Newfield Exploration (NFX) Crude down $6. Bad day for oil exploration stocks. Falls to $39.98 from 52-week high of $69.77.

McDermott International (MDR) Oil and gas equipment supplier. Drops to $31.14 from 52-week high of $67.14.

Introgen Therapeutics (INGN) FDA turns down treatment application. Falls to $.50 from 52-week high of $4.85.

Hercules Offshore (HERO) Caught by collapsing oil prices. Sells down to $19.80 from 52-week high of $39.47.

Flextronics (FLEX) Concerns about rising short interest? Drops to $8.45 from 52-week high of $13.60.

We saw another exciting week full of news for key developments in drug stocks, biotech stocks, medical device stocks, and other companies involved in various aspects of health care and medicine. Below are some of the stock tickers we covered over at BioHealthInvestor.com this week:

STOCK TICKERS: ABT, BSX, MDT, JNJ, SRDX, ANPI, BAYRY, MAXY, AMGN, CRA, INGN, CELG, MRK, SNY, GSK, AKRX, ARYX

This week we saw another FDA Approval in stents as Abbott’s (NYSE: ABT) XIENCE drug-eluting coronary stent was approved for marketing. While this is causing a resurgence in stents, this space is about to become highly competitive (stocks covered: ABT, BSX, MDT, JNJ, SRDX, ANPI). Introgen (NASDAQ: INGN) has a new twist for head and neck cancer… give it a cold, literally. Celgene Corp. (NASDAQ: CELG) actually won out as a competitor’s bone marrow disease trials failed to meet expectations. Merck (NYSE: MRK) was an FDA decision winner as it gets to keep its lead on the cervical cancer vaccine market in the U.S. tied up for at least 6-months longer than it was anticipated (stocks covered: MRK, SNY, GSK).

This may be a tiny company, but a patent was awarded in bone marrow and stem cell transplants. While a biotech turned over its hemophelia treatments to a larger company, hemophelia treatments may be better off now (stocks covered: BAYRY, MAXY, AMGN). Vaccine awards are going to keep sales up at one small vaccine maker. One Alzheimer’s Disease treatment that originally had high hopes has bitten the dust. P&G walked away from a partner this week, killing a tiny biotech (stocks covered: PG, ARYX).

And on the front for reviews:

Do you remember all the hype and hopes for synthetic blood? This looks like the last player has gone on to greener pastures.
What is a good investment that has backed way off from highs that should show steady growth in the China health care sector? We evaluated one potential company for this.

These issues are more stock issues than anything else:

Celera Corporation (NASDAQ: CRA) completed its journey to independence and took its 3-letter ticker over to NASDAQ.
Bayhill Therapeutics withdrew its plans for an IPO. MS and diabetes patients will have to look elsewhere, for now.

Have a happy and safe LONG Fourth of July weekend. I think there is a new treatment on the market for burnt hand trauma from fireworks, but the FDA has it on hold until next February.

Biotechs and Related Hitting 52-Week Lows Too (BBH, AMGN, AMLN, ARNA, GERN, INGN, PGNX, SUPG)

Today has been a rough day with more 52-week lows than we can recall in quite some time. The biotechs haven’t been immune. You can even see that the Biotech HOLDRs (BBH) at $160+ are only about 2% above the 52-week lows of $157.95, while the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology (IBB) ETF at $80.29 is only about half-way in its 52-week trading range of $72.37 to $89.00. The difference is because of the composition.

Some of these stocks hit 52-week lows and recovered off of lows so they won’t have a low close. But these did all touch or breach the 52-week lows. At the end we also broke out retail stocks, financial stocks, airlines & transports, and hotels. A separate report could have been compiled for REIT’s as well, but many of those were left off because of room or volume. There were enough 52-week lows today that you might even wonder if there had been a mini-crash in the markets. Here are the 52-week lows for December 28, 2007:

These CEO’s new year’s resolutions are all the same: "In 2008 I want to keep my stock off the 52-week low lists."

Biotechs & Pharmas Bracing For ASCO Annual Meeting

This weekend we have the mother of all future cancer treatment conferences: ASCO, or The American Society of Clinical Oncology. Cancer stocks in the last few weeks have been seeing a muted response ahead of the event that biotech investors have traditionally braced for. At various points on the website you can find a full list of contributing and presenting companies. This is only a sample of the companies presenting data and it is very possible that the dates and even the companies may have changed. Also, you’ll probably start seeing news here at this ASCO News Site either late Thursday evening or Friday. Some of these dates and presentation schedules have been compiled over a multi-week period, so it is very likely that some of these will have changed.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2

Genentech (DNA) will show data with Roche on Avastin plus a chemotherapy dual-mix cocktail for first line treatment in non-small cell lung cancer patients. Later on at ASCO, a failed Avastin study for the treatment of pancreatic cancer will be shown. Some Phase III Avastin data in kidney cancer will also be presented next week. Genentech will also be showing data with partners OSI Pharmaceuticals (OSIP) and Imclone (IMCL) in later days.

Pfizer (PFE) will present data on Sutent’s safety and efficacy in Phase II liver cancer studies.

If you forgot about Dendreon (DNDN), this will be the company’s last known data presentation on Provenge after getting the FDA delay. Investors will be looking closely at any ‘New Data’ presented because much of the ongoing study data is being treated as old data.

Arqule (ARQL) and Exelixis (EXEL) are presenting data as well on molecules that are deemed cancer targets

Others to watch are Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX) and partner Bayer (BAY), because their liver cancer studies are under concern over toxicity. Its Nexavar data will be presented later for liver cancer Phase III.

Amgen (AMGN) will have study posters up discussing safety of its anemia treatment Aranesp that many patients have to use. It is no secret that the reimbursement rates, effectiveness and safety, and the dosage have been under fire and worse for some time now. Most of the damage has been done and many feel that more cautionary and worrisome days are ahead.

Immunogen (IMGN) will be releasing some preliminary data on Herceptin-DM1 in its Genentech pact for the treatment of breast cancer.

SUNDAY, JUNE 3

Telik (TELK) will post some data in the studies of Tecyta in overian cancer, which failed to meet endpoints.

Celgene (CELG) will be presenting data on a Revlimid-plus study in multiple myeloma patients.

Regeneron (REGN) will show Phase II data on VEGF-TRAP for advancedtreatment-resistant ovarian cancer and another phase II study innon-small cell lung cancer.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) will present preliminary Phase III datadesigned to be a fight against advanced and chemo-refractory metastaticbreast cancer.

GlaxoSmithkline (GSK) will also present Phase III Tykerb studies for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

Abbott Laboratories (ABT) will present data on targeting pathways to kill tumor cells.

NEXT WEEK

GPC Biotech (GPCB) will post some new data in its Phase III prostate cancer studies.

Imclone (IMCL) will release details of a failed study of Erbitux for pancreatic cancer.

Merck (MRK) will discuss future molecular targets for pediatric cancer.

Pfizer (PFE) will be posting further Phase II data on monoclonal antibodies for the possible treatment of melanoma.

Medarex (MEDX) will post Phase II data on melanoma studies.

Introgen (INGN) will post Advexin data for the marking of head and neck cancers.

deCODE Genetics (DCGN) will present on the ethical and financial needs in cancer genetics.

A sample of other stocks to watch in the sector are Cytogen (CYTO),Monogram Bio (MGRM), Telik (TELK), Threshold Pharmaceuticals (THLD),NeoPharm (NEOL), and Invitrogen (IVGN). There are many many morecompanies that will be presenting.
