Rough Week For Smart Grid Players (ITRI, DGII, COMV, ENOC, ELON)

power-lines-picItron Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) is supposed to be one of the winners in the stimulus package.  The advanced metering company is known as the Smart Grid meter reader to many traders.  The company is involved in metering, data collection and utility software solutions for electric, water, and gas utilities, and it claims nearly 8,000 utilities worldwide as its customer base.  This is one of the companies deemed to be a winner under the Obama stimulus package.  Where this gets interesting is that Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII), Comverge, Inc. (NASDAQ: COMV), EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ:ENOC), and Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) are all other smart grid plays and not large caps that have had a rough week in stock prices.

Secondary Offering Weighs on Itron (ITRI)

Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced after yesterday’s close that it will sell 3.4 million shares of common stock in an at the market public secondary offering.

Yesterday’s closing price was $94.47 per share, so gross proceeds will be in the vicinity of $321 million.  Itron said it plans to use $250 million of the proceeds to repay a portion of  outstanding non-convertible debt and the rest will be used for general corporate purposes.

While this will effectively be a spot secondary in result, this is under an existing shelf filing.  The funds are expected to close on or about May 12, 2008, so shares should be sold today.  Itron produces meters that read electricity, gas, water, and heat usage for utilities; and various other associated metering products for residential, commercial and industrial, and transmission and distribution customers.

Goldman, Sachs & Co. is the sole underwriter in this offering.

Itron’s market cap was $2.9 Billion as of yesterday and as of December 31, 2008, the company had $1.578 Billion in long-term debt and total liabilities were carried as $2.29 Billion.

Itron: Lazard Still Looking For New Highs (ITRI)

Itron Inc. (NYSE: ITRI) shares are being given a positive note this morning.  Analyst Sanjay Shrestha of Lazard Capital Markets is maintaining his Buy rating and $115.00 target.  This number is based on a 25 forward multiple of $4.60 EPS targets from Lazard for forward 2009 estimates.

Shrestha noted a visit to CenterPoint on its "intelligent grid" initiative, which it does not expect the awards from that project to materialize until the latter part of 2008.  Shrestha also noted a 40,000,0000 advanced metering instrument endpoints nationwide and for those companies in the industry.  Shrestha noted that 2008 will be a year or project awards with the meaningful part of revenues and earnings from these coming in 2009 and beyond.

Please keep in mind that this is not saying there are 40 million units that Itron will win, as this appears to be more of an industry-wide total opportunity.  Itron shares are down 0.7% late morning at $87.23, and the 52-week range is $57.83 to $112.92.  A $115.00 target would be an all-time high for this stock.  Another analyst at a competing firm has a $120.00 price target and the average target is over $104.00, so this call isn’t out of the ordinary.

Backward & Forward, Cramer In 2007 To 2008

2007 was one volatile year and for now it appears that will be the norm for at least the start of 2008.  Everyone’s favorite market pundit or least liked pundit is obviously Jim Cramer.  If you love Cramer or can’t stand him it really doesn’t matter.  He signed a new multi-year deal with CNBC recently.  Here are some of his major calls this year that will still be referred to in 2008:

Here were Cramer’s TOP 9 STOCKS FOR 2007, with a call broken down for each one.  Borat would say HI FIVE on some and NOT SO NICE on others, as would be expected.  Cramer’s 14,582 year-end DJIA target…..Friday’s close was 13,365.87……although we did hit 14,279.96 on OCT11, 2007.  Cramer also gave a batch of price targets on most of theDJIA components:

Cramer’s Stock Picks FOR 5-YEARS OUT:

SOME LISTS: His list of recession proof stocks compared to ours.  We are updating our
Defensive Stocks For The First Half Of 2008" currently.  Cramer gave a huge list of companies he expects to benefit from the alternative energy traders (SGR, FWLT, BWA, OMG, FSLR, FTEK, WFR, TTEK, ZOLT, BP, SPWR, CY, CPST, ITRI)… Jim Cramer pondered which US companies China would want to acquire, about 3 months before sovereign funds started buying into US companies.  Cramer’s mortgage winners and losers…… Here were his MAJOR BULL MARKET STOCK PICKS(MHS, CVS, AGN, CELG, GENZ, CEPH, RIG, HAL, EMR, CAT, CMI, UTX, KO,PEP, CL, GS, SKS, VFC, UNP, CSX, BA), some of which are DJIAcomponents.  Cramer produced a "MUST OWN" list of stocks, many of whichare up significantly and some are down (WHR, BDK, ATI, BGC, HON, ASD, JCI, MDR, FWLT, CAT, TEX, DE, QCOM)

