7 Wall St. combed through the S&P 500 to find the best and worst managed companies in America for 2011.

Read: The Best Run Companies In America
Read: The Worst Run Companies In America

To make a list of semifinalists, 24/7 Wall St. considered stock price, changes in earnings per share, major shifts in market share and changes in management, among other data. Once the initial screen was complete, we reviewed product launch success, financial results, success of new management and the performance of each company within its industry. The editors then sifted through the finalist to identify those that rewarded both customers and shareholders and those that caused these two groups the most harm.

Neither the best-run companies list nor the worst-run companies list includes a large number of corporations from any single industry. This indicates our methodology identifies well- and worst-managed companies regardless of the industry. Based on our criteria, the management of Starbucks did as good a job as the management of Oracle — two of the best-run companies. Similarly, Eastman Kodak management did as poorly as the management of American Airline parent AMR — two of the worst-run companies.

Stocks in homebuilders have been down so low for so long that almost anything look like up. Recent earnings releases have indicated that new orders are improving, but much of the improvement is tenuous and could easily be wiped out by cancellations. We’ve reviewe six builders — NVR Inc. (NYSE: NVR), Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL), PulteGroup Inc. (NYSE: PHM), Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV), D.R. Horton Inc. (NYSE: DHI), and Beazer Homes USA Inc. (NYSE: BZH) — to see if there is any upside potential in these stocks, and included The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) and Lowe’s Cos. Inc.(NYSE: LOW), which may be better bets.

Among the six homebuilders, only NVR had a significant jump in its target price since mid-October. The median target price for NVR is now $765, up from $728, and the stock price as of about noon today is $682.57, for an upside potential of 12.1%. That’s not a grand number, but it’s the best in the sector. Target prices for PulteGroup, D.R. Horton, Hovnanian, and Beazer did not change and the target price for Toll Brothers rose just $0.15, from $21.50 to $21.65. Not a big display of confidence in the sector.

Home Depot’s median target price rose from $40.00 to $42.00, and the stock’s current price of $40.51 implies a potential gain of 3.7%. Lowe’s median target price rose from $23.00 to $26.00, and at the current price of $25.13 the implied gain is 3.5%. Even though now is not a particularly good season for home improvement projects, either one or both of these stores could easily push through the new targets.

While the target prices did not change for five of the homebuilders, all but NVR saw share price gains of more than 30% in the last six weeks, with PulteGroup shares gaining 51%. Home Depot and Lowe’s shares are up 16% and 19%, respectively, in the same period. These share price rises for homebuilders indicate more investor interest in these stocks, analysts’ lack of enthusiasm indicates that caution remains the best policy.

None of these builders pays a dividend, with the exception of Beazer which offers investors a dividend yield of 1.2%. Home Depot’s dividend yield is 2.9%, and Lowe’s offers a dividend yield of 2.3%.

For investors who believe they have to participate in this sector, Home Depot remains the best choice, with Lowe’s the best alternative. Building — and selling — new houses is still a risky business.

C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is a company which many investors and outsiders expect to be in a transformation. The first such addition under new management is a stake and investment in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (NYSE: MSO) as a strategic alliance that will create in-store Martha Stewart shops inside the J.C. Penney locations.

MSLO has had prior product distribution deals with Macy’s, Inc. (NYSE: M) and also with K-Mart under Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD). The Macy’s deal still has many key Martha Stewart products but Martha Stewart products have lost that Kmart deal and Martha Stewart has moved a home furniture, bath, paint,, kitchen and other efforts to The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD).

Ron Johnson, the guru who was credited with launching the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) retail look, theme, and strategy, has now taken over as head of J.C. Penney and this is his first real public change of substance. Customers will get to start entering Martha Stewart stores starting in February 2013.

This is a 10-year commercial agreement where both companies will jointly develop an e-commerce site as well. MSLO is expected to receive more than $200 million from J. C. Penney over the initial 10-year contract period. Another feature of the pact is that J. C. Penney spent some $38.5 million for 11 million newly issued shares of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (at $3.50 a share) and it will now hold a 16.6% stake in MSLO and will have a seat on the board of directors.

J.C. Penney shares are down about 4 cents at $33.26 versus a 52-week trading range of $23.44 to $41.00. The real win is in Martha Stewart Omnimedia shares, where they are trading up 28% at $4.06 versus a 52-week range of $2.77 to $5.49.

