Walt Disney, Jobs On Its Board, Buys iPhone App Company

Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), sits on the board of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) That means the entertainment company is well aware of the power of Apple’s applications software distribution system on the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Disney announced yesterday that it will buy iPhone game supplier firm Tapulus which has 35 million users. Its most widely used game, “Tap Tap Revenge”, has been played more that 1 billion times.According to Reuters, Tapulous is profitable and has about $1 million in revenue per month.

Disney said that Tapulous strengthens the company’s portfolio of games and entertainment offerings in the fast-growing mobile arena. Disney already has a large and quickly growing business in mobile interactive media.

Disney and old-line media companies are in the same race. They must use their brands and content to push into the world of handheld devices that have become a new platform for entertainment in addition to the TV and PC. Firms including Tapulous, Clickgamer, and Gameloft, none of which are part of major media companies, are dominating game sales made from the Apple Apps store.

Over three billion downloads have been made from the App store, many of them entertainment and game applications. More than a third of the top 25 downloads for the store are games.

The acquisition of these game companies by larger entertainment firms will likely quicken as the larger firms buy what they cannot quickly and successfully build.

IPO FILING: China Time Share Media (CTSM)

China Time Share Media Co. Ltd has filed to raise up to $75 million in an initial public offering. The Chinese advertising service provider has applied to take "CTSM" as its NASDAQ stock ticker. No share count nor any share price was given. Morgan Stanley and UBS are the lead underwriters, and China International Capital and Susquehanna Financial Group are co-managers.

China Time Share Media’s operations include ownership of and representation of anetwork of outdoor advertisements from billboards to LCD’s to streetfurniture transit displays. Its 2007 revenue was $41.9million, representing CAGR of 93.9% from 2005. In the six months endedJune 30, 2008, its revenue increased to $40.0 million and net income jumped to $4.1 million.

IPO Filings: Phenomix; MYR Group

PHENOMIX CORP. submitted an IPO filing last Friday. The filing shows for a sale of up to $86,250,000 in securities, although this number is merely for filing purposes. The underwriting group is listed as Morgan Stanley, Oppenheimer and Co., Credit Suisse, and Pacific Growth Equities. Phenomix Corp. has applied for the stock ticker “PHMX” on NASDAQ.

Phenomix Corp. is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on product candidates that improve existing therapies as well as other product candidates in clinical development. Their lead product candidate is PHX1149, an oral, once-daily treatment for Type 2 diabetes, and is currently in Phase 2b clinical trials with expected Phase 3 clinical trials to begin later this year. Their other product, PHX1766, is in pre-clinical development for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection and Phase 1 trials are expected to begin later in 2008. Key shareholders include JPMorgan Funds, Nomura Phase4 Ventures, and Delphi Funds.

MYR GROUP INC. submitted an IPO filing last Friday. The filing shows for a sale of up to $255,980,101 in securities, although this number is merely for filing purposes. MYR Group Inc. has applied for the stock to be listed on NASDAQ without a pre-set ticker designation.

MYR Group is a large national contractor that services the transmission and distribution sector of the electric utility industry in the United States. They contract with over 125 electric utilities, cooperatives and municipalities in this sector. Their other revenue generating sector is commercial and industrial electrical contracting services. In 2006, MYR and affiliates purchased 98% of FirstEnergy, and for the year ending 2006, MYR Group generated an estimated $535 million in pro forma revenues and a pro forma net income of $10.95 million.

Key shareholders include William Koertner, Carter Ward, ArcLight Affiliates, Goldman Sachs, and Fidelity.

Almost 100% IPO Gainer (ATHN)

How long has it been that we saw a fairly small cap IPO more than double on the opening day? Don’t count the greatest virtualization play out there, because last month it instantly became a large cap stock.

This morning’s IPO, athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATHN), came public and shares have roughly doubled today. The price range was $14.00 to $16.00, but the demand for the deal was a premium and it priced 6.286 million shares at $18.00. With 10-minutes to the close this was up 90% at $35.60 on more than 8.7 million shares.

This may be the sort of thing the IPO markets have been waiting for, particularly as we have hardly had any real IPO’s over the last month or so. Here was our brief preview. After a little ‘lulu’ IPO maybe these companies with all lower case letters in the name are the big trend………