Cramer spent lots of time on International stocks that most US investors might not cover on their own.  He made a big call on Mercadolibre (MELI) (also BIDU, GOOG) with some emphasis on buying immediately, right before it made a huge run up.  Cramer’s Hidden Video Game Investment Perfect World (PWRD, ATVI, ERTS, VIA) was one he said could run more than 50% for 2008.  Cramer made 5 TOP CHINESE PICKS (CEO, CHL, SSW, FMCN, BIDU, GMR).  We’ll see in 2008 if any of his Canadian OIL TRUSTS get acquired in 2008 (BTE, CNE, PGH, PVX, PWE, AAV, GDI).  Cramer also went over his top picks from Europe for American investors (TOT, SI, ABB, PHG, BF)

ON TECHNOLOGY:  Cramer’s NEW HORSEMEN OF TECH…. will the list change in 2008???  Did Cramer Say $1,000.00 on Google, Or Is It $600.00? That was in May 2007.  Cramer Gave Monster Price targets to Baidu.com (BIDU, GOOG).. will these targets change in 2008? Cramer was very positive on all the GPS stocks, although we’d expect that Cramer will change his tune in 2008 now thatthe holiday madness is behind us (GRMN, UA, CROX, NVT, TRMB, SIRF).

Would it be fair not to include the Barron’s attack on Cramer from summer for those of you that criticize his every word?

ON WARREN BUFFETT…. Cramer noted that BROOKFIELD ASSET MANAGEMENT in Canada may be the next Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK/A) NYSE: BAM). Cramer reviewed 10 Warren Buffett stocks for analysis and then reviewed 10 More Warren Buffett stocks:

Will his buyout of ALCOA (AA) prediction come true in 2008??? Cramer gave a list of stocks that had bought back so much stock that they might be taking themselves private.

Top 10 Pre-Market Analyst Calls (GTOP, HAS, MAT, ITRI, MVL, RIMM, RAD, SGP)

If analysts were cowboys they’d say, "It’s getting pretty darn thin out there on the research front."  Here are the few analyst calls we are looking at today ahead of what most of Wall Street and Main Street will be treating as a 4 or 5 day weekend:

  • Genitope (NASDAQ: GTOP) downgraded to Underperform from Sector Perform at RBC.
  • Hasbro (NYSE:HAS) and Mattel (NYSE:MAT) both started as Hold at Citigroup.
  • Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI) raised to Outperform from sector Perform at RBC.
  • Marvel Enterprises (NYSE: MVL) started as Sell at Citigroup.
  • Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) raised to Outperform from Peer Perform at Bear Stearns; Goldman Sachs raised estimates.
  • Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) raised to Buy from Neutral at UBS.

Yep, that’s right.  It is really only the TOP EIGHT RESEARCH CALLS today.

Cramer’s Alternative Energy & Green Stocks (SGR, FWLT, BWA, OMG, FSLR, FTEK, WFR, TTEK, ZOLT, BP, SPWR, CY, CPST, ITRI)

On tonights MAD MONEY on CNBC, Jim Cramer wanted to pitch in on covering the green-tech stocks.  He says he has no politics on his calls because he is just looking at these as opportunities to make money.  Cramer’s green stocks are up 68% on average since he covered that Massachusetts ruling back in April.  His stocks from back then and here are his reviews now:

  • Shaw (SGR) up from $30 by 146% in nuke power infrastructure he thinks it can still double.
  • Foster Wheeler (FWLT) up 99% and being driven by non-green demand, it’s still a favorite but for another reason.
  • Borg Warner (BWA) is up 38% and still has legs in cleaner engine parts, Cramer thinks it goes higher.
  • OM Group (OMG) is actually down on refining cobalt and he said he’d have given up if last quarter wasn’t good.
  • First Solar (FSLR) was up big today on a $1 Billion contract.  Its up 170% since his recommendation and he thinks it can go higher with analysts racing each other to raise targets.  It reports Wednesday but he says it is expensive and he’s look at it speculatively.
  • Fuel-Tech (FTEK) is one that Cramer would rather sell than OM Group.
  • MEMC (WFR) is an arms merchant for solar makers in making wafers for solar panels; too good to pass it up; it’s cheap and he thinks out of all green stocks that this one is still bargain.  MEMC is his TOP PICK in the alt-en sector.
  • Tetra Tech (TTEK) is his play on the water group and he likes the last buyout with an international footprint.

He doesn’t see a single one where he thinks the run is over.  In a call-in he was also positive on Zoltek (ZOLT).  As far as BP’s (BP) initiatives in a call-in, he thinks it is an after-thought and right now it doesn’t add up right.  SunPower (SPWR) in a last call-in is one that he’s been behind and he thinks Cypress Semi (CY) is the play off it.

Another alternative energy stock an analyst said could double is Capstone Turbine (CPST) today in an unrelated report.  That was Lazard, and its analyst also defended Itron (ITRI) on recent weakness.

The Business Day In Global Warming (FPL, ITRI, PEFF, BF, MMM, CPOW, GE, YGE, AKNS, PGN, SI, STP, XOM)

This is the crus of the news regarding Global Warming and the public companies that made announcements over the last 36 hours:

FPL Group (NYSE:FPL) chairman called the Climate Bill "Well intentioned but fundamentally flawed": Lewis Hay said, “I acknowledge and applaud the willingness of key senators to try and address the important issue of global climate change. Unfortunately, the bill they have proposed, if left unchanged, would reward the country’s biggest emitters of carbon dioxide with billions of dollars of free allowances that they don’t need. Moreover, the bill contains no clear ‘safety valve,’ to ensure that we don’t inadvertently damage the economy.”

Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI) shares were hit very hard (as much as 18%) after earnings today, but Lazard Capital Markets reiterated its BUY rating and $115 price target. Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ:ESLR) shares rose over 10% after ThinkEquity raised its rating from Accumulate tp Buy" after a production facility visit.

Lazard Defending Itron (ITRI)

Sanjay Shrestha, Managing Director, Senior Analyst, Alternative Energy & Industrials at Lazard Capital Markets is maintaining his "BUY" rating on Itron Inc. (NASSDAQ:ITRI) after a big drop from earnings.  The note discusses the lowered 2007 guidance reflecting lumpiness, but with a solid outlook the weakness creates excellent buying opportunity.

"Itron reported 3Q07 revenue and operating EPS of $434 million and $0.65, versus our estimates of $430 million and $0.70, and below consensus of $444.3 million and $0.77, respectively. Gross margins were 33.4% versus our expectations of 34.7%. The company also lowered its 2007 EPS guidance to $2.65-$2.75, from $2.75-$3.00 issued in August."

"The disappointing quarter and guidance mainly reflect slower than expected North American sales as utilities delay project orders while they evaluate AMI options. Also impacting the quarter and outlook were slightly higher operating costs and an increasing revenue contribution from lower-margin Actaris sales….. Book-to-bill ratio in the quarter was 1.05:1 and backlog increased to $668 million, up from $656 million sequentially. The Actaris book-to-bill ratio was slightly less than 1:1 but is expected to return to its historical 1:1 level."

Shrestha does note further risks of revenue lumpiness, customer concentration, dependence upon utilities, and regulations.  "We are lowering our FY07 and FY08 estimates to reflect the timing of AMI orders but are leaving our 2009 estimates and our $115 target unchanged. Our $115 price target reflects a 25x multiple on our 2009 EPS estimate of $4.60. This multiple is in line with its peer group. We believe that, if anything, Itron should trade at a premium to its peers given its leadership position and increasing visibility on movement of several large-scale AMI projects."

Shares of Itron have been hit hard this morning.  ITRI is trading down about 18% around $82.50 and already traded three-times average daily trading volume.  Its 52-week trading range is $46.87 to $112.92.