In fact, many of the Fortune 100 firms are more than a century old. Almost none were founded in the past 25 years, and not a single one was founded in the past decade. Longevity is one of the keys to success for corporations that consistently have billions of dollars in sales each year. A few companies, however, break the trend. 24/7 Wall St. analyzed the Fortune 100 companies and found the 10 youngest.

Read: The Newest Fortune 100 Companies

In the past year, excitement in the press and on Wall Street centered on companies that are only a few years old. Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN), LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) and FriendFinder (NASDAQ: FFN) had little trouble raising money in the pubic capital markets. Many of those stocks have fallen since their market premiere, but analysts still expect new companies like to Zynga and Facebook to have tremendous valuations when they go public. What these companies share beyond “buzz” is that they are not only new but also small. Facebook, by most estimates, will have revenue of $4 billion this year. It is still not clear whether its social network model can be sustained as a big business, even if it does have 750 million members.

24/7 Wall St. analyzed all of the corporations on the most recent Fortune 100 list to find which of them had been founded most recently. Eight are technology companies. This is not surprising because over the past 40 years, the growth of software, PCs and portable electronic devices has been extraordinary. The other two corporations are big-box retailers — Costco (NASDAQ: COST) and Home Depot (NYSE: HD). They are part of a trend started in the 1960s by Walmart (NYSE: WMT) to build very large stores, staff them modestly and charge prices well below those available in niche stores or boutiques.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) seem to have been around for a long time. For Americans under 30, they have. However, major and sustained revenue success is linked to age, among other things. Facebook may make it onto the Fortune 100, but it will take years for its revenue to get to $20 billion or $30 billion. If it gets there, there is no guarantee it can maintain that level of sales for decades like the youngest Fortune 100 companies have.

24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 companies present on the 2011 edition of the Forbes Fortune 100. When companies merged, we looked at the founding date of each company and took the oldest. In addition to annual revenue of the most recent fiscal year, as well as Fortune 100 rank, 24/7 included the industry and number of employees, provided by Google Finance.

Strong reports from the Chicago purchasing managers index and pending home sales juiced the equity markets this morning, and the gains held up throughout the day. Part of the bounce is due to a lowering of China’s capital reserves requirements on its banks and to a weaker dollar. Crude oil prices rose nearly 2% this morning, but the EIA report of a large inventory increase sent prices back down by mid-morning. WTI crude is trading at $100.27/barrel, after posting a high this morning of $101.75/barrel. Gold is up sharply, at $1,745.30, a rise of nearly 2%. The three major indexes have all been trading more than 3% higher for virtually the whole day.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly 489 points to 12,044.55 (4.23%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 105 points (4.17%) to 2,620.34, and the S&P 500 rose 4.33% or nearly 52 points to 1,246.94.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $46 price target at Argus. Other ratings actions included Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a $94 price target at Canaccord Genuity; Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) cut to ‘underperform’ at Wedbush; Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) reiterated as ‘hold’ at Argus; Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus; and Calpine Corp. (NYSE: CPN) cut to ‘hold’ at Jefferies. See our story on Transocean’s stock offering and proposed debt offering.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO) is up 3.3%, at $13.87; The Fresh Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: TFM) is up 5.7%, at $38.73; Jos. A. Banks Clothiers, Inc. (NASDAQ: JOSB) is down -6%, at $48.09; and SeaDrill Ltd. (NYSE: SDRL) is up 6.3%, at $34.82. After markets close today, Aeropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO) and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (NYSE: KKD) will report earnings.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Zoltec Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) is up 41.5%, at $8.11. The advanced materials maker reported better-than-expected earnings after markets closed yesterday.

Advanced Analogics Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AATI) is up 32.5%, at $5.75. The power management chip maker is being acquired by Skyworks Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: SWKS) for $258.6 million, or about $6.05/share.

Patriot Coal Corp. (NYSE: PCX) is up 18.7%, at $10.30. This coal miner, like virtually all its competitors, is down about -40% for the past 12 months. There’s no news to justify today’s price jump, but the company’s thermal coal does sell well in cold weather.

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL) is up 20.3%, at $3.26. The rare earths miner made this big move on no news, but competitor Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP) did a deal with two Japanese companies to manufacture very powerful magnets in Japan for use in wind turbines and other high-tech products.

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) is up 16.6%, at $1.80. The solar PV maker is among several Chinese solar companies moving up today, no doubt as these are considered the most likely to survive a shakeout in the solar manufacturing sector.

Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFLY) is down -12%, at $27.02, after posting a new 52-week low of $26.93 earlier today. The social media company is facing intense competition for its on-line photo products.
